MAYBE I’M AMAZED

MAYBE I’M AMAZED………that as this election draws near, there seems to be an integrity gap for some of our candidates for State Representative in the land of the Lac. First off, there’s Ken Smith whose troubles we have chronicled. Then there’s his opponent Kevin Haggerty regarded by some as erratic. That’s the 112th. In the 115th, the successor to Ed Staback has become complicated. Frank Farina who was touted as a “ggod guy” by the Bob Harper ad agency now seems to have been arrested three times. Steve Corbett produced the Court documents while Farina joined him on the air today and the guy was utterly incredible. When one gets charged, arrested and goes to court, that’s something you never forget!! I was a witness in a few trials both civil and criminal and I remember everything. The scary thing is Farina didn’t seem to remember anything And as a politician failed miserably by not even telling a credible lie. His opponent is Randy Castellani who quit as County Commissioner because quite frankly he didn’t have Joe Corcoran pulling his strings. So do we want a "quitter" who says he was glad he got out while the getting was good or a "frat boy" who can't even remember the significance of being arrested? Then we have Kevin Murphy who says he completed the class requirements but didn’t receive a diploma. Did he flunk gym? Did he not pay a bill? The depressing part of this is that there are good citizens with wonderful credentials who won’t run because they don’t have the fire power or the political flunkies to do their bidding. Maybe if Lackawanna County would start electing woman as State Representatives, the citizens might be better off. At least in battle scarred Luzerne County, we do know Karen Boback, Phyllis Mundy and Tarah Toohil graduated from somewhere!! God save us!
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…..but not really that the investigation into the Tyler Winstead shooting has hit an impasse. There’s a story aching to be told here but details into this tragedy are moving slowly.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..that people wonder why we have no jobs around here? Look at our Chamber of Commerce. They’re down to 4 staff members. Too bad the Chamber had a series of high paid CEOs that did little or nothing to bring industry here. It’s convenient to blame the recession but they sucked at economic development when times were good.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……that poison ivy and poison oak are not an oak at all. They are part of the cashew family.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…..that the Shenandoah School teachers are miffed that Tom Corbett is having a fundraiser in their hometown. Seems the Education cuts got twenty of them laid off and now they’re pouting about it. The teachers unions should wake up and realize that layoffs happen and their protections are not immune from a cost cutting Governor. Reality check folks, reality check!
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..at people who try and run away from police. What is the point? They are going to catch you. At least most of the time. You put others in danger by trying to drive through two counties and injuring a bunch of people. If you run, I think the cops have every right to just kill you dead. Just for aggravating every innocent bystander and police officer.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…….that the exit of the New York Yankees franchise has begun. Team President Kristin Rose who was nothing but a flunky put in by Mandalay quit this week. She used the old stand by line, “I want to be closer to my family”. So where’s her new job? Walmart? Did she open up a day care center? Try out for the police force? Nope, she’s working for Mandalay, the same company associated with the Yanks. Well at least they take care of their people insuring them of soft landings.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…..that my buddy L.A. Tarone just keeps on getting more and more calls 0on his Sunday show on WILK. People just love L.A.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……that President Obama essentially killed the United States Space program after promising the workers in Florida that he was for them in the 2008 campaign. This is the candidate I’ll likely be stuck voting for but for a guy who is supposed to embrace science, this decision is really disgusting. It is incidents like this that make me so angry at the Democrats who turned their back on Hillary Clinton that year. I get sick thinking of normally intelligent political. operatives that had stars in their eyes like a little girl seeing her first “Barbie Doll” at Christmas. They feared the skirt and got an empty suit.
A working girl stiffed by U.S. Government workers.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…..that the cheap government workers, Secret Service men didn’t want to pay this poor little girl the money she was asking. What, are they against women working their way through college in an unusual manner?

Yonki, You amaze me. You think that teachers should just stand up and accept layoffs. (edited) Have you given any thought that layoffs mean few teachers now having larger class rooms and the quality of education must slide? You might want to seek a little therapy because you are becoming a mean old man with no thought behind your mean feelings. Your motto should be, "I can't get mine so screw everybody."

IN RESPONSE
EDUCATION HAS BEEN GIVEN A FREE RIDE FOR A LONG TIME AND AT WHAT END? THE STATE HAS POURED SO MUCH MONEY INTO SECONDARY EDUCATION AND WE HAVE SCHOOLS THAT ARE STILL FAILING. WE ALSO HAVE KIDS GETTING HIGHER EDUCATIONS WITH NO REAL SENSE OF WHAT THEY'VE LEARNED. NO ONE IS WELL ROUNDED ANYMORE, ALL WE HAVE ARE STUDENTS WHO LEARNED WHAT'S ON THE TEST. IF EDUCATION WAS RUN LIKE A BUSINESS, THERE WOULD BE LAYOFFS LONG BEFORE THIS. BUT BECAUSE IT'S ABOUT "THE KIDS", EDUCATION IS AMERICA'S SACRED COW. THE MORE MONEY WE THROW AT IT, INCLUDING PLACES LIKE IU 19 IN LACKAWANNA COUNTY, THE MORE CORRUPTION AND ABUSE YOU GET. THE STATE WILL CUT FUNDING TO LIBRARIES AND SOCIAL SERVICES BUT KEEP PROPPING UP EDUCATION BECAUSE IT'S FOR "THE KIDS". EDUCATION ISN'T WORKING BECAUSE THE TEACHERS ARE LOOKING FOR THE PATH TO LEAST RESISTANCE, THE PARENTS DON'T GIVE A SHIT AND "THE KIDS" DON'T WORK HARD ENOUGH AT LEARNING BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY. THE X BOX HAS REPLACED THE BOOK AND IF THAT MAKES ME A BITTER OLD MAN, THEN HELL YEAH I AM. I WON'T BE AROUND WHEN THINGS GO TO HELL IN FIFTY YEARS. BUT YOU CAN'T KEEP THROWING GOOD MONEY AFTER BAD. AND BOO HOO, LET THEM (TEACHERS) GET REAL JOBS IN THE REAL WORLD WHERE THEY ACTUALLY HAVE TO WORK IN THE GOD DAMN SUMMER AND DRIVE TO WORK WHEN THERE'S THREE INCHES OF SNOW! AND BY THE WAY MY MOTTO IS: "QUIT WHINING: YOU'RE NOT SPECIAL: ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE".

