The LuLac Edition #2687, July 2nd, 2014
You saw it here first folks a few weeks ago when Mitt Romney started making noises about the President’s policies as well as making appearances on the Sunday Morning Talk shows. The longer there seems to no consensus for a nominee on the GOP side as well as a party split wide open, the more likely there will be a Romney exploratory committee in 2015. Talk is there are reunion dinners going on of former Romney staffers. It will be an uphill battle though, Romney will be fighting history, the last time a person who won a nomination and lost the Presidency and was renominated in the next cycle was in the 1950's when Adlai Stevenson did it in 1956.
Fifty years ago today President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Right Bill of 1964. The genesis of this bill began the weekend of President Kennedy’s national wake. In a meeting with advisers Johnson was urged to not mention Civil Rights as a cornerstone of his Presidency. According to historians Johnson replied, “Then what the hell is the Presidency for?”
The opposition from Johnson’s former southern supporters was fierce. Stalwarts like Richard Russell of Georgia and James Eastland of Mississippi reminded Johnson it was their votes that made him Majority Leader after only a few years in the Senate. But Johnson was adamant in getting this done.
Johnson got four key Senators, his successor as Majority Leader Mike Mansfield and Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, Democrats, along with Thomas Kuchel of California, and Everett Dirksen of Illinois to spearhead the passage of the bill. There was a block of 18 Southern Democrats who would filibuster. Humphrey was in charge of having enough supportive Senators on hand (sleeping dormitory style in offices) in case the filibuster suddenly stopped and a vote would be called.
In June the bill passed 73 to 27. Johnson signed it fifty years ago today.
Congressman Matt Cartwright held a fundraiser event the other night at the Woodlands. The invite came from a virtual who’s who in the legal and political community. Jarrett J. Ferentino, Esq., Girard J. Mecadon, Esq., David Fusco, Edward Ciarimboli, Esq., Neil O’Donnell, Esq. Hon. Cassandra Coleman-Corcoran, Hon. Robert Boyer, Kris and Robyn Jones, Gino Bartoli, Thomas Malloy, Robert Betnar, Esq., Laura Dennis, Esq., and William E. Vinsko, Esq. were the movers behind the event. On a hot summer night during a holiday week Cartwright pulled a good, enthusiastic crowd that agrees with his stewardship f the Congressional seat he holds.
Cartwright explained that it is his mission to work across the aisle, get to know all members of Congress and fine some common ground. In a short address, the Congressman said that even if he finds one thing in common with a fellow Congressman, he can get them to help hour bog editor with Congressman Cartwright. him co sponsor a bill to help constituents.
So the Supreme Court in a 5 to 4 vote sided with The Hobby Lobby on an aspect of the Affordable Care Act. The court ruled that for-profit employers with religious objections can opt out of providing contraception coverage under The Affordable Care Act.
Politico reports that the court’s four liberal justices called it a decision of “startling breadth” and said that it allows companies to “opt out of any law (saving only tax laws) they judge incompatible with their sincerely held religious beliefs.”
To me this opens up a huge can of worms giving business owners not only control over employees who in most of these they can fire at will but also over their private lives. From a political standpoint, this will be very interesting because access to contraception is more popular than the lawsuit itself. Look for the Democrats to run hard on this. In the meantime, it is interesting that five males voted yes on this suit. Just saying.
BUDGET PASSES BUT CORBETT LOOKS IT OVER
The State Legislature passed a 29.1 billion dollar budget the other night. But Governor Corbett said he won’t sign it until he gets more meaningful legislation to pass pension reform. That legislation would reduce future public employee pension benefits to bring a savings of more than $10 billion over 30 years. But Democrats were united in opposition, and some Republicans opposed it. The vote was close. The 108-95 vote in the House and the 26-24 Senate That tells you that even in a GOP controlled legislators there was a close vote. That tells you all you need to know about Governor Corbett’s legislative clout. The Governor has until July 9th to sign the budget.MEDIA MATTERS

