AN OPEN LETTER TO VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS
09/13/2024
Dear Madame Vice President:
Thank you for coming to Wilkes-Barre to visit with your supporters. Your candidacy is important to our region because you understand the middle class and the needs of others on the way up the ladder of success.
Through the years Luzerne County has been the beneficiary of help from the government that were championed by Democratic policies. The VA Hospital, the rebuilding of the county after the 1972 flood, the number of people who have social security and route 81 were championed by Democrats. Even the Arena your opponent has rallies in was shepherded by two great Democrats, the late Robert Casey and Representative Kevin Blaum.
Just an FYI, today there will, be protestors who will say you aren’t welcome here. some of these MAGA members are ingrates who forgot where they came from. Others are retirees who have union pensions and have the philosophy of “I got mine, now you can’t have yours".
These loudmouths are not representative of our region. Please understand that. I respect their right to protest, what I don’t respect is the way they will disrespect the second highest office in the land.
Additionally know that for every vote they give to your opponent, our Democrats and Independents are going to get you and Governor Walz three to counter the lack of logic and in some cases, not all, devotion to a cult.
Welcome and God speed.

HARRIS WON THE DEBATE
A snap poll has revealed the state of the presidential race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in the immediate aftermath of the debate on Tuesday night.
According to a CNN flash poll conducted by SSRS, 63 percent of registered voters who tuned in to the ABC News debate believe that Harris “won” the debate.
This is nearly double (37 percent) the voters who believed that Trump was the winner.
The snap poll shows that Harris was able to make a positive impression on voters, who felt better understood by the Democrat after the debate.
Post-debate, 44 percent said Harris better understands the problems facing regular Americans today, while 40 percent backed Trump.
This is a changeup from before the debate, when 43 percent of voters felt that Trump was more in touch with their problems, compared to 39 percent for Harris.
Harris’s favorability also rose after the debate, with 45 percent saying they view her favorably compared to 39 percent before the two candidates took to the stage. However, a significant 44 percent of registered voters said they view her unfavorably in the aftermath of the debate.
By contrast, voters’ opinions of
Trump were largely unchanged, with 39 percent rating him favorably and 51
percent unfavorably. (CNN)

THIS WEEK IN MAGA NEWS
Benny Herring and his group, Citizens Advisory of Pennsylvania, are pressuring the Berwick School Board to ban Pride flags at their meeting yesterday. These flags symbolize diversity, acceptance, and unity for the LGBTQ+ community, and removing them would send the wrong message to students who need support.
Herring’s group has a troubling history of promoting anti-LGBTQ agendas. His recent appointment to the Luzerne County Ethics Commission has also sparked concerns, given that dozens of complaints about his homophobic social media posts were ignored by the County Council. Allowing someone with such divisive views to influence community decisions is dangerous and undermines values of fairness and equality. Attached is a story on the School Board meeting from last night, and some examples of Herring's bigoted posts.

ROBBIE’S TONE DEAF TV AD
STARRING
MAUREEN!
Republican candidate in the 8th Congressional District Rob Bresnahan has a tone deaf advertising agency,
The latest evidence of this was our introduction to Maureen from Pittston who boo hooed about the high cost of groceries dub to inflation. Naturally the GOP playbook is to blame Matt Cartwright for the high inflation set upon us by corporate greed.
Maureen is seen looking in dismay at the grocery aisle and looks nothing like the hard working Pittston moms I knew in my childhood and know now. She is seen unloading the groceries from a late model car and over her shoulder looks to be a very large well kept big house.
I get it. People who seem to be doing well also are impacted by inflation which has gone down consistently the last few years. I bet Cartwright NEVER got credit for that.
But was it illness, care of an aging parent, money set aside for medicine for her family? NOPE.
None of the above.
Her complaint was that the family had to cut back on exotic vacations.
How tone deaf can you get!
There are LAST thing on their bitch list
of 8th District voters are less exotic Vacations. But I leave you with my dad’s favorite song, he who
never had the luxury of any vacation let alone an exotic one.My guess is that Robbie has nailed down the problem most voters in the 8th which is the crisis in the diminution of "exotic Vacations".
CARTWRIGHT DOES IT AGAIN!