Hi Dave, It does appear that all of the candidates running for State Rep in Lackawanna County are pretty much liars and quitters. Makes me miss Frank Shimkus. I'm also amazed at how people are shocked about Tom Corbett's actions. He said it was coming and still the people act shocked.
One more thing, love the skirt and suit line. I never understood why so many macho guys were doughy eyed over Obama. Made me pause to think that maybe some men weren't manly Dems after all.

The bottom line is that with most politicians, they'd be unqualified to do anything else if they weren't elected or had a sponsor. Wasn't Murphy in the Casey Junior Auditor General's office? And as far as jobs around here go, the WB Chamber has perpetuated the old coal miner/coal baron relationship. They have only served themselves. Hey other than those two things, this is a neato place to live, heyna???

Yonki, your reply post to being a mean old man misses the point. You blame teachers for the type of education the Kids get. Apparently you believe the teachers present materials in class that they feel will give a well rounded education. Well, wake up! Teachers dont teach well rounded material, they teach a particular subject and the administration and beaurocrats determine whot is taught. The teachers are forced to teach kids how to do well on particular tests which grade the school. You vent on teachers when you should be venting on all those who set the teaching agends. Now take a pill, calm down and take on those that need to be taken on. Larger class size is far from the answer, especialy when the teaching material is pushed on the teachers.

It is my belief that four years is enough for anyone to be President of the U.S. The office should be limited to one term.
I realize that this has its drawbacks, making the new President a lame duck on Inauguration Day, but is this not also the case when a Pres. takes the oath for a second term.
The upswing is that the new President will not have to worry about an upcoming campaign in two years (when the campaigning for the next election begins) and get down to business without the re-election monkey on his back.
History proves that most second term administrations, Truman, Ike, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton and W have been overshadowed usually by some scandal or just plain Presidential "I am sealed from the real world" contendtedness (correct spelling???) which drags down the administration.
No wonder it is very rare for an outgoing second term Presidents to be succeeded by a member of their own party.
One term is enough. If it were the case then Hillary would already have the nomination in her hands and would defeat Romney.
No one man/woman should hold the vast powers of the Presidency for any longer a period.
Bless YOU>

Come on Yonk, you taught. You know that kids aren't gonna show up all year. You know teachers don't get paid for the time they are not working. It's a 190 (?) day contract.

How many of us could work in an environment surrounded by the daily drama that emo-hormonal teenagers generate?

As far as a real job, it doesn't get any more real than that.

Let's turn it into a business OK? Education is optional, no mandatory attendance. Promotion is PERFORMANCE based so if your advanced you fly through. If not, well you don't get moved along. You can be bounced for any academic hindering reason. TEACHERS too!

Our system has become an adolesent warehouse and social factory without stated goals. Listen to the knashing of teeth and wailing when families have no where to house the kids on days off. Note the increase of B&E's on days off or committed by skipping juvies.

It's like blaming the line workers for that crappy 1970's car we had. It starts at the top but reform must be initiated by those tired of a crappy product.

Remember Nick Nolte in "Teachers"?
NOBODY CARES!

10:35 you ar right nobody cares, unforunately and especially the teachers and the administrators; as long as the pssa scores are passing

The real problem with school administrations is that the administrators come from the teaching ranks. Where d othey get management experience sitting in a classroom? The administraotrs should come from a business background and business credentials.

Administrators NEED to be intimatelt aware of the classroom dymnamics. An MBA won't do anything but alienate. It a tightrope walk.

I also believe the public in general cares less than the admins.

Yonk, don’t be amazed your old buddy Tarone gets so many calls. He’s the most skillful talk show host in this market, maybe ever. Especially when it comes to dealing with callers, and gliding so easily from topic to topic. He actually listens to what they have to say and then adds something to it. Nobody here has ever done that. I usually don’t agree with him on politics. But you have to admire his skill. The guy is real good. He seems to know something about everything, but doesn’t have trouble admitting if somebody brings up something he doesn’t know much about, he’s entertaining, self-effacing, I even heard him joking about his own voice, which I heard some people complain about. He’s easily the best at WILK. It’s hard to believe they can’t find room for him in their daily line-up. It’s ever harder to believe The Talker hasn’t tried to steal him. I’d like to see them put him on against Corbett in the afternoon. Youd see The Talker’s numbers come way up.

both LA Tarone with his show and David Yonki with the LuLac Letter were invaluable to me in getting my message out of no tolerance for fracking/drilling = the poisoning of our resoruces, water and land in Luzerne County during my campaign for county council...truly beacons of light in the seas of mediocrity..