Be careful, Mr Yonki. You are hanging out with too many lawyers!
AND using insane "occupy..." poster quotes. Really?
Hobby Lobby never objected to covering birth control per se.
It already covers 16 kinds of birth control for its employees. But it objected to paying for what it considers to be abortifacients, which don't prevent a pregnancy but terminate one.
The pro-abortion-rights lobby can argue that "abortion" and "birth control" are synonymous terms, but that doesn't make it true.
The Hobby Lobby decision opens the door for closely held companies to deny coverage of all forms of birth control, if they can plausibly argue that doing so would violate their conscience.
The decision doesn't apply to large, publicly held corporations, but even if it did, it is unlikely that many companies would go down that path. And even if they did, birth control would not be "banned"; employees simply would have to pay for it themselves.
This notion that denying a subsidy for a product is equivalent to banning that product is one of the odder tenets of contemporary liberalism.
At the heart of this, and so many other recent controversies, is an honest disagreement about how society should be organized.
For liberals (and far too many Republicans), businesses should be de facto, if not de jure, extensions of government. If something is desirable, businesses should be forced to impose it. The fact that the owner disagrees or that it is not in the business' economic interest is immaterial.
And it's not just businesses. Recall that the Obama administration has tried to force explicitly religious groups to betray their beliefs as well.
Obviously, there's room for nuance here. Few people think that we should scrap minimal workplace safety rules, for instance. No one thinks the Church of Satan should be permitted ritual human sacrifice. But when in doubt, the government should err on the side of "Let do and let pass, the world goes on by itself!"
Not everything is your boss' business, or anybody else's.
Actually Stevenson was re-nominated in 1956 and the last person to lose the Presidency and be re-nominated was Richard Nixon. Even though Nixon lost in 1960 and skipped out on 1964 (smartly), he saw victory in '68, which would have been a landslide instead of the squeaker it was had George Wallace not been a third party candidate.
REgardless, I agree that it would not be a surprise to see a Romney candidacy for the third time. Possibly, just possibly, the group of GOP contenders will be so far right they will eat each others votes up leaving Romney the nominee by default (kind of like 2012). However, if a few more moderates (compared to the far far right GOP crowd, I mean), such as Jeb Bush enter the race, it could end up being a good fight at the Convention. I do not, however, count Gov. Christie in that group, since the Bridgegate affair. Involved in it or not, perception is everything and his prospects are over...and he knows it.
Bless You.

CORRECT, I AMENDED THE EDITION BECAUSE I SHOULD HAVE WROTE "IN THE NEXT CYCLE." APPRECIATE THE NUDGE THERE. AS ALWAYS I VALUE YOUR INSTITUTIONAL KNOWLEDGE. I THOUGHT AL GORE WOULD TRY TO DO A BID SIMILAR TO NIXON'S '68 RUN IN '08, DIDN'T HAPPEN.
HUMPHREY TRIED FOR THE NOMINATION IN '72 BUT NEVER GOT THE NOD. IT IS DIFFICULT FOR THAT TO HAPPEN BUT I HAVE A GUT FEELING ABOUT THIS ROMNEY THING.
BLESS YA BACK.

I'M GOOD, I JUST AVOID THE TALL FEMALE BARRISTERS FROM PITTSBURGH.
The Civil Rights Bill passed because Lyndon Johnson used the Kennedy aura masterfully and his own massive persuasion skills and because there were once men like Hubert Humphrey and Everett Dirksen who were leaders followed respectfully by other legislators
who actually cared about this country.
Unlike the weasels and obstructionists who populate Washington today!
Celebrate the country tomorrow, but at the same time be ashamed!
Wave your flags, but take a good hard look...
Hillary could spot Mitt 100 electoral votes and still crush him,
thats if she runs. If she doesnt the Dems are about as bad off as the GOP for a winning candidate. Who do you project as a possible candidate is Ms Clinton opts not to run? Biden doesnt stand a chance and I cant think of a Dem.
RGB
Maybe Harold Stassen will return from the dead and run one more time for the GOP!
Everybody have a good 4th and dont blow your fingers off.

Actually, I believe if Gore had run in 2004 he may very well have beaten W.
The Dems were out for blood after 2000 and Gore would not have had to worry about a primary challenge from Hillary in 04.
Kerry ran such an inept campaign (keeping his mouth shut when aspursions were cast on his war record) that it cost him OHIO.
I believe had Gore been the nominee (and I believe in 04 it was his for the asking) the Dem base would have been thrice as entusiastic in turnout giving him the edge in Ohio (and perhaps Florida).
Just a belief, we will never know.
Bless You.

