MAYBE I’M AMAZED
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..at how flawless the Opening Program was at the Sochi Olympics, the opening glitch notwithstanding. One of the things that struck me was the segment where the Russians were courting, marrying, then having babies signified by the baby strollers. The way this country is going, you have the baby first, maybe get married and once in a while date.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED………that the more I hear and see about the Kids For Cash scandal I have to wonder why Michael Conahan is allowed to get less heat than Ciavarella. I know that Ciavarella was the face of the Justice system to those kids but I can’t help but think that Conahan was the master puppeteer who saw in Ciavarella a guy who really believed what he was doing. That was confirmed by one of the scandal’s victims. She said in n interview that Ciavarella really believed what he was doing. And Conahan gets a lighter sentence and gets to sit in a lower security prison.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..that people barely remember the Ed Sullivan Show’s presentation of “Oliver” the same night as the Beatles’ appearance. But the late Davy Jones, he of the Monkees fame was on that show too. ’
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..that there are still politicos that think Governor Tom Corbett is not going to win re-election. The Guv is not the most lovable guy in the world. He would out dour the dour the portrayal of Eliot Ness played by Robert Stack. But he has two things going for him, the first is he has cut the Pennsylvania budget. You may not like what he cut but people understand that things need to be cut. People have done so in their household budgets. Second, love him or hate him, he is the GOP candidate. The Dems have a free for all right now and Corbett has the luxury to hammer what he did. His Achilles Heel still might be gas drilling but Pennsylvanians are reluctant to get rid of incumbents. Also the Governor is constantly being attacked for cutting Education but look at this chart provided by Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center which was up on Pa. Politics. Look at the graph and see were Corbett stands on Education funding.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……that Speaker of the House John Boehner has said that now he is opposed to Immigration Reform because he can’t trust the President. What the hell does he think, the President is going to turn us into the United States of Mexico and gerrymander his district to Tijuana? Boehner is like a duck in a shooting gallery, never staying in one place on an issue. That's why this Democratic administration could never deal with any part of this maddening GOP Majority in House very much.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED….that when the Democrats and Republicans did compromise on the Farm Bill, not one member of the GOP came to the bill signing in Michigan. Bad, bad form. So maybe the Democrats should take total credit for getting that thing passed.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…….that cities like Wilkes Barre have no clue as to how to handle small alleys and streets when a snow storm comes. I know the big trucks and plows can’t get down the alleys. But maybe it might be a good idea to outsource with contractors who have little trucks with little plows to get down places like Pershing Street, Almond Lane or Laufer Lane. My in laws street, McLean once was totally ignored and residents had to shovel themselves out. They moved.
The frustrating part about this weather for taxpaying residents of Wilkes Barre not living in the spacious confines of Barney Farms is that they get no answer when they call City Hall.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…….at the big deal being made over the fact that Judge Jennifer Rogers tried out to sing the National Anthem at the Railriders Park in 2014. Hey, at least she tried out, in the old days in LuLac land someone might have put the arm on a Stadium employee and the Judge would be singing without an audition. She played by the rules. By the way, Rogers was involved in Theatre before becoming a Judge. And if selected, she’ll do herself and the country proud.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……that the Hugo Selinkski trial is off again once more. The Judge threw Attorney Sherry Centini off the case and now poor Hugo has to find himself another Attorney. Maybe the Olympic Committee can contact Mr. Putin of Russia and get Hugo an old KGB barrister looking to enjoy the high life of Wilkes Barre. No Attorney in the states in their right mind would touch this case which is what the wily Hugo is counting on.

Somebody convince me we have an immigration problem.
As I see it we are failing to follow/enforce our immigration laws. What's different from the Ellis Island years?
How do we stack up to other countries?
Do we really need more low wage workers when our economy can not support the number we already have? If we have chosen to provide healthcare for our current low wage workers its a sign we will need to provide those services for the new low age workers. Who pays for that and can we afford it?

I saw Kids for Cash over the w/e and I agree with you, Conhan comes out as the guy behind the entire deal, including the signing of the secret deal w/Powell.
I think Conhan saw Ciavarella as the perfect opportunity, he could guarantee filling the juvenile center without really having to do anything except making sure that Ciavarella followed him as president judge so he could stay in juvenile court.
Any money to Ciavarella can be likened to paying a bounty to Dick Butkus for taking out a quarterback... it was a safe assumption that was what was going to happen money or no money.

