TRUMP’S FOREIGN POLICY SPEECH

Yesterday Donald Trump gave a speech on his view on Foreign Policy. The front running candidate for the GOP nomination said that American Foreign Policy essentially begins at home. Trump made the following points:
The United States has to charge foreign governments for aid and will not get involved in affairs not in our best interest.
Trump blasted President Obama for his relationship with Israel. Trump said we should not forget our staunchest and oldest allies in favor of states that are not friendly to us.
Trump called for no more nation building and said the United States under his administration would go into places where we would be welcomed and could win.
Trump tried to link Hillary Clinton to what he called the failed Obama Foreign policy and raised eyebrows with his assertion that he would want to work closely with Muslim who are at risk against violent attacks. Trump also stated that the element of surprise in dealing with adversaries had to be a key component of his policy.
It was measured and was a bit different than the bombast we’re used to. However it was thin on specifics as to how he would rebuild relationships with foreign nations.

CRUZ AND CARLY
The ticket!!! Cruz and Carly!!! (Photo: CNN)
Looking like two people set up on a bad prom date, Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina joined forces as the Cruz express sputters toward the next big primary state Indiana. It was a last ditch attempt to keep the Texas Senator’s campaign relevant after the Trump 5 state sweep Tuesday. Cruz introduced Fiorina with this line: “After a great deal of consideration and prayer, I have come to the conclusion that if I am nominated to be president of the United States that I will run on a ticket with my vice presidential nominee Carly Fiorina".
Yeah what the Cruz campaign needs now are prayers. The Fiorina pick is regarded as a hail mary to get Cruz votes in the upcoming states. But Fiorina is a candidate who brings little to the table. She barely registered when she was running with the other 16. She did well in the debates but never could gain traction. Plus her business affairs are out there for all to see and criticize.
This has been done before. In 1976 Ronald Reagan picked Pennsylvania Senator Richard Schweiker as his running mate in the hopes of securing some Pennsylvania uncommitted delegates. That plan failed when Drew Lewis stood fast with Ford. But unlike Fiorina, Schweiker at least had something to offer.
The announcement got media attention but will have no lasting effect on the race. Plus Cruz is no Reagan and Carly is no Schweiker.

BOEHNER BLASTS CRUZ

With the luxury of retirement John Boehner the former House Speaker can pretty much say what he wants. Check out what Boehner said about Ted Cruz.

Our friend from Florida suggested this be a Ted Cruz campaign song.

LOU IN THE FRONT ROW!!
If you were watching Donald Trump’s Victory speech Tuesday night you saw his family flanking him as he celebrated his wins. But standing a few feet away was 11th District Congressman Lou Barletta. Barletta who stated at the GOP Lincoln Day Breakfast that he was backing no one changed his mind and came out strong for Trump. That was not a surprise because at the breakfast Barletta lauded Trump’s stand on Immigration. The Congressman you can be sure will be a key player at the Convention and beyond for the Trump effort. You don’t get that type of access by a smile and a handshake.

THE LU # 1 FOR TRUMP

Luzerne County gave Donald Trump 77% of the vote on Tuesday in the Pennsylvania primary. That topped the other counties in the Commonwealth. The Trump message resonated in an area that has heard it all before. Telling. We’ll see how it translates in the Fall.

