TOP 5 PENNSYLVANIA STORIES

1.       SHAPIRO TRIUNCES TRUMPANZEE: Democrat Josh Shapiro won the race for governor of Pennsylvania, securing the office for four years in a state where the future of abortion rights is on the line, along with management of the 2024 election in a battleground that is often decisive in choosing presidents. Shapiro, the state’s two-term elected attorney general, ran to the middle on several key issues and smashed Pennsylvania’s campaign finance record in a powerhouse campaign, swamping Republican Doug Mastriano in a deluge of TV ads. He had led polls from the start over Mastriano, and his victory — in a year in which Democrats nationally faced headwinds, including high inflation — made him the first governor to be elected to succeed a member of his party since 1966.

2.       THE JOURNEY OF JOHN FETTERMAN: WN, John Fetterman, the state lieutenant governor, has won Pennsylvania’s high-voltage race for an open Senate seat, defeating celebrity TV doctor Mehmet Oz, bringing an end to one of the nastiest and most expensive campaigns of the year as both parties treated it as a potential tipping point for control of the chamber.  Fetterman will succeed Sen. Pat Toomey, a Republican who opted against seeking re-election. Just after 2 a.m. ET, Fetterman led by more than 2 percentage points with about 93% of expected votes being reported.

3.       TRUMPANZEE SCOTT PERRY LINKED TO INSURRECTION: Since Storming of Capitol, Scott Perry Downplays, Dismisses, and Lies About the Election and Insurrection Fostered by lies, mistruths, and partisan rage, the storming of the Capitol on January 6th was one of the darkest days in history for American Democracy. In fomenting the lie about the election and downplaying its aftermath, Rep. Scott Perry has embarrassed and dishonored his office and the people of Pennsylvania. Furthermore, Perry pushed the big lie before january 6th

Perry attended “Stop the Steal” rallies, worked to oust the acting attorney general, spread lies about the election, joined a lawsuit to invalidate millions of votes, and opposed certifying the election in PA — including his own reelection. Heck, he even wrote an op-ed attempting to justify his attack on democracy and gave a speech after the rioters had been expelled justifying the lie that led to the storming.

 

4.       TOM WOLF’S LAST YEAR IN OFFICE: Gov. Tom Wolf's primary focus was convincing the Republican-controlled Legislature to modernize how state aid is distributed to Pennsylvania's public schools — a shift that could carry a price tag of $1 billion. Doing so would direct more money to Pennsylvania's poorest school districts — including districts with the state's biggest proportions of Black students — as well as to growing suburban districts whose share of state aid reflects early 1990s demographics or political compromises in the Legislature.

5.       DEMOCRATS GET EDGE IN STATE HOUSE:  State Rep. Joanna McClinton (D) is likely to become the first Black woman to serve as speaker of the Pennsylvania House, after Democrats unexpectedly won the majority in the chamber.

Democrats have flipped the Pennsylvania state House of Representatives, unexpectedly gaining control of the legislative chamber for the first time in a decade.  The Associated Press confirmed that Democrats had flipped 12 seats, enough to hold a narrow majority in the state House, on Saturday.  However, Dems are in a tenuous position because The situation has arisen as a result of the death of one newly elected member of the House and the resignation of two others following their successful elections to other roles. A special election for a seat in the Pennsylvania state Senate could also further complicate matters as a Republican member of the House is seeking election to that seat on January 31.
