BREAKING NEWS

RON ALLEN DIES

Ron Allen, an original member of the WARM Sensational Seven and renowned sportscaster on WARM Radio died this morning at 7AM in Hospice in Scranton. Allen began his career at WARM in 1958, was known for his deejay career where his sidekick was "Mother Fletcher". Allen hosted the TOP 40 Saturday Countdown from 1pm to 6pm weekly as well as a daily music show from 3 to 6pm and then later 1 to 4pm. In the late 60s, he expanded the WARM sports department adding local football and basketball and hosted the Ron Allen Sportsline for decades. Allen had a brief hiatus from WARM in the 70s going to Pocono Downs as a PR man but his main career remained at WARM where he remained until the early 90s. He was the creator of many contests and promotions. His slogan, "It's Only WARM for Me" became a catch phrase that not only promoted the Mighty 590 but became part of the area lexicon. Just had a surreal experience. Reading your blog on Ron Allen who was one of my favorites and in the background wifey has the TV news on. Word for word Yonk, that's what I heard as I was reading. Break that news and give this boy a mike again! And Ron, RIP, you were the man for decades!

Ron was really something else. He was an amazing guy to be around if you were covering sports in northeastern Pa. He had enough quirks to fill Lackawanna County Stadium, but that's what made him such a character. He could be abrasive, but if he liked you, you never had to ask him twice for a favor. If there's a spring training in the sky, he'll be there.

Worked with Ron at WARM long ago. He was thought by some to be rude and abrasive and he could be, but I liked him and we got along great.
He was terrific on sports and other trivia and a totally professional broadcaster. I was lucky, although it was years after WARM's heyday, to work with GG, Terry McNulty and Ron Allen. They all belong in the PA Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Pete
