THE CASEY LEGACY

The legacy of Scranton resident Robert P. Casey, Senior still lives on. I became familiar with Mr. Casey when he first ran for Governor in the primary in 1966. He was under 40. His charisma and youth convinced me he'd win big that year. He didn't. As a matter of fact, he needed three more tries to be Governor. During that time, he espoused his Hubert Humphrey philosophy of government of taking care of those with less. Mr. Casey also made sure his home turf recieved its share of state rewards, recognizing the key location of this area in the state.
Seven years after his death, the good works still continue.
When former Gov. Bob Casey Sr. set out to accomplish something, his friends and family said, he did so with belief in his hopes and dreams. Nearly 50 of the late governor’s friends and relatives gathered Sunday at the former Masonic Temple nearly seven years after his death to celebrate one of his dreams come true: the building’s renaissance as the Scranton Cultural Center.
The governor’s son, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr., and daughter, Margi Casey McGrath, attended, along with his grandchildren. A large portrait was the centerpiece of the library, directly above the fireplace. The portrait hung for several years in the Lackawanna County Visitors’ Bureau and at the County Historical Society. During his tenure from 1987 to 1995, one of the ways Gov. Casey promoted economic development was through his support of arts and cultural centers. Through the Pennsylvania redevelopment assistance grant program, the Casey administration in the early 1990s dedicated $8 million to the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple.

MUSIC TO MY EARS

Even though it's talk radio, the tones of Nancy Kman's voice today on WILK was music to my ears. And she was in fine form getting Mr. Kevin Lynn's hackles up about of all things Harry Potter. We love to hear ya, but don't overdue it. We need you around long term.

AND THE BEAT GOES ON

It just keeps getting more problematic for Lackawanna County Commissioner Bob Cordaro. Word is there will be a ballot challenge for the general election trying to remove him from the GOP line, Luzerne County has acquired some gonads by filing suit over the Yankees Triple A team ownership issue and his partner A.J. Munchak and by extension his administration is getting slammed on a prison issue. Some Mid Valley pols are telling me it may be "all for one and none for all" if the problems continue for the Cordaro/Munchak team.

Current Majority rode in on a Jail Scandal- May ride out on one… Maybe there is a God! Munchak opened his mouth without Bob scripting what he said re the jail debacle.

Cordaro Munchak Parody Concept

Laurel and Hardy with the roles physically reversed. A juxtaposition of personalities. Munchak physically Hardy, but with the personality of Laurel. Cordaro more Laurel like in appearance, but as the Hardy or dominant character. They think with one brain and that brain was on vacation when Munchak/Hardy/Laurel took to the airwaves, in a role always filled by Bob/Stan/ Oliver. Usually Munchaks remarks are prepared or at least approved by Bob. Munchak's attitude threw gasoline on the fire.
So she had a baby in a cell. So what? So nobody at the jail had a cell phone and they couldn’t connect with the 19 million 911 Center because the jail phones were brilliantly blocked! (What if there was a riot?)
“Look what you did while I was out of town, Stanley. This is a fine mess you’ve gotten us into.”
There is without a doubt a coverup in the works in a story that just aint comin together here. As they say down South, “That dog wont hunt!” And what of Munchak's old buddy the doctor with the 143,000 dollar a month contract and a $5 fee to get medical attention? This fire could spread and Washo is right to ask for an independent investigation. Irony of the highest order could be in the works. And once again to all local pundits, I believe it is a County Jail, a State Prison and a Federal Penitentiary.
This is a “Jail” Scandal not a Prison Scandal!

Sorry Pete...close.

The nomenclature goes like this.

Jails are locally-operated correctional facilities that confine persons before or after adjudication. Inmates sentenced to jail usually have a sentence of 3 years or less. This can vary by state.

Jails also incarcerate persons in a variety of other categories, such as persons being held pending arraignment, trial, conviction, or sentencing; those who have been returned to custody following violation of the terms of their release on probation or parole; and persons being transferred to the custody of other criminal justice/correctional authorities.

Prisons are operated by either a state or the federal government, and they confine only those individuals who have been sentenced to 1 year or more of incarceration.

Penitentiary is used to denote a high security prison. Lewisburg has a Federal prison. Canaan has a Federal penitentiary.

Whoa, whoa, wait, hold on here. Who in hell lays down these definitions of places of incarceration?

1) I grew up in the shadow of The Lackawanna County PRISON. It's been that for at least 50 years.

2) If penitentiary solely applies to maximum security, then Lewisburg is a penitentiary. In fact, IT IS. The feds officially consider it such. Lewisburg is about as hard-time as you can get.

As to Bobby-Boy; he's got serious problems. AJ has taken every opportunity to distance himself from him since the start. At best, he goes down; at worst, he makes headlines.
