The LuLac Edition #1005, Nov. 13th, 2009

PHOTO INDEX: 13 QUESTIONS LOGO.

13 QUESTIONS

1. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE ’09 LOCAL ELECTIONS?

AS I SAID ON WYLN TV ELECTION NIGHT AND ON SUE HENRY’S SHOW, IT WAS A SPLIT DECISION. I THINK THE DEMOCRATS SHOWED THEIR REGISTRATION SUPERIORITY IN WINNING THE TWO JUDGESHIPS. HOWEVER THAT SAID, THEY HAD TWO CANDIDATES THAT HAD STRONG, FANATICAL BASIS OF SUPPORT. DICK HUGHES WAS ONLY BEHIND BY 5,000 VOTES AND IF HIS FOOT SOLDIERS IN THE TRENCHES WERE AS NUMEROUS AND STRONG AS THE DEMS REGULARS AND HE WAS RUNNING AGAINST LESS CHARISMATIC CANDIDATES, HE MIGHT HAVE WON. THE GOP AFTER NARROWING LOSING TWO ROW OFFICES IN ’07 REBOUNDED AND WON BACK TWO. THINK ABOUT THIS THOUGH, IF MARY DYSLESKI AND BARRY STANKUS HAD RETAINED THOSE OFFICES IN 07, THE GOP WOULD HAVE 4 ROW OFFICES RIGHT NOW. SO AGAIN IT WAS A “SPLIT DECISION” FOR BOTH PARTIES. IF I HAD TO GIVE A SLIGHT EDGE TO IT THOUGH, I’D SAY IT WAS ONE FOR THE GOP BECAUSE THE DEMS WITH THEIR REGISTRATION SHOULD’VE TAKEN SOME ACTION IN THE PROTHONOTARY’S RACE WHEN THINGS CHANGED IN THE SUMMER REGARDING THE BELLAS FAMILY AND TRIED TO MAKE SOME KIND OF ACCOMMODATION WITH WIL TOOLE. IN THE OLD DAYS OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, THAT WOULD’VE HAPPENED.

2. DO YOU THINK CHRIS DOHERTY HAS A CHANCE IN THE 2010 RACE FOR GOVERNOR?

I DO. HERE’S WHY, YOU HAVE TWO WESTERN CANDIDATES, ONORATO AND WAGNER. THEY’LL SPLIT THAT VOTE. YOU HAVE TWO PHILADELPHIA AREA DEMOCRATS, HOEFFEL AND KNOX. THEY WILL SPLIT UP THAT AREA. DOHERTY WITH A LITTLE MONEY CAN CARRY HIS REGION AND THE CENTRAL PART OF THE STATE. HIS CAMPAIGN TEAM CAN WEAVE A PICTURE OF SCRANTON AS A CITY OF GROWTH. AND TRUTH BE TOLD ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS SHOW PICTURES OF THE DOWNTOWN BEFORE DOHERTY AND POST DOHERTY. I’D SEND HIS WIFE WITH HER “POCKETBOOK” TO EVERY SENIOR CENTER IN THE STATE, I’D RECRUIT A FEW OF HIS OLDER KIDS TO GO ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES AND THINK UP A STRATEGY THAT WILL SET HIM APART IDEOLOGICALLY FROM THE OTHER FOUR. DOHERTY SEEMS TO HAVE NO GREAT STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE STATE SO EVERYTHING IS PRETTY MUCH OPEN FOR INTERPRETATION. HE DOES HAVE A CHANCE.

3. ARE YOU OFFENDED BY THE CHRIS FARLEY AD FOR DIRECT TV WITH DAVID SPAIDE?

NOT AT ALL. I THINK IT BRINGS BACK TO LIFE FARLEY WHO FOR A SHORT TIME WAS HILARIOUS AND CELEBRATES HIS COMEDY. I MEAN IF HERSHEY COULD BRING BACK THE STOOGES WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL.

