AGING EVENT THIS MONDAY

NAACP GETS SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE TO WILKES-BARRE

SOUTH CAROLINA REPUBLICANS’ BILL WOULD PUNISH ABORTION WITH DEATH PENALTY

A group of Republicans in South Carolina’s state House have proposed legislation to make getting an abortion punishable by the death penalty. The measure would amend the state’s code of laws to grant zygotes, or fertilized eggs, “equal protection under the homicide laws of the state.” The bill has gathered the support of nearly two dozen South Carolina House Republicans who now co-sponsor it.

Meanwhile, in Texas, a man has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against three women he accuses of “illegally” assisting his ex-wife in having a medication abortion. Texas’s abortion ban allows private citizens to file civil suits against abortion providers or anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion after six weeks.

This is plain old crazy. What these reactionaries are doing is telling women how to live their lives. The very fact that a woman who was raped, needed a medical procedure to save her life and then is charged with murder is just plain ignorant. We might as well go back to the dark ages.  Jason Barsky from WILK said, “This is why I’m glad I live in the north”. He’s right. 24 South Carolina House GOP people decide they want to impose their beliefs on the majority of American people. They are most likely MEN who don’t have to bear a child. Men who care about the fetus UNTIL birth and then they vote against every program to help them.

Lincoln freed the slaves which was a good thing. He as was compassionate toward the south which was  hug mistake. He overestimated the intelligence of these dim witted slobs and underestimated their innate stupidity.

REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS WANT OLDER AMERICANS TO WORK FOR FOOD STAMPS

AND THEY’LL CALL YOU A LAZY COUCH POTATO

CBS News reports that the food-stamp program already has work requirements for people the U.S. government defines as "able-bodied adults without dependents" — in other words, younger workers who aren't disabled and who don't have kids or other dependents. But a group of Republican lawmakers say tougher work requirements are needed to close a loophole, as well as to get more older food-stamp recipients working in exchange for their benefits. The bill would also require older workers to prove they have a job or are in a training program in order to receive food stamps. Currently, able-bodied adults between 18 to 49 and who don't have children are required to work 20 hours a week or enroll in a work training program to receive aid from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, the formal name for the food-stamp program.

SNAP has frequently drawn scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, who in recent years have proposed similar laws to stiffen work requirements for recipients. The Trump administration had also sought to tighten work requirements. The latest proposal should be rejected, the Center on Budget and Policy Proposals (CBPP) said Wednesday in a report. Most adults who are under 65 and who get SNAP benefits are already working or are temporarily between jobs.

Meanwhile Representative Matt Gaetz referred to SNAP recipients as lazy couch potatoes. THIS IS YOUR MODERN DAY REPUBLICAN PARTY AT WORK.

CARTWRIGHT STATEMENT ON MEDICARE DISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN

Congressman Matt Cartwright (Photo: LuLac archives)

Congressman Matt Cartwright  released the following statement in the wake of a disinformation campaign by the insurance industry that the White House aims to cut Medicare:

"Social Security and Medicare represent our promise to seniors of a secure retirement, and I’m committed to protecting these programs. I’ve been a strong advocate for the protection of Social Security and Medicare since my first day in office and continue to serve as a champion for seniors, making sure we provide every retiree with the financial security they deserve.

I was a proud co-sponsor of the Social Security 2100, a Sacred Trust (H.R. 5723), and the Social Security 2100 Act (H.R. 860),  bills to strengthen and expand Social Security. I also co-sponsored legislation to expand Medicare to include vision, dental and hearing coverage.

Over the past several weeks, the insurance industry has been running a massive, $2 million disinformation campaign to scare seniors into believing the Biden administration is cutting Medicare. Insurance companies, backed by some Republicans in Congress, are attempting to flip the true narrative of their intent to cut programs like Medicare, spreading falsehoods to scare seniors and maintain their sky-high profits.

I know that Medicare delivers real value to millions of seniors.  I also recognize that it’s one of the most popular and important services the government provides, and I’ll keep fighting to keep it that way."

CASEY ON SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN ACT ENACTMENT: THIS LAW SAVED FAMILIES AND KEPT BUSINESSES AFLOAT

AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN PROVIDED $1,400 STIMULUS CHECKS AND MONTHLY CHILD TAX CREDIT PAYMENTS TO PENNSYLVANIA FAMILIES

IN TWO YEARS SINCE PASSAGE, PA HAS RECEIVED AT LEAST $38 BILLION IN INVESTMENTS FROM RESCUE PLAN

U.S. Senator Bob Casey has released the following statement ahead of the two-year anniversary of the American Rescue Plan Act being signed into law by President Biden:

“Two years ago, Democrats passed the American Rescue Plan to provide American families with a lifeline during the worst public health and economic crises our nation has seen in a century. It met the moment of uncertainty Pennsylvania was facing,” Senator Casey said. “This law continues to deliver billions of dollars to our Commonwealth and has brought Pennsylvania back stronger than it was before the pandemic. Thanks to President Biden’s agenda, our economy is thriving, unemployment is down, and families have peace of mind knowing that Pennsylvania is a place of opportunity to raise a family.”