BARLETTA BILL PROTECTING OPIOID-ADDICTED NEWBORNS SAILS THROUGH COMMITTEE
BIPARTISAN BILL ADDRESSES EPIDEMIC: BABY BORN ADDICTED EVERY 25 MINUTES IN U.S.
Congressman Lou Barletta (Photo: Congressman Barletta’s office).
Congressman Lou Barletta successfully guided his bipartisan legislation protecting opioid-addicted newborn babies through the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. The Infant Plan of Safe Care Improvement Act, H.R. 4843, which Barletta authored with Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA),requires that states which receive federal funds for the treatment of opioid-dependent babies comply with federal law and enact certain guidelines for child welfare. The category of opioids includes a variety of pain medications or other drugs, such as heroin. The legislation does not seek to persecute the mothers of the children, so as not to dissuade parents from allowing their newborns to access appropriate care. The bill passed the committee by voice vote and now heads to the floor of the House of Representatives for its consideration.
“Children who are exposed to illegal substances before they’re born are helpless in avoiding the pain and suffering caused by addiction, and so many infants enter this world without even a fighting chance,” Barletta said. “In fact, every 25 minutes in this country, a baby is born having already been exposed to drugs and suffering from opiate withdrawal. These children will pay the price for something they had absolutely no control over C something they were defenseless against. That’s why it’s so important we do everything we can to prevent these heartbreaking situations and ensure all children have the protection and care they need.”
“Our nation is facing a growing opioid epidemic that is destroying communities, families, and lives, and some of the most vulnerable children and families are suffering its worst consequences,” said Education and the Workforce Committee Chairman Kline (R-MN). “This bill is an important part of a much broader effort to address the national opioid crisis. The bill will strengthen protections not only for infants exposed to illegal drugs before birth, but for all children in need of help and care. I’m grateful for the leadership of Representatives Barletta and Clark and for their work advancing this critical bipartisan proposal. We have taken an important step to address a real need, and I look forward to advancing these reforms in the weeks ahead.”
This legislation would:
•Require the department of Health and Human Services to review and confirm states have put in place policies required under the 1974 Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA).
•Strengthen protections for infants born with illegal substance exposure by clarifying the intent of safe care plans.
•Improve accountability related to the care of infants and their families by requiring additional information on the incidents of infants born with illegal substance exposure and their care.
•Provide states with best practices for developing plans to keep infants and their caregivers healthy and safe.
・Encourage the use of information made available through other child welfare laws in verifying CAPTA compliance.
CAPTA was enacted in 1974 to coordinate federal efforts to prevent and respond to child abuse and neglect. The law provides states with resources to improve their child protective services systems. In order to receive funds under CAPTA, states are required to assure the Department of Health and Human Services that they have implemented certain child welfare policies. Such policies include requiring health care providers to notify state child protective services agencies when a child is born with prenatal illegal substance exposure, as well as requiring the development of a “safe care plan” to protect these newborns and keep them and their caregivers healthy. A recent Reuters investigation revealed some states are receiving federal funds without having the necessary policies in place, resulting in shocking and deadly consequences.

“FAMILY MAN” BLAMES BOHMAN, CORBETT AND THE MEDIA

Since I agreed to do Morning commentary on WBRE TV Eyewitness News, it of course requires me to try to get to sleep early for a 3:30AM wake up call. That gave me the opportunity to monitor TV’s PCN, MSNBC and also WILK Radio. So as I’m shaving, I hear the WILK Election Night desk team, Nancy Kman, Steve Corbett and L.A. Tarone interview Frank Farina about his loss to Kevin Haggerty. Haggerty lost in 2014 to Farina after the district was gerrymandered.
I give credit to Farina for being on the show but on close examination, maybe he should have passed. I have no doubt Farina loves his family. At Matt Cartwright’s summer picnic last summer, his children were the best behaved kids I ever saw in public. But last night Farina referenced the love for his family as a reason for relief that he did not have to be in the office anymore. We all have jobs that take us away from our families so I’m thinking he was whistling by the graveyard on that one. Farina blasted Dave Bohman’s report on WNEP where it was revealed the lawmaker bought souvenirs for his kids out of the per diems allowed state reps. Plus he charged the Commonwealth for the free trip to Penn State.
After noted coverage by Bohman, Corbett and others the spending by Farina (and to be fair it wasn’t a lot) was all Haggerty needed to get a foothold on this race. Farina blamed the media for what one can only described as a self inflicted political wound. But his tale is cautionary since in this day of instant media, everyone is watching. Farina’s bad luck is that an Emmy winning award reporter caught it.
Farina’s exit was not pretty and was proof that there is too much money available for State Representatives. Plus the irony here is that a 112th District Representative once more blundered into a WILK staff that gave them the sword to do themselves in. Haggerty did it to himself in 2014, Farina this year.
You cannot blame the Media when all they did was ask the questions. Haggerty is back, Farina says he will move on to the private sector. We wish him well but I’m sure he knows he isn’t going to get a better gig than the one he lost on Tuesday night.

TRUMP COMES TO WILKES BARRE

More than 15,000 people showed up for a Donald Trump rally at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Trump touched on The Wall, the loss of jobs because of poor trade practices and took joy in attacking both Ted Cruz and John Kasich. Here are a few photos from Facebook Friends.