NEW BUILDING TO BENEFIT MOOSIC POLICE, FIRE DEPARTMENTS
An emergency services building set to open in September 2025 will provide a permanent home for the borough's Police Department and safer access for its Fire Department.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday behind the existing Greenwood Hose Co. 1 firehouse on Birney Avenue, where the new, approximately 18,000-square-foot facility will be built. The old building will be demolished upon completion of the new one.
The approximately $5.7 million cost of the project is being financed through state, local and private grants, including $3 million in Community Project Funding secured by U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic.
"One of the ways we accomplish safety in our community is having adequately staffed and equipped emergency and first-response services," Cartwright said.
The new building will allow firefighters to safely maneuver their vehicles into the station without dealing with speeding traffic on Birney Avenue. It also will accommodate larger, modern fire apparatus and have additional indoor storage space for equipment.
Earl Thomas, president and COO of Tunkhannock-based Milnes Engineering, noted on-site work is expected to start next month and continue for about a year.
Matt Marsh, a sergeant with Excelsior Hose Co. 2 in Duryea, believes the new home for the Moosic Fire Department will also be a positive for neighboring municipalities.
"It's beneficial for us because we work really well with our mutual aid companies," he said. "Greenwood has been really crucial for our infrastructure down in town. They're more centralized in the town so they can respond to any area quicker — Old Forge, Taylor, Duryea, Avoca."
Moosic Mayor Robert Bennie credited the collaboration between the police and fire departments for making the new building possible.
CASEY INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO COMBAT CHINA’S RISING ECONOMIC AGGRESSION, BOOST AMERICAN MARKET COMPETITIVENESS, CRACK DOWN ON TRADE CHEATING
COMBAT CHINESE ECONOMIC AGGRESSION ACT WILL PROTECT U.S. TECHNOLOGY AND MANUFACTURING BY CRACKING DOWN ON TRADE CHEATING AND INVESTMENTS IN AND FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES OF CONCERN
CASEY LEGISLATION TO STRENGTHEN U.S. ECONOMIC AND NATIONAL SECURITY AGAINST EVOLVING THREATS FROM CHINA
CASEY: “THE CHOICE IS OURS: WE CAN TAKE CONTROL OF OUR OWN FUTURE OR WE CAN LET CHINA EAT OUR LUNCH”
U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) introduced legislation to strengthen American competitiveness in the global economy, crack down on trade cheating, and protect against economic and cybersecurity threats from China. The Combat Chinese Economic Aggression Act will strengthen U.S. manufacturing and technology by pushing back against China and other countries of concern that seek to steal trade secrets and exert influence over American defense, manufacturing, infrastructure, telecommunications, and energy industries. Included in this legislation are five bills: the American Industry and Technology Protection Act, Disclosing Investments in Foreign Adversaries Act, Stop Investing in Chinese Innovation and Aggression Act; Market Economy Sourcing Act, and Secure Smartports Act.
“China’s rising economic aggression will put our security, workers, and communities at risk if we don’t fight back. My bills will help to level the playing field for American workers and crack down on trade cheating and dangerous investments in Chinese markets,” said Senator Casey. “The choice is ours: we can take control of our own future or we can let China eat our lunch.”
Senator Casey has led the charge in Congress to protect against threats to U.S. economic and national security from China and other countries of concern including Iran, North Korea, and Russia. Casey has pressed the Biden Administration to keep tariffs on Chinese imports, crack down on unfair Chinese trade practices, and prioritize American made products. Additionally, Senator Casey has led bipartisan efforts to raise alarms about SHEIN, a Chinese corporation allegedly utilizing forced labor. Casey championed provisions in the Intelligence Authorization Act to stop fentanyl at the border, prevent Chinese cyberattacks, and thwart Chinese efforts to evade U.S. regulations.
In June 2023, Senator Casey delivered a rousing speech to union workers and business leaders in Pittsburgh to outline his vision for the United States to take control of its economic future by investing in American workers and manufacturing, as well as stopping investments in national security sectors from going to countries of concern, including China. He has led bipartisan legislation to give the U.S. insight into these investments, which passed the Senate as amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) by a vote of 91-6 in July 2023, but House Republican leadership ultimately dropped Casey’s bill from the final NDAA legislation. At the same time, Casey pushed the Biden Administration to take executive action to screen outbound investments in critical sectors in countries of concern. The Department of Treasury announced the proposed rule in June.