To date, Pennsylvania has received at least $38 billion from the American Rescue Plan, including $1,400 stimulus checks and monthly Child Tax Credit payments for Pennsylvania parents. Funding from the Rescue Plan helped get the vast majority of Americans vaccinated from COVID-19 and reopened schools across the Commonwealth. . Additionally, the law vastly expanded subsidies for health insurance purchased through Pennie, the health insurance marketplace, eliminating premiums for some Pennsylvanians and significantly lowering health care costs for many more. The law also provided investments for health centers, mental health, home and community-based services, housing, child care, small businesses, public transportation, and more. Pennsylvania also received investments from economic development initiatives created by the Rescue Plan, including the over $62 million for the Southwestern Pennsylvania New Economy Collaborative to grow robotics and artificial intelligence sector in Southwestern PA, and over $22 million for Philaworks, Philadelphia’s workforce development board to create a regional workforce training program.

AFTER BUDGET ADDRESS, GOVERNOR JOSH SHAPIRO HIGHLIGHTS PLAN TO ADDRESS WORKFORCE SHORTAGE, COMMONSENSE INVESTMENTS IN PUBLIC SAFETY AT PENNSYLVANIA STATE POLICE ACADEMY

Governor Josh Shapiro (Photo: LuLac archives)

Governor Josh Shapiro highlighted key pieces of his commonsense budget proposal during a tour of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in Hershey, PA. Every Pennsylvanian deserves to be safe and feel safe in their community – and safe communities start with ensuring police departments are well-staffed, well-funded, and well-equipped.

“From local and county police forces to our Pennsylvania State Police, law enforcement officers protect and serve the people of Pennsylvania everyday – but critical police staffing shortages at the local level are putting more of the burden on the State Police,” said Governor Josh Shapiro. “That’s why my budget includes commonsense proposals to address worker shortages and hire more troopers, invest in our communities and anti-violence initiatives, and support the work of law enforcement by sustainably funding the Pennsylvania State Police. Together, we will build safer communities all across Pennsylvania.”

“Governor Shapiro’s budget shows that public safety is a top priority, as it is for the citizens of Pennsylvania,” said Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris. “The creation of a dedicated funding source for PSP and the funding of additional cadet classes and equipment will make our communities safer and ensure our department is well-staffed, well-funded, and well-equipped.”

To address worker shortages, Governor Shapiro’s budget invests $24.7 million in job retention and recruitment efforts to specifically attract more nurses, police officers, and teachers, proposing a refundable tax credit for new workers in those fields and putting up to $2,500 back in their pocket every year for up to three years.

Additionally, the budget proposes $16.4 million for four new trooper cadet classes in 2023-24, which would hire and train 384 new troopers, helping to fill staffing gaps and provide more coverage across the Commonwealth.

Combatting violence is also a crucial building block to creating real opportunity and advancing real freedom for Pennsylvanians. This budget makes record state funding investments in grants and technical assistance to address community violence throughout the Commonwealth, including $105 million through the successful Violence Intervention and Prevention program housed in the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD).

Finally, the Governor’s budget will sustainably fund the Pennsylvania State Police by creating a Public Safety and Protection Fund, reducing PSP’s reliance on the Motor License Fund. In doing so, an estimated $1.5 billion will be available for road and bridge projects while ensuring law enforcement has the resources they need to keep our communities safe.

1954

Finland and Germany officially end their state of war……Việt Minh forces under General Võ Nguyên Giáp began a massive artillery bombardment on the French military, beginning the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the climactic battle of the First Indochina War. The Battle of Điện Biên Phủ (French: Bataille de Diên Biên Phu pronounced [bataj də djɛ̃ bjɛ̃ fy]; Vietnamese: Chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ, IPA: [t͡ɕjěn zîk̚ ɗîənˀ ɓīən fû]) was a climactic confrontation of the First Indochina War that took place between 13 March and 7 May 1954. It was fought between the French Union's colonial Far East Expeditionary Corps and Viet Minh communist revolutionaries. The United States was officially not a party to the war, but it was secretly involved by providing financial and material aid to the French Union, which included CIA contracted American personnel participating in the battle. The People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union similarly provided vital support to the Viet Minh, including most of their artillery and ammunition. The French began an operation to insert, and support, their soldiers at Điện Biên Phủ, deep in the autonomous Tai Federation up in the hills northwest of Tonkin. The operation's purpose was to cut off Viet Minh supply lines into the neighboring Kingdom of Laos (a French ally), and draw the Viet Minh into a major confrontation in order to cripple them. The plan was to resupply the French position by air, a strategy adopted based on the belief that the Viet Minh had no anti-aircraft capability and 69 years ago this week the number one song in LuLac land and America was “The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane” by the Ames Brothers.