WBRE TV's Pa. Live's Dave Kuharchik took this photo of Trump at the event.

IF YOU EVER WONDERED..........

WHO THOSE PEOPLE WITH THE SIGNS ARE?

Yep you see the candidate at the podium giving the talking points. And in the background you see supporters holding up signs, nodding in agreement and just providing the perfect backdrop for the prospective office seeker. They usually are cherry picked by campaign staff and represent a cross section of supporters the candidate hopes to represent.
While watching WBRE today I spied Tiffany Cloud behind Texas Senator Ted Cruz. Now Cloud is no Janey Come Lately to the Cruz bid. In the aftermath of the 2012 elections recap, after Mitt Romney lost talk turned to 2016 on the WYLN TV 35 panel if you could believe that. When it was Tiffany's turn on she emphatically said that Ted Cruz would be an excellent candidate. She believed then and believes now. Here's the photo.Tiffany is on the left.

HILLARY STORMS THE LAC

Clinton at Dunmore High. (Photo: Diana Stevens, Scranton Times Tribune).
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stopped by the borough of Dunmore Friday night for a rally that got her crowd in a frenzy when she sounded off on populist themes. She went after both Ted Cruz and Donald Trump and said what I have been saying for so long. Republicans have been shooting their mouths off about the slow Obama recovery. Really?
Consecutive job growth since 2009.
Obstruction of programs to promote job growth by a GOP controlled Congress.
Clinton spoke about the trickle down effect that led to the Great Recession that the Democrats had to clean up.
Clinton proclaimed “We wouldn’t have needed a recovery if they hadn’t wrecked the economy in the first place.” That’s why I voted for Hillary Clinton already. There’s two big loudmouths in this race. One is saying there are problems but has done nothing to solve them. And the other guy says he wants to make America great again. That guy I’d love to send to a Survivor type show in Bolivia and see how great he thinks things are there.

BY THE WAY
 THAT GUY….

SCRANTON’S JOE ALBERT ON CNN
Republican Joe Albert. (Albert campaign website)
Former 22nd State Senatorial candidate Joe Albert was on CNN’s Smerconish Show this Saturday giving his opinion on a focus group the talk show host conducted. His opinions were solid and very enlightening. Of course he was next to two dumbasses, a husband and wife team that were frankly backs up my theory that really stupid people shouldn’t vote. The wife, when asked by Michael Smerconish who she believes was stopping her from saying “Merry Christmas” replied, “The government”. She should live in a country that actually does that. The husband said he was tired of apologizing because he went to a Christian Church. That I didn’t understand but both were Trump supporters and indicative of why he is getting away with stuff he says.
But our Joe Albert at least tried to save the day with some comments that did Scranton proud.

PAT SOLANO HONORED BY PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY
Pa. Society Honoree Patrick Solano. (Photo: Citizen's Voice)
This afternoon Hughestown resident, World War II veteran, and political powerhouse Pat Solano was honored by The Pennsylvania Society. Solano was awarded The Distinguished Citizen of the Commonwealth Medal.
Before a jam packed crowd of 400 movers and shakers, neighbors, relatives and friends, Solano accepted the award in his typical humble but classy manner.
Governors Corbett, Ridge and Schweiker were on the scene as well as Senators Casey and Toomey. Plus there were tons of local politicos and statewide officials honoring him. Past President of the Society A.J. Sordoni was there along with other officials for the organization’s spring meeting.
Solano has served in administrations in Harrisburg dating back to the Constitutional Convention in 1967.
He was executive director for the General State Authority, which after the 1968 constitutional convention ended became the Department of General Services. Solano was Deputy Secretary of the Department of Environmental Resources, and served as senior counselor to Governors Tom Ridge and Mark Schweiker.
EDITORS NOTE: Many thanks to Michael Clark President of Surmont, Washington, D.C. and former aide to Congressman Dan Flood for the invitation to sit at his table. Unfortunately a work commitment kept me from getting there.