4. THOUGHTS ON PETER PAUL OLSZEWSKI JUNIOR’S REJECTION AT THE POLLS?

TERRIBLE COLLATERAL DAMAGE. I THINK HE GOT A RAW DEAL FROM THE SHAMROCK PAPERS WHEN THEY PUBLISHED THAT PHOTO WITHOUT ATTRIBUTION. MY FEELING IS THAT WE LOST A GOOD JUDICIAL MIND WHO WAS COMMITTED TO PUBLIC SERVICE. THE COURT WITH MANY NEW JUDGES WILL BE CLEANSED AND THAT’S A GOOD THING. BUT THE DOWNSIDE TO THAT WILL BE THERE NEEDS TO BE SOME EXPERIENCE ON THE BENCH AND WITH HIS LOSS WE’RE JUST TOSSING THAT OUT THE WINDOW.

5. TINA FEY OR SARAH PALIN?

TINA FEY BECAUSE I THINK THERE’S DEFINITELY SOMEBODY AT HOME UNDER THAT HAIR AND GLASSES.

6. HOW MANY PEOPLE, AFTER ALL IS SAID AND DONE WILL BE CHARGED IN THE LUZERNE COUNTY SCANDALS?

I’M PICKING A RANDOM NUMBER OF 50.

7. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT STEVE CORBETT’S PHONE CALL TO THE JUDGE THAT MIGHT BE INDICTED AND THE REACTION HE GOT FROM THE JUDGE’S OFFICE STAFF?

LET ME SET THIS UP FOR MY READERS. CORBETT SAID HE CALLED THE OFFICE OF A LUZERNE COUNTY JUDGE WHO WAS LONG RUMORED TO BE UNDER INVESTIGATION. WHEN HE ASKED A QUESTION OF THE STAFFER THEY LAUGHED AT HIM. SOMETIMES THE STAFF A PERSON HIRES DOES NOT SERVE THAT PUBLIC OFFICIAL WELL. THAT’S BECAUSE THEY ARE HACKS TO BEGIN WITH, INEXPERIENCED IN DEALING WITH THE PRESS AND ILL EQUIPPED TO HANDLE ADVERSITY. THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN IN POLITICS EITHER, IT HAPPENS IN PRIVATE BUSINESS. LAST WEEK I ENCOUNTERED A SITUATION FROM ONE OF MY FORMER EMPLOYERS THAT STILL HAS ME SCRATCHING MY HEAD. SOMETIMES WELL MEANING BUT UNINFORMED AND UNEDUCATED STAFFERS ARE THEIR BOSSES OR COMPANY’S WORST ENEMIES.

8. YOU HAD A FEW PEOPLE WRITING YOUR NAME IN FOR JURY COMMISSIONER, WHAT OFFICE WOULD YOU WRITE IN GORT 42’s NAME IN FOR?

GORT WOULD MAKE AN EXCELLENT COUNTY TREASURER IF MIKE MORREALE EVER RETIRES. AND IF NOT THAT, I’D TRY TO GET GORT AS COMMISSIONER OF THE NCAA FOOTBALL SO THAT HE COULD ADD SOME COMMON SENSE TO THIS BCS NONSENSE.

9. WILL OBAMA’S HEALTH CARE PLAN PASS?

NOT THE WAY HE OR TEDDY KENNEDY WANTED. ONE THING PEOPLE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND IS THAT THE GOVERNMENT DOESN’T ADMINISTER AND WILL NOT ADMINISTER HEALTH CARE. THERE WILL BE A THIRD PARTY FISCAL INTERMEDIARY LIKE BLUE CROSS OF NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA IS FOR THE MEDICARE PROGRAM AS WELL AS THE HEALTH CARE PLANS FOR FEDERAL WORKERS. THE BIG STICKING POINT POLITICALLY IS GOING TO BE THE ABORTION ISSUE. THIS MIGHT BECOME SO POLITICALLY CONVOLUTED THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE THE LIBERAL BASE THAT WANTED HEALTH CARE REFORM IN THE FIRST PLACE VOTING AGAINST THIS BECAUSE OF PRESSURE FROM WOMEN’S GROUPS ANGRY WITH THE STUPAK AMENDMENT. IT IS GOING TO BE A BUMPY ROAD AND AFTER ALL IS SAID AND DONE, NO ONE WILL BE THRILLED WITH THE OUTCOME.

