The LuLac Edition #1529, April 1st, 2011

PHOTO INDEX: THE BELOVED SOUP NAZI AND OUR SAD AND CONFUSED DONKEY LOGO.

NO SOUP FOR YOU!

Well it’s not exactly no soup but no endorsements for the Democratic candidates running for Luzerne County Council. Last night the party of Martin L. Murray, Bob Loftus and Joe Tirpak (men who regularly handpicked candidates to run and had a political farm system that equaled Branch Rickey’s) picked no one. A wise man once told me you aren’t required by law to offer an opinion or make a decision. But the Democrats are taking this to the extreme. Here’ the hysterical part: 80% of the Committee people did not endorse because they didn’t know enough about the candidates. Some people said they didn’t really know the candidates. SHAME ON THEM! They don’t know Wil Toole who is at every Commissioner’s meeting and who ran local and national campaign’s in the 80s and 90s? They don’t know Jim Bobeck who is on the freaking Home Rule Transition Committee? They don’t know Casey Evans who worked for the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2008? They don’t know Harry Skene who ran for Judge? They don’t know Eileen Sorokas who was a State Committee woman? They don’t know former County Commissioner Ed Brominski? They don’t know Elaine Maddon Curry who has been the arch enemy of Rick Morelli, the guy running on the Republican side? They don’t know Michelle Bednar, an elected official? They don’t know Mario Fiorucci who has been a pain in the backside to party leaders in Sugar Notch? They don’t know any of these people? What a crock. The Democratic party took this action for a few reasons.
1. There is no big money in these salaries. So no one in “the family” wants the jobs. Better to wait until the FBI blows out of town and then get Clarence Junior that job as Deputy to the Deputy Hall Monitor in a school district for $125,000 a year. The Study Commission kind of screwed the politicos with those $8,000 a year salaries.
2. The Democratic party committee is essentially lazy and has no intellectual curiosity about anyone in their party. Even the fringe candidates bearing the Democratic label that might embarrass the party.
3. The party really wants the new form of Government to fail so they can say “I told you so”.
4. The Democratic party knows it has no juice whatsoever after Walter Griffith and Carolee Medico took out scandal plagued incumbents. And let’s not forget Gina Nevenglosky who nearly put Dottie Stankovic out to pasture.
5. The Democratic party thinks there are too many candidates, too confusing, messy.
6. The Democrats won’t endorse anyone because a former party official now running for an office is scared to death his own party will shun him.
7. The Democratic party in this area has always been strong because they could separate the good candidates from the screwball candidates. By not endorsing, the party is letting the floodgates open to obstructionist candidates that only use one mantra, “I’m going to watch your taxes”. How? When? How does one watch taxes?
The party said they were going to reconvene and have the Council candidates present again but that is only going to be for the sole benefit of the District Chairs if they want to endorse. So the Dems abdicated their responsibility. Because of that, you’ll see each and every candidate “bullet vote” for themselves. You’ll see not the best people elected but a conglomeration of people elected by luck, selfishness, disinterest and worse yet, ignorance. Will Rogers once said, “I belong to no organized political party, I’m a Democrat”. These guys in Luzerne County Leadership don’t even have the organized part going for them. As you read this and you feel the earth tremor under your feet, have no fear, it’s just Murray and Tirpak spinning in their graves.

Anyone notice that Rep. Marino apparently doesn't know that Libya is in Africa? I guess he's from the Sarah Palin-Michelle Bachmann end of the party's scholarship.

bravo! Bravo!
While the party may say that they want an "open forum", it's simply a cop-out.

If you can't make some tough choices as party leaders, then you're NOT A LEADER!

And if you can't build a party consenus and fully take advantage of a heavily lopsided D registration in the county, then you just might be clueless.

The Democratic party in Luzerne County is a shell of its former self. The purpose of a party is to promote growth. In the old days there was a system of apprenticeship. I'm not suggesting a return to those days but what I am saying is that by the party not endorsing, it is not only not leading the voters but not leading the committee people. It's almost like a manager telling his starting 9, "go wherever you want" and will see if we win that way. THe biggest joke is that the hapless GOP won't be able to take advantage of this fiasco.

The party endorsement is not what it used to be. It has as Yonk indicated no juice anymore. The wo greatest examples statewide are Ed Rendell and Joe Sestak who beat the endorsees. Look at the last Judgerace, Amesbury won on his own organization and with the help of the 6th district party, Gartley won with old fashioned shoe leather and a smart campaign. I mean she ran her campaign like a mom sticking to a budget. Meanwhile Joe Musto and Tommy O'Connor who should have had total support from the party didn't. O'Connor because his experience was lost among an influx of wannabees and Musto because no one had "the juice" in the 3rd fistrict to have 5 candidates coming out of Pittston! This is not planning a prom night from Sem or GAR at Genetti's, this is real life.

