The LuLac Edition #3060, October 31st, 20015

STEF AND VITO SQUARE OFF
This was the scene Thursday night as Vito Deluca and DA Stefanie Salavantis debated the issues on the campus of Wyoming Seminary. ((Photo: Times Leader).
The two candidates for District Attorney in Luzeerne County confronted each other at a late debate Thursday night in Kingston. Both candidates made their points from separate tables partitioned by a representative from The League of Women Voters. I guess you could call this a “he said, she said” debate.
Challenger Vito DeLuca said that Salavantis was not as efficient in running her office as she claimed. He noted that protecting the public was sometimes expensive and would not pander to voters saying he would save money.
Salavantis meanwhile noted her office saved the taxpayers over $200,000 and that her forays into the community helped educate crime watch groups as well as non profits about preventing fraud.
DeLuca criticized the number of arrests county detectives make while Salavantis said that she wanted to expand its drug task force by taking control of it and increasing revenues.
DeLuca also said the $250,000 Salavantis said she saved for taxpayers could have been spent on solving 13 unsolved murders in her time in office. He did not say how he would spend that money to get the crimes solved.
The League opened the question to audience members and the candidates had to answer questions about living in drug houses and on legalzatrion of pot, two things their office can’t control.
For a debate that took so long to get to between the two candidates, it was interesting to see that both felt they needed more time to explain their positions. It was a good effort, both candidates didn’t seem to hurt each other and the attendees who supported each proclaimed their side won.

AND IN THE LAC….
Here come the bullets

County Commissioner candidates Laureen Cummings, Bill Jones and Charlie Spano. (Photo: TimesTribune.com).
Rumor has it that in the Lackawanna County race for Commissioner on the GOP side, the bullets are coming out. The bullet vote that is. My sources tell me that Bill Jones who has been paired with Laureen Cummings is urging his people to vote only for him. It is no wonder he is doing that since Pat “The Statesman” O’Malley did the same thing to Jones in ’11 when O’Malley was a member of the GOP.
Cummings people are surely going to make the effort to give her a single vote since she is well known and can be seen as being a very tough Minority Commissioner. As a matter of fact if Cummings or Charlie Spano who is running a Write In gets to be the Minority Commissioner it will be the Democrats worse nightmare. Jones in the meantime seems to be humming to the lyrics of “Once Bitten, Twice Shy”.

Had every intention of voting for Laureen until yesterday.
Sorry, I can't vote for a republican that is being supported by Steve Corbett.
His endorsement is a dance with the devil. He agrees with nothing she stands for, but yet, he is supporting her.
I hope is support is worth it to her, she lost my, and my entire family's votes. About 18 votes that were going he way, now going to Jones, and Jones only.

Why doesn't someone just get rid of those useless county detectives that they are paying thru the nose for.

IN RESPONSE

Now with all due respect, your logic is really silly.
I get Corbett's point and I agree with it 100%. Personally I like Laureen Cummings as I do many local Republicans. I violently disagree with their national politics. Cummings stances on all things national are totally anathema to me. If she were running for Congress or the Senate like she did in 2012, there is no way I would support her.
But as a Minority Commissioner against a turn coat opportunists and a well seasoned party operative, you can't get better than her from the GOP.
Charlie Spano would be great too but he'd be a tad more polite than Cummings.
Just because a person has national and international views that don't jive with the local issues doesn't disqualify them to shake up the local offices.
No one and I mean no one is going to be consulting Cummings on Social Security or Iraq.
And this 18 vote thing, you mean your family can't think for themselves? Are you the guru that says, "vote this way". I'd rather them stay home if they can't think about who they want.
This may be more of an attack on Corbett and his style then who could be the best Minority Commissioner in the Lac.
But don't throw the baby out with the bath water just because a guy who has very liberal positions nationally can't have Conservative positions locally.
You should see some of the local GOPers I've voted for in the past. I'd never let them near a federal or state office but to blow up the entrenched power structure here....I'd give them a vote in a NY minute if they were reasonable.

So you'd rather not vote for Cummings an experienced advocate for cutting taxes and a watchdog not afraid to speak her mind and vote for Jones who attacked a man for going into debt when his two daughters had cancer. Then he ignored the fact that Mr. Spano paid everything back. He also brought up a divorce too.
You'd rather go with that guy than Cummings because Steve Corbett backed Cummings.
By your logic, Corbett is not the devil but God. He has that much power.
See, there is truth to the fact that a guy with a beard walking the earth in the Hill Section has that much power.
Yikes.

I agree with the previous poster.
Anyone aligned with Steve Corbett must have some type of flaw.
We had a discussion among family and friends last night.
Laureen has lost another bloc of voters from the Dunmore and Scranton area.
Whether Corbett is God or Satan is not the relevant point for us; it is that she has embraced his endorsement.
After watching him turn on others, mostly women, i.e. Liz Randol, Tara Toohill, what will he do with Laureen? To us, it is about her, and lack of good judgement, by embracing him, that we have decided to not vote for her, and go with Jones.

It terrifies me that you are allowed to vote in an election.

We just had our pre-election Sunday coffee clatch, and your blog was the topic of conversation.
We agree with the previous two posters. Laureen has betrayed all republicans who Corbett has insulted, time and time again. Corbett's derogatory comments were not about ideology, they were and are personal and venomous attacks. He forgets he is talking about people.
So, the six of us have to decided to bullet vote for Jones as well, and we are spreading the word. If Cummings would prefer an endorsement from Corbett than the conservative voters she claims to represent, so be it.
Our goal is to get the word out and try and get 500 plus voters to bullet vote for Jones too.
Our slogan, a vote for Cummings is a proxy vote for Steve Corbett.
Laureen made her choice to allow herself to be used by Corbett, we are making our choice to attempt to ensure she is not elected.

a few years ago I heard Yonki speak at some type of blog forum. And he said that if the world was going to end, you want to be here in nepa.
judging by your comments he is right. While the GOP candidates for President are moving away from media personalities and not making them the center of the political world....you guys, excuse me, youse guys are giving Corbett and for that matter Yonk way too much credit in terms of picking a candidate or even promoting one by talking or writing about them.
you're lagging behind some but then let's remember where we are......

Totally disagree with your predictions for Luzerne County Council. Voters tired of the same old candidates. And, you seem to ignore the vote for the only female candidate. Walsh-Waitkus appears to be extremely competent.

I agree. She is great but name recognition is very tough to beat in this area. She came close the last time and I wish her well.
Predictions have variables and the voting public and need for a another qualified woman will tell the tale.