BARLETTA: WANT TO WORK AT THE IRS? PAY YOUR TAXES!
BACKS BILL TO SUSPEND IRS HIRING UNTIL DELINQUENCIES ELIMINATED
“IT’S LIKE HAVING LANCE ARMSTRONG LEAD A TASK FORCE ON FAIR COMPETITION IN BICYCLE RACING.”
Congressman Lou Barletta and your blog editor circa 2008. (Photo: LuLac archives)
Congressman Lou Barletta backed legislation that prevents the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from hiring any new employees until the Treasury Secretary certifies to Congress that no existing employees are carrying significant delinquent tax debt. Under current federal law, the IRS Commissioner is required to fire employees for failing to file federal tax returns or willfully understating their tax delinquency, unless failure to pay is due to a reasonable cause. A 2015 Inspector General’s report, however, revealed that only 39 percent of the 1,580 employees with tax delinquencies were terminated. The bill, H.R. 1206, the No Hires for the Delinquent IRS Act, passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 254-to-170 and now heads to the Senate for its consideration.
“Is it any wonder that Americans have lost faith in their government?” Barletta said. “More than half of IRS employees who owe significant back taxes are still working at the very agency that collects taxes. It’s like having Lance Armstrong lead a task force on fair competition in bicycle racing.”
The legislation specifically prohibits the IRS from extending an offer of employment to any individual until the Secretary of the Treasury submits written certification to Congress that the agency does not employ anyone with serious tax delinquencies. If the Secretary cannot make such a certification, he or she must submit a report explaining why, outline the remedial actions necessary to make such a certification, and indicate the time needed to complete the actions. The bill applied to all offers of employment after December 31, 2016.
“Tax Day was earlier this week, marking that painful day when millions of Americans had to sit down and write a check to the IRS,” Barletta said. “It is outrageous that the people who receive and process those checks may not have paid their own taxes. This is an offensive situation that has to be fixed.”

Last night we were proud to be included on the panel for the GOP 17th District Congressional debate between Matt Connolly and Glenn Geissinger. The two squared off in a spirited but gentlemanly meeting at the WYLN Studios.
After the debate, Tiffany Cloud, moderator Gary Perna and your blog editor agreed that the two men were two strong candidates. Both had Conservative bonafides and their differences were not earth shattering. My take on it was that it is a shame that one of them will not win because both are two candidates the GOP could certainly use in a race against Cartwright.
As you know, the 17th was gerrymandered for Tim Holden who was defeated by Matt Cartwright in 2012. The district includes both population powerhouses and Democratic strongholds, the Lu and the Lac or Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties.
Here is the debate recap from Sam Galski.

WYOMING

Cruz (R)

CRUZ TAKES WYOMING

GOP presidential hopeful Ted Cruz won all 14 delegates at stake on Saturday in Wyoming, beating Donald Trump, who essentially made little effort. Actually he didn’t bother to show up. The win, while small narrowed the gap in the race for the party's nomination.
Cruz is trying to prevent Trump from obtaining the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the Republican nomination at the July convention in Cleveland. By continuing to rack up small wins, Cruz is gaining ground on the bombastic front runner.
But this win might be blunted by a very strong showing from Trump in Tuesday's New York primary.

SERIOUSLY????
Remember their names and faces, Kimberly and Jarrod Tutko Sr., murderers of Jarrod Tutko, Jr. (Photo: People.com)
Remember that Pennsylvania couple who plead guilty to third-degree murder for the death of their 9-year-old son? They recent lost a suit against Pennsylvania prison authorities because they claim they were being mistreated in jail.
Their son, (Jesus why in the world do asswipes like this produce so easily??) Jarrod Tutko Jr. weighed less than 17 lbs. at the time of his death. An autopsy concluded that he died of malnutrition and neglect. My dog who has cancer weighs more than that!
The 9 year old boy's corpse decomposed for nearly a week inside the couple's Harrisburg home before the cops were called. Now these people have the nerve to sue the state for their mistreatment?
I really don’t need to know their sad stories or how many “problems” they had. The bottom line is they were selfish, oafish pigs who both should have been fixed before they had their “son”. If they couldn’t deal with a disabled child they should have given it up. But for Christ sakes, how the hell easy is it to feed someone? Even animals find a way to feed their young.
The sad part is these people will get out of jail someday.
Let us hope and pray that providence will show them the same mercy they showed for their “child”.

BARLETTA SEEKS SUPPORT FOR BILL PROTECTING OPIOID-ADDICTED NEWBORNS
BIPARTISAN BILL ADDRESSES EPIDEMIC: BABY BORN ADDICTED EVERY 19 MINUTES IN U.S.