The American Industry and Technology Protection Act will help the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States (CFIUS) to more rapidly crack down on evolving Chinese threats to the U.S. market economy. The legislation would expand CFIUS’ authority, allowing the Committee to review all transactions from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in emerging critical technologies. Additionally, this bill will help CFIUS identify and mitigate transactions that would impair the economic and technological competitiveness of the United States in foundational industries such as steelmaking, petrochemicals, and energy technology.
The Disclosing Investments in Foreign Adversaries Act will enable Americans to know where their savings are invested and inform U.S. lawmakers about the extent of our financial exposure to China. This legislation would provide transparency into individual funds’ investments in China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea by requiring: private funds to annually disclose assets invested in each country of concern; an annual publicly available report containing a list of entities ant their assets in each country of concern; mutual funds and exchange-traded funds to publicly disclose percentage of funds’ net assets allocated in countries of concern; and companies issuing securities in U.S. markets to disclose the beneficial owners of the issuer, intended use of the proceeds, and the countries and sectors where the proceeds would be invested.
The Stop Investing in Chinese Innovation and Aggression Act will protect U.S. national and economic security by limiting outsourcing and direct investments in foreign countries of concern, particularly China. This legislation would safeguard U.S. manufacturing, innovation, and security by establishing a program to prohibit U.S. firms from making investments in technologies in countries of concern and requiring U.S. entities, including corporations, to notify the Department of Treasury of certain investments and activities in countries of concern.
The Market Economy Sourcing Act will establish a limit on the amount of content that can come from non-market economies (NME), shifting dependence away from NMEs, like China. At present, half of a product’s content under existing rules of origin can come from countries outside of those participating in a trade agreement. This means a significant share of content for goods receiving preferential market access under a trade agreement can come from non-market economies including China. The Market Economy Sourcing Act would shut a backdoor to our economy. During the first five-year period following entry into force of a free trade agreement, no more than 20 percent of the “remainder” of content, that is, content not covered by the rule of origin, in qualifying goods may originate from non-market economies, and no more than ten percent thereafter. After five years, 90 percent of the remainder content in qualifying goods, or 95 percent of total content, on average, must come from market economies. With respect to critical supply chains and capacities, no content from non-market economies and foreign adversaries would be allowed following this phase-out period.
The Secure Smartports Act will direct the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) to alert the U.S. port and shipping industry to the threat of PRC-backed shipping and logistics infrastructure, technology, and software to U.S. supply chains to help protect against them. As the agency whose mission is to “provide counterintelligence outreach to U.S. private sector entities at risk of foreign intelligence penetration,” it’s critical to U.S. national and economic security that NCSC work with ports and shipping companies to understand the risks of using Chinese technology.

City Controller Tony Thomas with the Governor.Governor Josh Shapiro visited SMART Sheet Metal Workers Local 44 in Luzerne County to highlight how investments in workforce development, job training, apprenticeship programs, and vo-tech included in the bipartisan budget he signed into law this year are giving Pennsylvanians the freedom to chart their own course and opportunity to succeed.
Thanks to a grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), Local 44 is in the process of upgrading its training center to provide state-of-the-art technology and training for apprentices in high-need fields like HVAC, metal roofing, kitchen exhaust hoods, and air balancing.
SMART currently has 32 active apprentices, all of whom are benefitting from the earn-as-you-learn model that the U.S. Department of Labor says puts them on track to earn an estimated $300,000 more over their careers compared to workers who don't graduate from an apprenticeship program.
"I am committed to delivering results for the good people of Pennsylvania - tackling our most urgent challenges and bringing Democrats and Republicans together to get things done," said Governor Shapiro. "I'm proud of the historic investments we've made in job training, apprenticeship programs, and career and technical education because these initiatives create pathways to economic opportunity and give Pennsylvanians the freedom to chart their own course. My Administration values skills and experience, recognizing that everyone's journey is unique, and ensuring that every Pennsylvanian has the chance to succeed."
