INTERVIEW

Once more Labor Day is signaling the end of another summer. People will be hearing up for the fall and then heading into Christmas. I spoke this week with a seasonal worker. This past summer he worked at a restaurant in the Poconos.
Q: So what’s your fall gig?
A: I work as an aide in a class room for a charter school. That’s during the day. At night over the weekend I do some bar tending. So I babysit little kids during the day and bigger kids in the bars.
Q: Which one is better to handle?
A: It’s a tie, there isn’t anything appealing about a screaming little girl who doesn’t get her way. And there’s nothing more pathetic than a drunk 21 year old girl either.
Q: And when Christmas comes?
A: I do the Santa thing. I put an ad in the paper, got a suit, go to parties , offices, fill in at the Malls.
Q: Why do you have so many jobs?
A: I need to eat man, put some petrol in my car.
Q: How long has it been since you had one job?
A: About 4 years. The last time was ’07. I got laid off from the company and collected. But I really couldn’t sit home and waste away. So the girl friend suggested I be a career part time job holder.
Q: Was she pleased you took her advice?
A: Sure but I still think to myself, “damn woman”.
Q: What does she do?
A: A nurse.
Q: Did you ever try to get you in the hospital?
A: Yeah but they offer the magic Valley career. Less than 25 hours, part time, no bennies and you’re always on call. They promise you full time but I knew this guy who was there for 4 years.
Q: He never got a job offer full time?
A: No but to be fair, he died waiting.
Q: Well I guess you’re working Labor Day?
A:Ironically enough no. I have it off this year. Going to kick back and just enjoy the day.
Q: Maybe they should give you a special designation for Labor Day?
A: Like what?
Q: Like "multiple crappy wage but consistent job holder if you all rolled them into one job you might have a living wage worker" Labor Day?
A: That’s a mouthful man. But I’ll take it. I'd rather have one gig though.

Came back and read this twice. Sounds like a quality person there Dave. Doing what she has to do. No whinning, blaming or expecting the gov to do something.

There seems to be a confidence in her that comes from accepting that she has control over her life and a willingness to work.

Any parent would be proud.