Congressman Lou Barletta. (LuLac archives).
Congressman Lou Barletta began seeking further support from his colleagues in the House of Representatives for his bipartisan legislation that protects newborn babies who are born addicted to opioids, which include a variety of pain medications or other drugs, such as heroin. Along with Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA), Barletta has circulated what is known as a “Dear Colleague” letter soliciting co-sponsors to add to the six who have already signed on. The legislation, H.R. 4843, the Improving Safe Care for the Prevention of Infant Abuse and Neglect Act, requires that states which receive federal funds for the treatment of opioid-dependent babies comply with federal law and enact certain guidelines for child welfare. The legislation does not seek to persecute the mothers of the children, so as not to dissuade parents from allowing their newborns to access appropriate care.
“In the time it takes to cast your first vote today, at least one American baby will be born exposed to opioids,” the letter to lawmakers begins, referring to the startling statistic that a baby is born addicted to opioids every nineteen minutes in the United States.
•Encourage the use of information made available through other child welfare laws in verifying CAPTA compliance.
“We see the damage of substance abuse across all segments of our society, but perhaps the most tragic cases involve newborns who enter the world defenseless against the addictions they were born with,” Barletta said. “We must do everything we can to safeguard the most vulnerable among us and ensure they will be well protected and cared for.”
In addition to Barletta and Clark, the lead Democrat on the bill, original co-sponsors include Rep. John Kline (R-MN), Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO), Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA), and Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI).

TRUMP’S FLAWED LOGIC
Trump penned in and not digging it. (Photo: fifthestate.com)
The loudmouth running for President, Donald Trump has turned into a whining little cry baby. The fact is no voter is being disenfranchised. Each state sets up their own primaries or caucuses. We in Pennsylvania have been fretting for years that our late primary would never be relevant. But the state due to costs as well as what the parties decided did not change the date. That decision was made by the State Legislature who in turn is elected by the people.
Plus Trump is bitching about Colorado where he didn't show up and now Wyoming where he didn't show up. Hey buddy, you have to work for it.
Campaigns are illustrative of how someone will lead. It is evident to me that Donald Trump is just plain lazy in terms of running this race. He has not learned the issues and when gets confronted, he acts like an irrational child who needs to get a time out.
All caucuses are open to registered voters. They have a chance to vote. No one is or was being disenfranchised. You will hear and see me say this tomorrow on WBRE TV Eyewitness Newsmakers tomorrow at 11AM, “Donald Trump brought a waffle ball bat to the delegate race while Ted Cruz brought a Louisville slugger!” It’s as simple as all that. The system is rigged only in Donald Trump’s mind.

PAT TOOMEY: I WANT A REFUND

Dear Senator Toomey:
As an elected official I expect you to earn your pay. Just like the rest of us.
When you refuse to do your job and not vote or work on a Supreme Court nominee, you are not working.
I want a refund because you are a slacker.

My best,
Dave

SANDERS CLINTON DEBATE
Bernie and Hillary. (AOL.COM)
So as I tune into the debate with Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders tonight, I am struck by a few things.
Hillary doesn't take any crap from anyone.
Bernie is going after the banks, banks, banks. Wants to break them up. Does he not realize that Democrats work in banks, have retirement accounts in them and just saying that scares the bejesus out of the markets? And after he breaks up the banks, what happens to our money? He's not saying.
What is incredible is that Sanders drew 27,000 people in New York yesterday. Yu can't beat that with a stick.
I also wonder why Hillary Clinton just doesn't release those speeches. I don't care if she got a check for giving a speech. It hasn't influenced her votes.
I also am not a fan of the Roman Coliseum atmosphere of this debate with the various fans of the two whooping it up. This sure isn't Kennedy/Nixon.
Still it is something to chew over as we get closer to New York.

SESTAK ENDORSED BY THE POST GAZETTE
U.S. Senate candidate Joe Sestak. (Photo: Sestak campaign).
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has joined The Philadelphia Inquirer in endorsing Joe Sestak, saying “the Democrats’ best bet for the U.S. Senate is Joe Sestak” because of “his independence, his call for accountability and his promise to restore integrity in government.” This is significant – not only because the biggest papers in the two biggest cities in PA both back Joe, but because of why they're supporting him: Joe will be accountable to people above party.