10. FORMER JUDGE MARK CIAVARELLA WAS SEEN GROCERY SHOPPING IN A LOCAL STORE LAST WEEK. IF YOU ENCOUNTERED HIM WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO HIM?

I’D ASK HIM IF HE WANTED TO SAY ANYTHING TO MY READERS AND IF HE DECLINED, I’D ASK HIM HOW HE WAS DOING AND WHAT WAS HE DOING WITH HIS FREE TIME.

11. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE TESTIMONY OF FORMER D.A. AND CURRENT JUDGE DAVID LUPUS BEFORE THE COMMITTEE AT EAST MOUNTAIN INN?

LUPUS SAID HE HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE TWO JUDGES WERE DOING WHEN HE WAS DA AND GIVEN THE TENTACLES OF THE DA’S OFFICE AS WELL AS THE PURE GOSSIP THAT GOES ON IN POLITICS, I FIND WHAT HE SAID HARD TO BELIEVE.

12. FAVORITE LOCAL WEATHER PERSON?

C’MON, WHO’D YA THINK?

13. YOU’RE A CLOTHES GUY, IS A DESIGNER SUIT WORTH GOING TO JAIL FOR?

NOPE. HERE’S MY TAKE ON DESIGNER CLOTHES. IF YOU FIND A DESIGNER/COMPANY THAT FITS YOUR TASTE AND STYLE, PAY THE EXTRA MONEY FOR IT BUT DO SO WITH ITEMS THAT ACCESSORIZE YOUR OTHER CLOTHES. I PURCHASE CLOTHS FROM POLO.COM AND THE THINGS I LIKE ABOUT THEM IS THEY LAST FOREVER, ARE ALWAYS IN STYLE AND ARE SO COMFORTABLE YOU CAN SLEEP IN THEM. I ONCE BOUGHT A PAIR OF DESIGNER SLACKS FROM DONNA KARAN. LOVE HER SHIRTS AND TIES BUT TO THIS DAY, THOSE PANTS DO NOT FIT MY BODY THE RIGHT WAY. THE POCKETS ARE OUT OF ALIGNMENT, THE BELT LOOPS ARE TOO NARROW, THE PLEATS ARE TOO DEEP AND THE FABRIC IS FLIMSY. BUYING EXPENSIVE SOMETIMES IS NOT BUYING SMART. PAYING TOO MUCH IS DUMB, TAKING A BRIBE FOR A DESIGNER SUIT IS JUST PLAIN NUTS.

Guys like you and I dont have the
bodies for designer clothes. Now Brace, thats another story. I figure if the guy sold out for a suit, its only the tip of the iceberg. I bet he got free candy and movie tickets too along with a set of recap tires and deluxe floormats for his car.

First of all I think that the Government Study Commission will eliminate Treasurer as an elected position and hopefully the new charter will be ratified. I don't want that job or Commissioner of the NCAA. The comish of the NCAA is an administrator that is in charge of rule enforcement but doesn't set policy like the commissioners of the NFL or MLB. The real powers in college football are the University Presidents. Their schools are raking millions under the present system so they are not inclined to change it. I would love to see a playoff system but it will not happen for a while.

And just to tie it together Morrreale said in his last campaign that he would retire after Joe Paterno did.

How stupid am I today? Here I thought the Yonk's favorite weather guy was Snedecker because they share a birthday. But no, it's Christi Kapel from WBRE.

Yonk, You consider PPO as a loss of an experienced judge? Not for nothing but what the hell does his or any other judge's experience have to do with the new judges? Does a new judge get to leave the bench, walk over to the old experienced judge and ask advice? PPO is gone and that's a good thing. I for one won't miss his ego in the halls of the Dome.

Hey 3:18: The body's okay but WTF on that hair. Love ya Dr. Joe but you ain't no Beachboy or guy with curly bleach blond hair in a Jimmy Buffet video. All that said, the good doc should be commended for his eloquence on the subject of childhood obesity.

I believe Walter Griffith will step down. I believe he wants the committee to go forward. He has concerns because of the political biting and aggressive e-mails from fellow committee members. I feel the members of this committee have their own agendas and are not truthful about their intentions.