I AGREE TO A POINT. GORE WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD CANDIDATE BUT AFTER 911 THE BUSH CAMPAIGN MACHINERY WAS IN PLACE TO MAKE AMERICANS BELIEVE THE REPUBLICANS WERE MORE PREPARED TO DEAL WITH TERRORISM THAN THE DEMS. LOOK AT THE RESULTS OF THE 2002 MID TERMS. I THINK THE GOP WOULD HAD A FIELD DAY WITH THE FACT THAT UNDER CLINTON GORE, BIN LADEN BUILT UP HIS MINIONS.
AT A FOURTH OF JULY FAMILY EVENT YESTERDAY WE WERE SPEAKING OF OBAMA'S LACK OF EXPERIENCE. HIS 4 YEARS IN THE SENATE WHEN '08 BEGAN WOULD HAVE EQUALED HRC'S 4 YEARS IN THE SENATE SEAT FROM NEW YORK. SHOULD HILLARY HAVE GONE FOR IT AND NOT WAITED? MAYBE.
Kerry ran such an inept campaign (keeping his mouth shut when aspursions were cast on his war record) that it cost him OHIO.
YOU HAVE BOB SHRUM THE MASTER BLOWHARD STRATEGIST TO THANK FOR THAT. THE GUY WROTE PART OF ONE GOOD SPEECH, TEDDY KENNEDY'S "THE DREAM WILL NEVER DIE" EFFORT AT THE '80 CONVENTION AND PEOPLE THINK HE'S A SMART POL. PLEASE!!! HE AND KERRY BLEW THAT ELECTION BY NOT RESPONDING FAST ENOUGH. YOU HAVE MORE POLITICAL ACUMEN THAT HE WILL EVER HAVE.
MY BIGGEST FEAR WITH HRC IN 2016 IS THAT SHE WILL HIRE THE SAME INEPT PEOPLE (MARK PENN FOR ONE) THAT SHE DID IN '08. LET US NEVER FORGET THAT OBAMA GOT THAT NOMINATION BY A SCANT 312 VOTES MAINLY FROM THE CAUCUS STATES. THE MYTH IS THAT HE WAS THE OVERWHELMING FAVORITE. NOPE. IN FEBRUARY OF 2008 OBAMA SWEPT 11 CONTESTS IN A ROW. THEY WERE SMALL IN NUMBER BUT ACCOUNTED FOR 287 OF THE 312 VOTE DIFFERENCE. THAT WAS THE FAULT OF THE MULTI MILLION DOLLAR CAMPAIGN THAT SAT FAT AND HAPPY AS THE HUNGRY OBAMA FOLKS WENT AFTER THE LIKES OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS, D.C. (HOW THE HELL DO THE CLINTONS NOT WIN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA>>) AND DEMOCRATS ABROAD????
Kerry was a lousy candidate. He should have attacked the Showboaters//Swiftboaters and instead clammed up.
Kerry would not have made a good president, period. Michael Dukakis was a tragedy of comic proportions.
His tank ride remains one of the highlights/lowlights of campaign history.
Al Gore was robbed although some of it was his own doing. Not having the great campaigner out there was beyond stupid!
The Democrats are masters of screwing up elections, but nothing can ever match John McCains choice of the Moose Huntin Mama from Alaska!
Lord knows how these two parties will muddle through in 2016. The only chance is if Hillary Clinton kicks ass and takes names from day one. The Republicans are running scared already.
JP
Yonk, you're once again right on the money. I have seen Romney as the next presidential candidatge as clearly as I see Monday following Sunday. He has the money, the name recognition and the beliefe that he is the best. What a hurt he will put on this country if he pulls it off.
I would caution any Democrat who believes Hillary is a shoo in for 2016.
Yes, I believe she will grab the nomination if she wants it (if I am to be fair, however, I also believed that in 2008), but by that time the media blitz on her character will have been completely entrenched in the minds of many swing voters.
A colleague of mine states confidently (referring to the switching demographics in the nation) that "There will never be another Republican president in my lifetime"...in my opine, a very naive' and dangerous belief..as it breeds overconfidence.
Let us not believe for one minute that the surge of Hispanic and African American voters who came out in droves for Obama will do so again in such high numbers in 2016.MY belief is that perhaps their main reason was to elect a candidate they perceive as reflecting their own values...an African American, and this led to the huge turnouts in '08 and '12.
And as for the youth vote....more and more (and I do not wish to sound like a mean old man here) of these kids are hypnotized by their I phones and, at least to me, seem more self absorbed and disaffected by what is going on in the world than any generation in history.
In short, look for a possible 50%-49% popular vote ratio result in 2016....I doubt we will see a landslide popular vote for many years...if ever.
Bless You.