NOTE: A voter may appear in person at the Bureau of Elections any time prior to the deadline to make application for a civilian absentee ballot. Voters may also hand deliver applications on behalf of other voters in the same way they may deliver an application to register to vote. However, the ballot itself may only be delivered to the voter himself or herself. In other words, if you are the applicant, you will receive only your ballot and not that of anyone else.
APRIL 22, 2016
All voted absentee ballots; except those received from military and overseas electors, and emergency absentee electors, as defined by law, must be received by the county board of elections by 5:00 PM on this day to be counted.
NOTE: A voter may appear in person at the Bureau of Elections any time prior to the deadline to deposit their own voted ballot into a ballot box for such purpose. On the day of the deadline, voters also have the option of placing the proper postage upon the voted absentee ballot and giving it to the postal worker at the public counter of the main branch of the post office on South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. The postal worker will hand cancel the postage and hold it for a representative of the Bureau of Elections who will collect those voted absentee ballots for processing at 4:45 PM.

BARLETTA GUIDES PASSAGE OF BILLS HONORING POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS
RESOLUTIONS RESERVE CAPITOL GROUNDS FOR PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL, FIREFIGHTERS FLAG PRESENTATION
Rep. Barletta discusses his bill to protect volunteer firefighters from the unintended consequences of Obamacare at the Nanticoke Fire Department last year.
Congressman Lou Barletta, PA-11, has guided House of Representatives passage of two resolutions authorizing the use of U.S. Capitol grounds to honor fallen peace officers and firefighters. In his role as Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management, Barletta shepherded the bills on the floor of the House Tuesday evening.
Peace Officers
House Continuing Resolution 117, authored by Barletta, authorizes the use of U.S. Capitol Grounds for the 35thAnnual National Peace Officers Memorial Service and the National Honor Guard and Pipe Band Exhibition. The memorial service, sponsored by the Grand Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police and its auxiliary, will take place on Sunday, May 15, 2016. It will mark the beginning of “Police Week,” which is an annual event drawing as many as 40,000 law enforcement officers, their friends, and family to the nation’s capital. Five police officers from Pennsylvania lost their lives in 2015. H. Con. Res. 117 passed the House by unanimous consent.
“The sacrifices of our peace officers, and the sacrifices of their families, should not be forgotten,” Barletta said. “These officers risk their lives every day to protect our communities and their bravery and selfless services shall not be overlooked by a grateful nation.”
Barletta co-sponsored the Eric Williams Correctional Officer Protection Act, now a new law that supplies oleoresin capsicum spray, commonly known as pepper spray, to federal prison officers or employees who may respond to emergency situations with inmates. The legislation was named for Nanticoke native Eric Williams, an officer at the U.S. Prison at Canaan who was killed by an inmate in 2013.
Officer Williams was unarmed when he was attacked, allegedly by convicted gang assassin Jessie Con-ui, a member of the violent New Mexican Mafia gang, who already was serving an 11-year sentence at the time. Con-ui is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree murder of a U.S. corrections officer, and possessing contraband in prison. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Firefighters
House Continuing Resolution 120, authored by Rep. Peter King, NY-2, authorizes the use of the U.S. Capitol grounds for the 3rd Annual Fallen Firefighters Congressional Flag Presentation Ceremony. H. Con. Res. 120 passed the House by unanimous consent.
“Our firefighters stand ready to respond at a moment’s notice to protect our property, our homes, and our lives, no matter the time of day, at great risk to themselves,” Barletta said. “These men and women are local heroes, and it is right that we take the time to honor those who have given their lives in the service of others.”
Barletta has been a longtime supporter of the Assistance for Firefighter Grants program, having made repeated requests to House Appropriations Committee leaders for continued support and funding. He has promoted the support of benefits for first responders, particularly those who directly suffered the effects of September 11, 2001. In addition, Barletta successfully led the fight to protect volunteer fire and emergency companies from the ravages of Obamacare, which could have caused many stations to close their doors because of financial burdens associated with the employer mandate provision. Under pressure from Barletta, the Internal Revenue Service changed its rule governing the employer mandate and specifically exempted firefighters from Obamacare, though Barletta continues to pursue legislation to formalize it in federal law. When embarking on one of his Main Street Tours of the 11th District, Barletta usually begins his visit with a stop at the local fire house. In 2014, the National Volunteer Fire Council named Barletta their Legislator of the Year.

