FLAG FLAP
This week there was a big controversy over the request to raise the Dominican Flag over Hazleton City Hall. Mayor Joe Yanuzzi said no and was told that the Hibernian flag flew over the edifice in 2012. And then all hell broke loose.
Here’s my take on this. No one embraces ethnic history more than I do. I think the ceremonies and carrying on of traditions is extremely important. Those customs were brought over by my ancestors from the “old contry” to give us an appreciation from where we came from. But for every Slovak tradition we upheld, we were always reminded that we were Americans. And those who camr to this country would never go back in a heartbeat.
Through the years ethnic pride has been on display in this area through festivals and educational programs. The Luzerne County Folk Festival started by the late Paul Lauer and others gave voice to ethnic pride of many stripes. Wonderful ceremonies were held at the Luzerne County Courthouse especially when Kathy Bozinki was running them as PR Director.
I love hearing stories about people’s background. But I look at a request to fly a flag of another country over a government building this way. When a U.S. citizen who served in the military and is of Italian, Irish, Polish, Dominican, Cuban or whatever descent you can name, and is killed in action, the flag they put on the coffin is the stars and stripes. So let’s celebrate diversity, let’s honor everyone’s heritage but not on the top of a government building reserved for “our” flag. Never forget where you came from and honor the past. But we are all Americans living and dying under one flag.

Benedict has two major legacies.
1. He started the real conversation of church sex abuse by publicly apologizing numerous time and putting in motion the wheels of reform. Benedict was the Pope who met that issue head on. More clergy has been defrocked and thrown out since he started the process.
2. His resignation was ground breaking. By leaving in apparent good health, Benedict paved the way for a seriously ill Pope to take his leave.
Hard to believe that one year has passed.

Cartwright Announces $52.3 Million Available for Pennsylvania to Clean Up Abandoned Coal Mines
OSMRE provides Abandoned Mine Land (AML) grants to 28 coal-producing states and tribes. AML grants enable states to help eliminate dangerous conditions and pollution caused by past coal mining.
Between now and the end of September Pennsylvania will apply for its annual reclamation grant, after which time OSMRE will make the award amount available.
“These funds will allow the Commonwealth to reclaim abandoned mines in an environmentally safe manner while providing communities with much-needed jobs,” said Cartwright. “The entire state and especially the 17th District are blessed with a beautiful and precious natural landscape, and I will work to protect both the environment and the public from potentially harmful and dangerous abandoned mines.”
AML-funded projects include closing dangerous mine shafts, reclaiming unstable slopes, improving water quality by treating acid mine drainage, and restoring water supplies damaged by mining. The AML funds that OSMRE provides also support vitally needed well-paying jobs for communities in coal country.

Dave, well spoken in regards to the flying of "Old Glory".
I feel if any group wants to fly their flag at any public building it should be by itself. Not on the actual building that the American flag is flying on. Also most importantly never will this ethnic flag fly higher than the Stars n Stripes.

I really agree with you about Pope Benedict Yonk. It appears that his fate in history will be that he was the guy sandwiched between two rock star Popes.

I flew the Dominican flag in place of the US flag last week in solidarity with the group in Hazleton. Surprisingly, I was able to find one. And before anyone starts with that "How dare you!?" BS, spare me: It's my property and I'll fly whatever flag I damn well choose to on it and higher or lower than and in place of any other flag I choose. Deal with it!!!
OSMRE may want to consider saving some of that money to repair the damage that will be done from fracking.
I understand your position on the ethnic flag flying but I also feel that our flag is strong enough to bear the weight of a foreign flag. Yes, flag etiquette demands that no foreign flag fly higher than the Stars and Stripes but it also requires that in peace time, no other flag shall fly lower.
Personally I have no problem with our showing respect for our past. In Pittston city, it has been the policy going back as far as I can remember that on their special day, the ethnic groups would celebrate their history and fly their flag at city hall. The Lithuanian descendents in Pittston gather every year to celebrate their country's date of freedom and their flag is displayed both in Pittston and at the court house. The Irish flag has flown in the past and even today, the Italian flag flies along with the US flag at the statue of C. Columbus in South Pittston at the intersection of S Main St, Kennedy Blvd and Columbus Ave. The only problem I have with that is the Italian flag flies lower than the American flag and that is a break of US flag etiquette.

Various flags have flown from the court house flag poll over the years and never has it been a problem. In fact, back in the 80's my personal Irish flag was used in the court house ceremony honoring Ireland during the St Patrick's Day festivities.
By the way, There are few municipal buildings that do not have a free standing flag pole rather than a pole mounted to the building itself.
Considering the history of Hazleton's policy (state law) I have to wonder where this legal opinion was in 2012 or was it not important because the flag of Ireland is not a Latino flag? In my opinion, falling back on a law from the 1800's can do nothing but bring up thoughts of possible bigotry.
As an American born citizen and veteran, I take great pride in our flag and in fact my back yard contains a flag pole from which I fly the US flag daily. I have done this the majority of my adult life.

Ethnic pride is fine. And solidarity is fine. And celebrating one's ethnic heritage is fabulous and adds to the melting pot that is the U.S. But my friends who went to Mass on St. Patrick's Day and then marched in the parades, married Italians and feasted on the great foods, got drunk at three day Polish weddings, enjoyed the Greek cultures in dance and song fought under one flag in Iraq. Like others did in Vietnam, Korea and in WWII and I. The U.S. flag. Yonk is correct in his opinion at least I agree that no one would ever ask to put a Lutheran, Papal or synagogue flag up on a public building. If there is a separation of church and state, there should at least be a distinction between country of orgin and country of citizenship.
The Yonki blog, I can do it with my eyes closed, Kate Upton, Health Care, Cartwright, Bash the right wing, deify the Kennedys, moon over tall women, promote the shit out of WILK, love Obama, bash Obama.....then back to Kate Upton.

Yonk, you are correct about wagner's chances. i remember in '78 a split field could yield a low majority. remember when carter ran in iowa in '76, he won but finished second because the top vote getter was none of the above. true story.
