Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio and secretary of Housing and Urban Development under then-President Barack Obama, would have been the first Latino president, had the voters rallied behind him. He was the first Texas Democrat to run for president since 1976.
But he lagged behind other Democratic primary candidates in the polls and in campaign funds, telling supporters on Twitter that he needed to raise $800,000 by the end of October or his campaign would be “silenced for good.” He made a similar threat in an email to supporters back in September. Apparently, this time he meant it.
Castro’s campaign has struggled to climb the polls since he joined the race, and he failed to qualify for the last two Democratic debates in November and December.
U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded $1,034,770 to the Rural Health Corporation of Northeastern Pennsylvania (RHC), which is headquartered in Wilkes-Barre. The funds will be used to maintain RHC’s current scope of health care services in its seven locations throughout the region.
RHC provides comprehensive primary and preventive medical and dental services to residents of all ages and income levels within their service area. They accept many insurance options, including most commercial insurances, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Medicare and Medical Assistance.
“No one should have to avoid going to the doctor because they can’t afford the visit,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the House Appropriations Committee. “The Rural Health Corporation works to ensure people of all income levels have access to care, which is vital to fostering healthier and happier communities here in Northeastern Pennsylvania. I applaud their work and celebrate the continued funding of their much-needed services. I will continue advocating in Congress to support community health centers and improve health care equity in the Eighth District.”
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) is a federal government agency that works to enhance and protect the health and well being of all Americans. They fulfill that mission by providing for effective health and human services and fostering advances in medicine, public health and social services.
