KEEPING TO OURSELVES

This week we take a look at what this country owes to itself as well as the rest of the world. Wil Toole takes a look at what isolationism means in the 21st century. In the World War II era it was a term that was shunned. But the question must be asked, can America keep being the daddy of the world? Here are Mr. Toole’s thoughts.
Isolationist! Now that's a peaceful term and more and more I'm drawn to it. In my humble opinion, the world has changed to the point where the United States needs to change or greatly adjust our role in the world. We can no longer afford to be the world's cop/peace keeper, we can no longer afford the position.
In recent yeas, I have given much thought to the possibility of the United States becoming an Isolationist nation. We don't need the world and we can't afford the role we have taken on. The benefits of being an isolationist nation are huge and I just don't see the downside.
I think we should begin this process by bringing home every single member of the military. That means leaving Germany, Japan, Korea and every other country and absolutely the Middle East. The role of our military would then be to stand guard on our borders allowing anyone to leave who wishes to but not allowing a single soul into the country other than through proper and legal ways. This would end the drug problem as well as the undocumented folks who came here without legal permission.
This guard duty would allow us to maintain our Army and Marines and of course this would give them ample time for training. The Coast Guard would continue its life saving duties but would be a strong part of our border patrol keeping our water borders secure.
Our Navy and Air Force would be used to keep us safe from any outside danger. We need to enlarge our naval fleet and concentrate on nuclear operating aircraft carriers and submarines. We have recently christened the first of our new nuclear submarines which are 400 ft long and carry the most technological savvy crew in our nation's history. With a fleet such as this, we would be in a position to strike any nation that would dare try to harm us. The governments of other countries would be held responsible if harboring groups that are intent on harming us and we would strike back any time we are attacked.
Can you imagine the financial impact if the total of our military payroll was spent within our borders? Talk about an economic explosion and the good type of economic explosion. Nothing would be imported from any country that causes a trade deficit. We would no longer pay farmers to not grow our food and we would then have food to export creating jobs and revenues. Foreign aid would be in the form of food and clothing. These poor nations cannot eat or wear the billions of dollars we give them. Often times that foreign aid is used against us and we know how often those same nation aid takers vote against us in the UN. We have every natural resource we need and our steel mills would start up again and we would once again become an industrial nation.
Education would be mandatory in that no child will leave school without knowing the three "R's" as we used to refer to them.
Yes this is simplistic but life doesn't have to be complicated. I recall an old saying, "KISS" meaning Keep It Simple Stupid and I think we have long forgotten that simple cliche. If we did become a true Isolationists nation, maybe the world would be better off. I know we certainly would be. No wars unless we are attacked in some form, no cheap imports to put us out of business and a self reliance that would cause an surge of national pride and a real rush of employment due to jobs returning to our country. This might upset the Romney's of our world because there would also be a curtailment of off shore investments. You live here, you invest here. The now meaningless term of "Job Creator's" will become a reality and the money saved by bringing our military home would be used to keep us the strongest nation in the world.

Now that it looks as if Romney will be elected President what will happen on Inauguration Day which falls on a Sunday????

Obviousaly, Romney will be sworn in at noon, but will he take residence in the White House as the official ceremonies are not pegged until the next day?

The past several ceremonies falling on Sunday (the last was 1985) did not present this problem as the Presidents (Reagan and in 1957, Eisenhower) were already in office embarking on a second term.

Will Obama be confined to White House guest quarters until Monday monrning for the ceremonial meet and greet on the North Portico???

Just wondering if anyone has any in depth info.

The first thing that comes to mind on Mr. Tooles isolationist ideas is that we use 20 million gals. of oil from the middle east every day. If that stops this country stops. Oil is what makes this country go. Does he have any ideas how to replace the oil?
30 years ago a president with the nerve should of had a crash program like Kennedy did going to the moon
and get us off middle east oil. We all would be driving affordable electric cars.
ALSO WHEN YOU LOOK AT WWII in hind site, Japan did us a favor by attacking pear harbor. If we would of stayed an isolationist nation in WWII, Germany and Japan would of taken over every country and with German technology it would of been only a matter of time until we had to surrender. If Hitler and his heavy water would of made the bomb
before us, do you think he would of used it on the USA??? In a high teck world, the oceans don't protect us any more. The days of being an isolationist country are long gone!

First I should say that I am a genuine Lulac fan and follower and have been since around day one. That said, too much space and attention is given to Dr Leonardi and Will Toole who should just sign on as Lulac contributors and be credited as such. Toole would be a good addition. Leonardi advances his multi media message and his career which in my opinion gets far too much mileage.
He has his own site. If I'm interested I'll go there. Toole seems only to advance good solid thinking. That said, I am probably close to Mr Toole's age with a similiar amount of life experience always behind the scenes. Like Mr Toole I am, I believe, a "Good American" and have served my Country honorably.
Mr Toole's remarks today are right on target and make complete and total sense to me. I understand the downside and have carefully considered opposing views. I am educated and stay well informed by reading. I do not watch TV or respect TV News. On this issue and with regard to this essay I am in absolute and complete support of Mr Tooles comments. Too bad intelligent, thoughtful people dont get elected to local office where we seem to prefer flashy, got all the answer lawyers and ex mediocre jocks who in the end accomplish nothing and often wind up in jail.
The Hell with the rest of the world. We are in trouble. Lets take care of our own. Lets create a Country where no child goes to bed hungry or without a bed and a roof over their heads. Where no child or senior citizen goes without medical attention. Where Doctors in order to receive a license to practice must dedicate a certain number of days per month to volunteer medical work. The same for other "professionals". And where companies like Blue Cross cant overcharge and dictate medical treatment. This is all possible and the first step would be to bring the Soldiers, Sailors Air Force personnel and Marines HOME. The money saved can easily take care of the kind of suggestions Will Toole and I are making. KISS and COMMON SENSE are needed now. I cant believe Will Toole and I are the only ones who see this. Certainly no politician has ever mentioned the possibility.

Weve got our own oil, 9:32. Weve just go to drill for it and if that means open up the land and off shore areas currently off limits, so be it! We dont have to be totally isolationist. We can still be part of the world. We just cant be nation builders, the worlds police force or the bestowers of democracy on those who really dont want it! I agree with Toole and Cassidy.

Where do we get the oil from? We stop exporting it! It has been said that the US has a larger untapped supply of oil than anywhere else in the world. Of course that was said before global warming has made the Arctic available. I did mention that we would use food and clothing as foreign trade currency by stopping this program of paying farmers not to grow food. They don't grow a lot of food in the sand so if they want our food and we need their oil, then let's make a deal.
.
The Arctic is supposed to be the next great oil field but the Coast Guard does not have the needed ice breakers. We will have them but that's down the road. My understanding is that the only presence we currently have staking our claim in the Arctic is Shell Oil but other nations are hard at work claiming their share. I've considered the down side of Isolationism just as Pete Cassidy has but something must be done. Isolationism does not mean that we will withdraw from the world, just stop being the cop and peacekeeper of the world. We broke our strings and others can as well. England no longer controls India or South Africa just as it no longer controls the colonies.....us! I did not present a new Constitution, I presented a thought, one that I think is long overdue.
