SUPREMES ON GAY MARRIAGE

In a victory for same sex couples today, the Supreme Court pulverized a provision of a federal law denying federal benefits to married gay couples. That law stated legally married same-sex couples could not get tax, health and pension benefits. The ruling also cleared the way for the resumption of same-sex marriage in California. In a second decision, the Court declared California’s Proposition 8 law “unconstitutional.”
President Obama made this statement: "The laws of our land are catching up to the fundamental truth that millions of Americans hold in our hearts: when all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free,” “I’ve directed the Attorney General to work with other members of my Cabinet to review all relevant federal statutes to ensure this decision, including its implications for Federal benefits and obligations, is implemented swiftly and smoothly.”
Congressman Matt Cartwright issued this statement: “In recent years, both California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act became symbols of discrimination around the country and around the world. Today, ‘equality for all’ prevailed. I applaud both rulings made by the Supreme Court this morning. The Defense of Marriage Act treated loving, committed gay and lesbian couples as a separate and lesser class of people. The Supreme Court has righted that wrong, and our country is better off for it. In striking down Section 3 of DOMA, the Court ensures that married gay and lesbian couples are fully recognized by their government and that they and their children qualify for the host of rights and benefits designed to strengthen and protect American families. For married couples living in states that do not recognize their marriages, however, there is still uncertainty. The federal government must ensure that these couples receive full range of federal agency and federal policy recognition and respect that they deserve. I urge the administration to provide policy and administrative clarity to these couples and take every possible step to ensure they receive fair treatment. I am committed to working with the president to make that happen.”
This ruling by the Supreme Court signals a recognition in America that all people can love who they want. And get the same benefits. It is the right thing to do. At long last.  Plus, it's common sense. People have a right to figure out their own relationships. It usually works out in the end if it's meant to be. No matter what the sex.

Today’s news was a huge conservative victory, because you can no longer deprive someone of an extremely traditional value that makes your life better by curtailing promiscuity and destructive lifestyles.

I'm sure that Yonk will agree that marriage to our wives made us better men.

As a right-winger, I want to impose that belief on others because that’s what right-wingers do. As a left-winger Yonk agrees because he feels it's the right thing to do.

Lets all of us now urge gay activists to move on to real challenges in this world. Namely, “radical Islam” and it’s harsh treatment of homosexuals.

Go to a mosque.

Think about your compatriots in Iran, in the Middle East who are dying because of sexual orientation.

Your fight is not over. There are others who need your help.

Two big issues this week by the Supreme Court and you are the only guy writing about it. Thanks for your hard work.

That video was is a pretty good depiction of life and relationships in America. I know Yonk likes that song but watch the video. Boy meets girl, girl thinks he's a schmoe, girl meets girl, guy feels bad, another girl sees guy with rag top and wants to console him......the Court simply confirmed what we all know, "obla di, oblada, life goes on......."

Mans law on this earth is only for a very short period time. I am glad that when I meet my maker I will not have to answer for any of this latest supreme court decision mess.
Enjoy it while it lasts.

To 8:50 "Today’s news was a huge conservative victory"

Are you nuts? This goes against the very core of Conservatism. Bachman and her fellow nuts did a TV press conferance tearing their hair out of this ruling. This is totally a Progressive issue. YTo quote my hero Barney Frank, On what planet do you spend most of your time?

I would like to muster up some passion over this issue, but I simply don't care. If foolish people wish to chain themselves to another who are we to stand in their way? I would like to see bigamy and polyigamy done away with also.
Never really understood what business it was of the state to get involved in people's personal lives.

"Never really understood what business it was of the state to get involved in people's personal lives."

Does that include the regulations that force us to buy corn infused gas, that require us to submit to random roadside breathalyzer checks, dictating where you can send your kids to school, laws against price gouging, being arrested for videotaping cops from your own porch, EPA telling you what you can and can't do, licensing laws, gender/racial parity suits, pandering to pro sports over the citizenship, pipeline prevention, FDA obstructing medical developments, not allowing us to buy health insurance like we buy car insurance - across state lines, etc.?

The older I get the more the list grows.

David, great follow up on both SC rulings. The video was a real memory shaker, brought to mind Garth Brooks' song, Thank God for Unanswered Prayers. As a poster commented, it all works out in the end.
