OREGON SHOOTING

EDITOR’S NOTE: As we were finishing up this edition we heard of the killings in Oregon where a loser decided to take 13 other innocent people with him. As in the past we won’t dignify his crime with any acknowledgement of his sorry existence. As in the past the loser took the easy way out and like a coward denied an answer as to why he did it. Our fervent hope is that if there are fires of hell, let them consume him into the ashes that even the devil isn’t fit to walk on.

KIM DAVIS AND THE POPE

Well a few things on the Pope meeting Kim Davis. It is no surprise that this meeting was kept secret. As a matter of fact it was pretty gutless. In my days at a Catholic school for 12 years, I was told that if you hide something, you are ashamed of something. The fact that this would have taken over the Papal news cycle is valid. If I were a PR guy for an entity I’d keep it under the hat if I had to do it. But one must wonder who made the first move, and what gain could be made by having a meeting with a person who has broken the laws of her state and has blocked the legal acquirement of a service that is secular. Francis will tell you that who is he to judge on the matters of gays in his flock. Maybe the Pope and his handlers might have used the same logic when this secret meeting took place. I'm hoping the Pope had very little information on the true ramifications of this "public (gag, spit, gag) servant."
As a Roman Catholic, I will never allow Kim Davis the opportunity to become some type of social martyr for a cause that chose to skulk in the shadows as the Pope spread sunshine everywhere else.
To paraphrase a poster who sometimes chastises me, “Frank, Frank Frank!”

DUELING E MAILS

Governor Tom Wolf sent me and a thousands of his friends an e mail backing Katie McGinty as his candidate for United States Senator. In the meantime Joe Sestak is sending more information on his campaign. The internet war has begun. Look for the ads to start hot and heavy by the end of the year. Congressman Matt Cartwright is supporting Sestak. Sestak ran in a tough Democratic year and some believe he should get a second chance. Apparently the State Democratic party doesn’t. More to come.

STATE BUDGET IMPASSE

This week Governor Wolf vetoed the stop gap funding for the state budget. That is going to put the state in a stalemate that will be unprecedented. Already there are school districts threatening law suits. Wolf’s administration said in July that the negative effects of the budget in Pennsylvania will be minimal. There are state agencies who rely on that supposition who will disagree.

BARLETTA BILL TO IMPROVE HOMELAND SECURITY FUSION CENTERS ADVANCES
FIRST STEP TO ENHANCING INFORMATION SHARING AMONG FEDERAL, STATE & LOCAL AUTHORITIES

Congressman Lou Barletta. (Photo: Lou Barletta’s office).
Legislation authored by Congressman Lou Barletta to clarify and enhance the partnership between the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the national network of fusion centers has been approved by the House Homeland Security Committee. A fusion center is a collaborative effort of two or more agencies that share resources and information to improve their ability to detect, prevent, and respond to terrorist or criminal activity. The bill, H.R. 3598, the Fusion Center Enhancement Act, now heads to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“As a former mayor, I know the importance of sharing information between local, state, and federal agencies,” Barletta said. “I have seen this problem firsthand, and know that more can be done to help our local law enforcement get the support they need from the federal government. This bill is one small step to make the fusion centers a better resource for the people who know our communities the best, our local law enforcement officers.”
The bill improves fusion centers by:
• Directing DHS to make sure its components are providing information and personnel to fusion centers to better cooperate with state and local officials.
• Requiring DHS to coordinate with fusion centers and State Homeland Security Advisors in carrying out assigned responsibilities.
• Requiring DHS to submit a report to Congress on its efforts to meet these requirements.
“Making sure that state and local law enforcement, fire, medical, and other emergency personnel have the necessary resources is a critical part of our homeland security strategy,” Barletta said. “This includes better access to information and intelligence. That’s what fusion centers are designed to accomplish.”

Our 1965 logo.
Before there was a Papal visit by Pope Francis in the fall, there was one five decades ago. Pope Paul VI visits the United States.
Paul becomes the first Pontiff to visit America. He appears for a Mass in Yankee Stadium and makes a speech at the United Nations….

in Pennsylvania many pilgrims make the trip to New York to see the Pope……in Lackawanna County the Mayor’s race heats up with both incumbent Bill Schmidt and James Walsh promising to increase services but keep the line on taxes and fifty years ago this week the number one song in LuLac land and America was “Catch Us If You Can” by The Dave Clark Five.