I must state that this winter weather is certainly taking a toll. Frigid temps, consistent snowfalls, and on and on. And yet, there are actually people who still believe in global warming. Regardless, as the Lord hath deemed it, Spring will soon be upon us and hopefully, I will be available for more classroom time (stop your frowning).
The work of this classroom moves forward…….
Students, Mr. Yonki has once again dredged up a horrific memory for me, not involving 1974 but 1964. As an avid viewer of the Ed Sullivan program, I remember well the night that the four ingrates from Liverpool (Great Britain’s equivalent of Detroit) graced my television screen to screech out noise akin to nails scratching across a chalkboard. I recall equally telling my wife that these “boys” were dangerous and had the potential to ruin our nation. You must understand what life was like before this night. Classrooms were full of young men with suits/ties/crew cuts. All neatly groomed. Young ladies wore knee length skirts and hair becoming of a ‘nice girl’. Youngsters displayed manners. Youngsters knew a four letter word called SOAP. And did not use the vulgar four letter words. Most important, youngsters did not use drugs. The Beatles caused our young generation to take a 180 degree turn into a degenerative existence. Respect for institutions dissipated. Instead of being proud of receiving a draft notice, young men fled the nation for Canada, or feigned homosexuality to avoid serving the country that was so good to them.
All this because of four talent lacking degenerates from one of the worst slums of Great Britain. And we stop today to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this tragedy????? Give me your answer!!!!!!!
However, to be fair to Mr. Yonki, I do recall the production of Oliver that evening. Young Mr. Jones was stellar as the Artful Dodger. Funny, it seems that no matter how I try, I cannot avoid having to speak of Davy Jones from time to time over the past several years. Georgia Brown and the younger kids also delivered stellar performances. Mr. Sullivan had provided us over the years with many great Broadway performances by the original casts. For me, the Oliver performance was the great attraction of that program on that evening. Unfortunately, many of the disrespectful hooligans/harlots in the audience would not quiet down in order for the adults to enjoy the production. They just needed their fix of the Beatles. How polite of them.
IN closing, (stop applauding) I would please ask you to turn your assignments in on time. I am tired of having to chase you down. And if you must eat pizza/tacos, please refrain from staining your papers with them!!!!!!
Remember, the adult who mopes around feeling sorry for his sorry lot in life was more than likely a slacker student who felt that a C was an adequate grade.

First off, Hugo is where he should be, behind bars! Who would want to trade places with him?
Snow plowing alley's has a much larger problem then you might think. Many old alleys have garages and fences with up to the property line so a plw has no place to push the snow except through a fence. It is a much larger problem than you can ever imagine. What is realy needed but ust too costly is total snow removal. A bobcat or front end loader that can pick up the snow and drop it in a dump truck for removal. Just thought I ouwl pass along my 2 cents.
Hey, we had a flying nun so maybe we can have a singing judge.

Kudos to the city of Wilkes Barre for removing some of the snow near the downtown office buildings. It was a help in getting in and out of them today.
If you did a cartoon bubble over the heads of Rogers and Yonki, here's what it would say:
Rogers: "The stuff I need to go through to get elected".

I see the professors absence has mellowed him considerably. The poor guy is just so damn bitter. It looks to me like life just didnt work out at all the way he had in mind ever since Goldwater failed to get any votes! Now he finds himself old, alone and according to him in poor health with only Lulac as an outlet to vent. So sad, so sad to wind up so bitter after what he claims was a superior life. Professor you have my deepest sympathies. You must be so pleasant to be around. The other folks at the home must really look forward to your pontifications...
There is no doubt that Judge Ciavarella was tough on the juvenile offenders and when they looked at his record, it was the same from the first day he took the juvi bench to his last. He did believe in how he handled the kids and there are many teachers who saw him as the last chance these kids had to straighten out their lives. He got that heavy sentence because he flat out refused to say he took cash for kids. He stood by his original admission that he accepted money from the builder as a referral fee for putting the builder together with the owner and if he had reported the money, he would not be in jail. It is true that Conahan was the real thief in all of this and if you recall, on one of the tapes he is heard telling Powell to not mention the certain money in front of Ciavarella because he didn't know about it. I firmly believe that if Ciavarella didn't become friends with Conahan, there would never have been a dollar change hands. It was Conahan who closed the county facility but in all honesty, it was a mess and was operating on a temp. permit by the state and the real problem was the county commissioners refused to do any of the work required for it to meet standards. The term Kids for Cash is pure bull and it is a shame that the feds allow it to be used without saying a word. Neither judge was charged with taking cash for putting kids away. By the way, did Powell really need kids from Luzerne county to fill the Pittston Twp facility? Absolutely not, today it is filled to capacity and we do not have even one kid there.
The Prof is a Johnny One Note! Bob Dylan, the Beatles and President Obama are responsible for everything thats been wrong in the past 50 years! Now thats a realistic view.
I suppose Peanuts creator Chas Schultz and Mother Theresa had something to do with it too?

As someone who came of age during those times I think that the Professor is on to something. Dylan and The Beatles set the stage for us. It was "Choice Without Consequence" that they promoted and Obama is merely this generations Pied Piper.
The number of Boomers that have saved more money than their IQ is miniscule.