13 QUESTIONS

Our "13 Questions" logo

1. What is the LuLac Media schedule?

Okay here we go.
WYLN TV 35 debate moderation on April 18th at 7pm channel 7. 17rh district GOP candidates Matt Connolly and Glenn Geissinger.
WBRE News makers April 17th and 24th 11am on WBRE, 1130am on WYOU. Then we’ll be on the Cumulus group stations with Brian Hughes on his Sunday Magazine program. The times are; , Sunday morning at 5am on NASH-FM, 93.7, 5:30am on 97BHT, 6am on 97.9X & Sports Radio 590, WARM & 6:25am on Magic 93.
We’re also going to be on WILK with Webster and Nancy on Election Day and will be on WBRE TV’s Morning News at 5AM the day after election.

2. If Trump and Cruz falter and the fact that many GOP people say the nomination must be from someone already in the race.....all that stated, what in your opinion would be the best ticket for the GOP?

I think the best ticket would be Kasich and Rubio. The Trump people will boycott if Cruz is picked, the Cruz people will bolt if Trump gets it. So either way the GOP loses votes. But they are votes of people who are not going to vote for anyone but their own. They cancel each other out. So they need to appeal to a more moderate base. I can't see the Trump and Cruz people going to Bernie or Hillary, do you?

3. How about that Professor? Will we ever crack that code?

Nope we just enjoy his vaunted presence whenever we can get it.

4. Oranges or apples?

A tie. A good fresh apple with a crunch is a wonderful snack and a juicy flavorful orange is incredible. Love them both.

5. Heard you with Tarone a few weeks back, you guys weren't screaming at each other. How come?

We made the decision to calm it down so we could address the callers.

6. As a Roman Catholic Antoine Scalia attended a Latin Mass. Have ever been to one, can you describe it and which, if yes to the first two questions which would you prefer?

Loved the pageantry of the Latin Mass. I remember it as a boy. The ceremony drew me to the church.
When they changed the Mass in the mid 60s it was exciting. English, the altar facing the people. Masses are now longer affairs than some might like. I actually would like to see the Latin Mass once in a while.

7. I noticed that in this election cycle you are not as active in supporting guys like Cartwright and even Hillary financially. Any reason why?

Been there done that. Supported people financially as an experiment for maybe a future book but there was no real return on the investment other than getting in some small way the guys elected I wanted in office.

8. Did you see the Senate debate on TV and what did you think of the three candidates?

Yes and I think it was pretty informative. My guy is Sestak, I thought he did very well. I was impressed with Jon Fetterman and think he has a future statewide.

9. What do you think about raising the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour?

While I support a raise in the minimum wage, 15 bucks an hour is just plain nuts! Small and mid size businesses need to make a profit and they aren't going to do it with that wage. There are just some jobs that aren't worth that.
Health care jobs like nursing home aides and medical people need more than 8 bucks an hour.
I think a fair increase would be 9.50 for new employees and 11.50 and then beyond according to merit and experience.

10. Carly Simon or Carole King?

Oh wow. Another apples and oranges question. I better call James Taylor and get advice.

11. Is credit card debt driving you batty?

No. One card, that's it. Love my AMEX. You have to stop listening to those commercials.

12. Jerry Cookus, what do you make of that?

I was shocked but the courts will make the final determination on the former Police and Security official. In his statement, unless I’m missing something, I didn’t hear once any concern for the child from him in this accusation.
Plus this is related to a certain extent. The guy has a Pension from the police, he needs to work at a school? This double dipping stuff is a disgrace. I’m counting on a guy like Aaron Kaufer to introduce a bill to get rid of crap like this.

13. Thoughts on the WB Area School board firing those beer doting teachers?

Pleasantly surprised. They did the right thing, I was not optimistic given the connections of the fermented five. But the culture of alcohol starts in college and when graduates are lucky enough to get a plum job they treat it like it's one big frat party. Those salaries do not fall off trees in this area. I'm sure the people that slid them in are livid over their stupidity.
Keep an eye on the state, city and county level and see if any of these people rebound there. Here's the link from the CV so you can keep track of them. http://citizensvoice.com/news/board-terminates-5-gar-teachers-1.2029626