We need less lawyers and more shoe salesmen as party bosses.

The sad thing is that all of the candidates Yonki mentioned (Toole, Bobeck, Evans, Skene, Sorokas, Brominski, Curry, Bednar, Fiorucci) are some of the most qualified and heavyweight names out of the 30 some odd democrat candidates and the party isnt backing them. All of them, with McGinley included, are the best of the best and they were rogered and screwed.

Some predictions now that the districts themselves are gonna do the backing for the ones Yonki mentioned and a few others. Id put money down that;

Toole will score his highest in Pittston, maybe Nanticoke.
Bobeck will come out strongest in Kingson, and do well in WilkesBarre but he has to step up his campaign.
Evans will dominate the back mountain and probably come in number 2 or 3 in the Pittston Area.
Skene and Sorokas are the wild cards... they could do well anywhere.
Brominski's star is centered on WilkesBarre and
Curry will landslide her opposition in Hazleton and probably do well up in Nanticoke.
Bednar will be number 2 or 3 in Hazleton and grab Ashley, Sugar Notch, and do well in Mountaintop.
Fiorucci will be the top candidate in Pittson and everyone with him will ride in on his coat tails.
Some more areas that might back certain guys;
dupont/Duryea: Toole, Evans, Sorokas, Brominski
"Plymmit"/larksville: Curry, Bednar, Bobeck, maybe Evans (and thats a big maybe but he's Jerry Mullery's guy there)
Drums & Butler: Curry, Sorokas, Bednar
Harveys lake: Rovinski and Evans will take it, Bobeck should do well.
"Everywhere else": Giamber will probably carry Ross and grab a few votes up in Kingston from Haggerty supporters. He might also be number one for Sweet Valley.

On the gop side, Morelli will be the top name, and Ruckno and Rossi will end up in the number 2 and 3 spots. the rest is anyone's game.

just a few thoughts from an observer of the animals at the political zoo.

I have to agree with 12:29 on Rovinski and Evans. I live in Lake Twp. and Rovinski is a well respected man here, and he has a reputation of being a good, solid, honest and well liked person. As for Mr. Evans, he will also do well, as his family is very well known in the Back Mountain through their businesses and they're pushing him really hard. I wouldn't count Giamber out, because he's Sweet Valley's hometown hero for the Home Rule Charter, but he has to develop better social skills to fend off perceptions of being aloof.

Rovinski's strength comes from Dallas and the Misericordia-centered crowd. Evans is perceived here as a Hillary Clinton protege, and will lock the "Clinton Democrats" to his side. Giamber is going to seal up the people who were very much in favor of home rule. All three men have the homefield advantage here.

We live in interesting times indeed!

I've said it before and I will say it again; excuse the crass language, but this is a cluster ****! To all those who voted for this fiasco get ready for a disaster. Unfortunately all of us will have to suffer for a vote out of anger instead of common sense.
Zoo will be an understatement.

The only reason these candidates are on the Democtat ticket is because we have a two party system. The Democrat leadership is and has been a joke since Terpak and Jimmy Bach stepped down. Look at what we have and their experience. When was the last time you saw the Democrats have a registration drive? How many years (days) has the new Chair, Kathy Kane served the Party in any respect? Was she an active committee member? Has she ever been active in Party politics? The only reason ane is Party Chair is because people are hoping that she will listen to her husband Marty. Now he's a real party leader. Too bad he is a magistrate and can't be involved. It is also too bad that I hear Kathy tries to be independent of Marty and demands respect on her own accomplsihments. Problem is that Kathy Kane has no accomlishments. She had a chance to be a good leader and she should have had her entire committee interview all of the candidates and then ENDOSED. It isn't too late but its close to being too late.

The republicans are not endorsing either. Probably smart move on both sides. There are a lot of crap candidates on both sides. Best for the committees to stay out of the primary and work hard in the general election

Excuse me but Steve Urban has absolutely no right to even be cnsidered a Democrat. He is Republican thru and thru. He doesn't have a Liberal bone in his body nor does he have a fair bone in his body. If the truth be known, he is an absolutle Meocrat! It is all about him and no one or no thing other than Steve Urban matters to him. Can anyone spell political bum? Easy, S-t-e-v-e U-r-b-a-n ........ Class dismissed!

The current District chairs are a joke. Evans is a Me,me,me man, Jim Haddock in the Third District is not even a resident he lives in the 7th District and should have been booted by Buffalino. Now its up to Kane to Rid the party of oafs like him. The Fifth District Chair Bob Boyer is a nice guy but no leader. Sal Alaimo in the 7Th District rarely knows what day it is or is just around for free meals. The First District with Fay and the boys could not keep Eachus afloat. What a sorry state of affairs are the dems in. Kane nominates Lee Namey as her vice chair and ignores other districts. Believe me it wont sit well with Pipech and the Mountaintop Clan.
