ON PATRIOTISM AND INSURRECTION

Today the Capitol of the United States was overrun by extremists and cult members of Donald Trump. It was America’s own Beer putsch. Like Germany, this attempted revolution failed but it is a warning sign that the support of an American President under the auspices of a legendary political party has morphed from an expression of political philosophy to domestic terrorism.

 The people who traveled to Washington, D.C. bearing Trump and Confederate flags will tell you they are Patriots.

THEY ARE NOT! Using that term is an insult to all those who died on battlefields since the start of this great nation. It is an insult to those peaceful demonstrators who gave their lives in those actions.

Patriots do not challenge an election that was certified and verified by all fifty states.

Patriots do not justify their actions by saying they want to take their country back when they are hard pressed to tell you what they think is exactly missing.

Patriots do not believe blindly the 25,000 lies of their leader when it has been documented as pure fiction.

Patriots do not think they are the only ones in the country who care about religion, the flag, the military or its government.

Patriots do not attack its government when an election doesn’t go their way.

Patriots do not carry guns, or explosive devices to a “peaceful” rally.

Patriots do not justify their cowardly behavior by using “what abouts” in their arguments. They need to, if possible “man up” and take responsibility. 

Patriots do not storm a Capitol building of a country they allegedly love and trash it.

Patriots do not use the Constitution as a way to justify the bad behavior of their cult leader and themselves.

Patriots do not provide false equivalencies and compare the storming of a government institution to a peaceful protest of BLM.

Patriots should not attack the Judiciary when 60 court decisions don’t go their way.

Patriots don’t mock the rule of law under the guise of free speech.

Patriots do not think freedom is only for THEM, not others.

Patriots own what they do. If they choose to attack the very core of this country because of vanity, anger at their station in life, or were repeatedly brainwashed, they should not use the term Patriot.

In reality they are Domestic Terrorists. We should know their faces, we should know their names. In our communities they should be labeled as unpatriotic sympathizers of an administration that has undermined our national character.

Political beliefs are fine. But when a line is crossed like it was today, those ideals become an enemy of the nation itself. They morph into the Vichy of the French and the Nazis of Germany. Harsh to say but remember, Germany was a Republic. In America we never thought it would happen here. But it will if these extremists continue on this path.

The temptation on this day is to say “We are better than this”. Well the stark truth is “We are not!” Not all of us. We MUST know there is a segment of America that are now dangerous and committed federal crimes today. The bus companies should have manifests and get the names of the participants and prosecute accordingly. 

The enablers will call me a Commie (that’s what the Nazis called the Russians in WWII) and will say that “their freedom is being taken away”.

Their freedom ENDS when they storm a federal building, terrorize government workers, and threaten duly elected representatives of the government. A government and country they profess to love.

To those domestic terrorists who masquerade as patriots, if there are consequences from this insurrection, I guess in this case, the love you found,  that mindless love can hurt.
