Senator Hillary Clinton returned to her Scranton roots tonight addressing an overflow crowd at Scranton High School. She made some key points in her speech that touted her candidacy, focused on her memories of visiting here as a child and outlining a plan she has for her Presidency should she be successful.
Senator Clinton criticizing the "misplaced priorities" of President Bush's spending policies. She then pitched her health care plan as the best option to provide coverage for everyone. The Senator, not mentioning her opponent's name said that her health plan would cover everyone. She made the point if "you were happy with your own health care, you could keep it".
Mrs. Clinton hit upon themes of economic populism early in her speech.
"The 1990s were good for Pennsylvania, and we were feeling good," she said, recalling the eight years she spent as first lady during her husband's time as president. She called it a time of "peace and prosperity" for the region.

She lauded the mayors of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre for working hard together to "revitalize these great cities."
Clinton also recounted her family's history in the Scranton area, including her grandfather's 54 years working in the Scranton Lace Mill. She made references to the Cort Street Methodist Church telling how she was baptized there along with other family member.

In a burst of enthusiasm, the Senator made the comment that she and Governor Rendell would be attending the St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday.
The candidate hit all the right notes and ignited her crucial Pennsylvania effort for the Presidential nomination. After Tuesday's Mississippi primary, Pennsyvania will hold the only contested primary. Primary date is April 22nd.
NOTES AND SUCH
In a very deft move, organizers had Wilkes Barre Mayor Tom Leighton introduce Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty who in turn introduced Ltn. Governor Katherine Baker Knoll. Knoll, who sometimes rambles a bit stayed on message and introduced Governor Rendell who introduced the New York Senator to thunderous applause. It was a good way to make sure that "no elected official was left behind" in all the hoopla.....The people behind the Senator were members of a bus caravan that Mayor Doherty took to Ohio. The Senator acknowledged their service and made the comment that it made a difference in the vote.....While many got in to see the Senator, many did not. The overflow crowd went into another area to hear the speech.....WILK's Nancy Kman and Steve Corbett along with Sue Henry back in the studio did a great job with commentary and a blow by blow account of events leading up to the entrance of the Presidential candidate.....Senator Casey and Congressman Kanjorski were in Washington and not able to attend. Ironically GOP Senator Arlen Specter was in Scranton earlier in the day.....All three local network TV stations covered the event. However national attention was diminished because the cable news networks were focused on the scandal involving New York Governor Elliot Spitzer....Senator Clinton travels to Harrisburg for an event at The Forum Tuesday and then on to Temple University Tuesday evening for a campaign rally.

WNEP had a live feed on their web site. It was nice because I was at the office. Though not a Hilary supporter, my love of politics pushed me to watch and listen.

Having Tommy Leighton on that stage was a "gimme" from Doherty and Rendell. They could have just as easily ignored him.
All in all, I thought TV coverage was excellent, with WNEP owning the story every step of the way.
The news that Hilary and Eddie will be back for Scranton's parade this weekend is huge. Maybe security will be such that the arrest count will be down this year. What was it last year, roughly in the mid 50s?
That's over 50 people cuffed and arrested - not handed citations, but rather cuffed, arrested, and stuffed in a drunk tank. Nice.
Spitzer needs to resign, plain and simple. What an arrogant, smug, self-righteous asshole. All the national outlets are going on and on about his "political life" being in jeopardy.
Holy Christ, we've all gone insane. He does what he did and the only thing that matters is this slob's political life?
I shouldnt have to be saying this, but the comment is sincere and well intended.
Lets hope everyone survives the St Pats Day Parade in Scranton this year. Sadly it has become a drunken
spectacle and not the family affair its drummed up to be. Bad reflection on the city if not the Irish!

I tune in to WYOU and there you are talking politics with Mayor McNulty and the hunk from 22. Then I see the tie. Donald Trump gold. I'm guessing Donna Karan. WHEN I WAS AT WRKC FM IN WILKES BARRE IN THE MID 70s, I HAD MY TIES "PRE TIED" BECAUSE I HAD NO IDEA HOW TO DO IT. MY FATHER AND UNCLES GAVE UP WITH MY LACK OF COORDINATION. A GUY NAMED BRIAN PORTER WHO WORKED AT THE RADIO STATION AND WAS DEEP INTO TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION TAUGHT ME HOW TO TIE A NECKTIE. I NOW OWN MORE THAN 100. IT IS BECAUSE OF BRIAN'S INNER SERENITY AND PATIENCE THAT MANY A TIE SALESMAN HAD GOOD SALES DAYS BECAUSE OF ME.