I believe it is important for a true representation of the whole population of this county. It is difficult to have representation from Southern Luzerne County because of the population. We have an increase in population and many are illegal citizens.

I am looking for strong government.
I am looking for direct answers.

Why is everyone so evasive?

The break up of Ma Bell was a bad thing? Are you ****ing crazy????? Long distance calls in those days had to be done after ****ing midnight becuase it was so Goddam expensive. The best thing that ever happened for teleophany was dereguation. It spurred much cheaper phone rates, you were able to choose what you wanted on your phone line and no longer had to lease a ****ing black phone with a ****ing annoying ring, and much more rapid advancement of technology.

Hey 7:11 you hit it on the money, but the doc is letting the blond grow out.. Read it in the inteview the Yonk did with him. Though I think he looks hot either way! I'd like to **** him in a three way.

All of the comments on Dr. Leonardi's appearance are great. However, what is getting lost is the incredibly gifted writer he is and the following is the best words he has ever put on paper. I ran in to Dr. Leonardi at a fundraiser for the subject of 1 of his columns. Mr. Yonki could you post a link to this story? Everyone who has doubts in what they can accomplish should read this.

Thank you,

Fan of Steph's

Hey Fan of Steph's...BFD. Nice little artcle but there are thousands of gifted writers in the area not employed in that field because they can't get a break. And let's not even mention the people with Masters degrees that are waiting tables and working as shop girls at the GAP in the Mall.

Hey Anon 2:48, what is with the hostility? What would justify your comment, shrouded in COWARDLY ANONYMITY, "BFD," about, of all things, that particular column? If your anger is directed at me, then call my office and talk to me, I don't hide.

Just so you know, because obviously you decided to spout off without taking any time to gather a single fact, I do NOT get paid to write those columns. They are "Guest Editorials" that I take the time to put together because I desire to write about the good things in NEPA. I write becuase of my love of this area and the people who make it up. I grew up reading the Sunday Dispatch and enjoy the homey feel of the paper, so I write these type of, what are intended to be, uplifting and postive columns, submit them and the editors sometimes publish them and sometimes don't.

I wrote that column because on that particular day I was looking for an excuse not to workout, something that was a key to my shedding 100++ pounds and remains a key to maintaing and improving my current fitness level. I discovered that my own lame excuses for not wanting do something were down right embarassing. I learned that in a world full of those complaining about what they can not do, there are those who may have reasons not to do something, but still go out and do it anyway.

I have been seasoned by military service, advanced education, many career/personal failures and successes, yet I learned a lesson that day and I wanted to convey my observations to others who believe their situation may be bleak.

About nine months ago I wrote a follow up. I have edited and submitted it several times since I wrote it, but for whatever reason it has not been published. That is their decision. So, I posted it on my blog: www.FatThenFitNow.wordpress.com

I am really very suprised that someone would take anything about my column, "Inspiration," and try to turn it into a negative.
I have to wonder about those who look down on honest, hard work and think they are better and such other work is beneath them because of an education.
However, that is one's perogitive, so c'est la vie. I will continue to take my lesson learned and continue to strive to accomplish when others find excuses not to.

Why so defensive Doctor? You might have become a Democrat but you are exhibiting Nixonian paranoia. If I read the criticism correctly, the person said your article was very nice. The comment that there are other writers with talent, like yourself getting unpaid in this area and some working at low wage jobs with a lot of education is what the person was trying to say. Perhaps with all the weight you lost, your ass has tightened up. Lighten up man, the poster didn't attack you or the young lady you so eloquently wrote about, he attacked this horrible caste system of nepotism in NEPA where guys like you and others who have played by the rules can't get a fair shake.

This blog is incredible. You never know when something is going to take off. 7:32PM, I agree with your assessment. Even though Yonki is a little too heavy on the edit key for my tastes, he does allow anonymous comments. And for the most part, those comments are pretty good. A lot of the anonymous comments are geared toward people who put themselves out there, namely Dave and at times the good Doctor L. Although I think Dr. Joe is great on TV, maybe he overeacted a little to the post from 2:34PM. All I saw in it was BFD and apparently that was enough to get the Doctor going. A lot of energy for nothing man. Chill. (Although I did love your retort).
