The NAACP Wilkes-Barre branch announced that an observance of Martin Luther King Junior’s Birthday will be held at the Luzerne County Courthouse on Friday January 17th starting at 6pm. The theme of the program will be “Walk Together”. This event will be a ceremonial kick off to the MLK weekend. Chairman of the event and First Vice President of the branch David Yonki said, “We want the community to know that there will be more than one program to celebrate the life of Dr. King and wanted to make sure one venue was not overlapping another. The NAACP Wilkes-Barre branch’s event as well as the others are free and open to the public. Our group would like to give this three day weekend the historical perspective it deserves”.
Other events scheduled are at King’s College on Monday January 20th at 11AM and Wilkes University on Thursday January 23 starting at 11am. This marks the first time in a few years the NAACP has conducted the MLK commemoration at The Courthouse. “We are both grateful and excited to be partnering with the Courthouse for this event. Our organization has planned an inspirational program that will be a fitting remembrance of Dr. King’s life” said Yonki.
U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded two grants worth a combined total of $3,188,368 to The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education.
The Wright Center provides medical residency training for primary care physicians in Northeastern Pennsylvania and across the country in part through the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program. The THCGME program addresses physician workforce shortages, maldistribution and related escalating health care disparities in the U.S., particularly in rural and underserved areas, by providing funds for residency training in community-based primary care settings.
“I’m committed to making quality, affordable health care services more accessible here in the Eighth District,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the House Appropriations Committee. “Programs like this are key to ensuring our region has a strong pipeline of well-trained medical professionals so families can get the care they need. I applaud The Wright Center for being recognized for the critical primary care and workforce development resources it provides to Northeastern Pennsylvania residents.”
“Since its inception, The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education has been committed to creating a sustainable workforce of primary care physicians trained in community-based settings, as they are twice as likely to remain upon graduation in these places where they are most needed. Our daily efforts as the nation’s largest THC-GME Safety-Net Consortium are focused on improving both education and patient care delivery by enhancing care access and health outcomes. We are grateful and proud to accept these grants and remain a steadfast steward of HRSA-funded resources that help us better care for the vulnerable populations we serve. We thank Rep. Matt Cartwright for his continued support of legislation that shores up federal funds that allows our proven, mission-driven model to thrive,” said Linda Thomas-Hemak, MD, President, The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education.
