LEIGHTON’S TOUGH STAND

Mayor Leighton this morning stated thst he had a tough measure in mind to fight crime in Wilkes Barre. Leighton’s plan is add an amendment to an existing city ordinance so that a rental unit or an entire rental property can be shut down 6 months for any narcotics or weapons charge.
This is a good move and about time! The problem with crime in Wilkes Barre is not from residents, maintaining their properties and paying their taxes but from out of town “visitors” with no visible means of support driving better model cars than me and you. Most landlords, especially in the North end with a few exceptions will rent to anyone.
If anything the message by the Mayor, sure to be endorsed by the Council sends a message to those owning rental properties: the city will not tolerate your slipshod background checks that so far has imported criminals into Wilkes Barre. We are fast becoming the Newark, Detroit and Camden in terms of reputation. Let’s hope this puts a finger in the dike to build on.
Good job Mr. Leighton.

OBAMA SAYS NYET!!!!

President Obama pulled the plug on a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The cancellation was an outright snub and reflection of the administration’s dismay with the bad behavior of the Russian government. It also reflects the damage done by the Edward Snowden case to the Obama-Putin relationship that has been on the rocks. Obama had planned to visit Moscow for a one-on-one meeting with Putin before next month’s Group of 20 economic summit being held in St. Petersburg, formerly known as Leningrad. Russia.
The White House said this being very blunt: “Following a careful review begun in July, we have reached the conclusion that there is not enough recent progress in our bilateral agenda with Russia to hold a U.S.-Russia summit in early September".
This action by Obama is sending a much needed message for his administration, this country and foreign relations. Now if he did this with the GOP in the House he’d be in business.

GUNMEN AT MEETINGS

It was inevitable that heightened security would be called for after the tragedy at the Public Meeting at Ross Township. The Scranton School Board is setting up metal detectors and I guess that’s a good thing. But it will not stop a crazy person from taking out his hate and misguided fury on public officials. Anyway who craps in a bucket and can’t maintain his property, can’t follow the rules of civilization was not the victim here. The father of this dude was interviewed on TV saying his son was pushed to do this. And that his son told him he’d do this. When an entity like the Sheriff’s Department is warned, that should mean every other entity. These people aren’t logical, he could have attacked a Day Care Center instead of a meeting place. These people don’t think like normal people. My fear is this case will give public officials more of a reason to not engage in citizen discourse. This was a truly isolated incident. I hope public meetings will not squelch debate, input or for that matter a person’s right to carry a gun. Even though this was an awful act perpetrated by a crazed person, I hope we don’t go to extremes in stopping public debate. It’s already been done in Wilkes Barre with their ridiculous time limits at Council meetings.

CARTWRIGHT ON ROSS TWP TRAGEDY

Congressman Matt Cartwright weighed in on the shooting tragedy in Ross Township. Here’s what he said the other day: This evening, Rep. Matt Cartwright released the following statement after the shooting at a monthly Ross Township Community Meeting in Monroe County: “I am stunned and appalled at the atrocities that claimed the lives of innocent citizens in Ross Township, Monroe County this evening. It’s hard to find adequate words to console the loved ones and victims during this time of loss, but my thoughts and prayers go out to them. “Reportedly West End Open Space Commission Executive Director Bernie Kozen was the individual who aimed at subduing the suspect and did so successfully, Mr. Kozen is a true hero tonight. “I ask that the state of Pennsylvania and the whole country join me in standing with this community in prayer and support in the weeks and days following this horrifying tragedy. It is imperative that we as nation address this insidious trend by working together to prevent these random acts of violence from happening again.”

So now Obama is Nancy Reagan? "Just Say No??" You must think your readership is completely stupid. Putin told Barry Obama to stay home with his free health care, free jobs for illegal immigrants, free college money for drug dealers, free pardons for IRS heads who broke the law, etc etc..

David, interesting comment on time limits at public meetings. Personally, I'm torn because it depends on the activity of each meeting. Luzerne County Council meetings would never end if there were no time limits. On the other hand, at the time it happened, I was attending Pittston City Meetings and was very critical of some of the things the Keating administration was doing. To shut me up, then mayor Joe Keating put a very short time limit for each speaker but the thing was that very few people attend regular meetings. So I come down on both sides. If a meeting is well attended and has a large audience participation, limits are required but at smaller meetings with little participation, limits can be in place as a safety net but if constructive issues are being addressed, the time limit should be waived/ignored. Just my opinion, Wil Toole

Dave, maybe there is more text to the W-B mayors new ruling on shutting down rentals for 6 months. What if you and your family were in a multi unit rental building in W-B. Cops come and arrest a druggie on the 2d floor. The city than shuts down this rental prop. Is that fair to you and your family who did nothing against the law but have to leave and look for another place to live. I just hope there is more to the mayors new ruling. Maybe the newspaper I read did not have the completeness of this subject. If it is out there maybe pass it along to others.

10:59, I;m just wondering if you are using or ploan to use those Socialist programs called Social Security and Medicare? Talk about hypocrites.

Did it concern you when Bush took us to war based on a lie and in fact, took us to two wars and gave a no bid contract to VP Cheney's former company Haliburton who by the way have relocated their corporate office to Dubai.

I'm surprised you can spell hypocrite being it so well describes you and your kind.

Thats going to happen to cities all across the country thanks to your almighty President-Emperor who is destroying everything people have worked hard for!

Thanks to you and your kind, our future generations will not be able to spell or read or think..except maybe entitlement programs, free lunches and no dignity.

MY KIND PASSED THE GI BILL, INTEGRATED SCHOOLS, BEGAN HEAD START, PASSED LEGISLATION FOR STUDENTS WHO COULD NOT AFFORD COLLEGE TO GET GRANTS AND LOANS.
YOUR KIND TAUGHT TO THE TEST, BLED OUR COUNTRY'S SURPLUS WITH A RIDICULOUS WAR IN IRAQ, A MISADVENTURE IN AFGHANISTAN, DEALS WITH HALIBURTON THAT ENRICHED ONLY A FEW, SENT OUR MEN TO WAR WITHOUT BODY ARMOUR AND SPENT SO WILDLY THAT EVEN HUEY LONG WOULD BLUSH. BLAME YOUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE ON THOSE BIG DEFICITS STARTED BY THE GOP AND WHITE HOUSE CONTROL OF 2001-2007. YOU MADE THIS AWFUL BED, NO YOU COMPLAIN WHEN SOMEONE TRIES TO FIX IT?
RICH!

Yes and it may be a good time to remind those who would rather conveniently forget, 28 Democratic Senators voted with patriotic bravado for the war in Iraq, including CLINTON,BIDEN, and KERRY. Later, when public opinion turned, these cowardly senators blamed it ALL on Bush.

Well done... One of the local Radio Stations should see the wisdom of putting you on the air. It would instantly be the most interesting local program not to say a couple of the others don't do well at times, but nobody has your in depth knowledge and perspective on NEPA and Luzerne County. WILK's got Webster and Nancy, why not follow with Sue and the Yonks ?

DEALS WITH HALIBURTON THAT ENRICHED ONLY A FEW,

please..haliburton was the ONLY kind of corporation that could have dealth with building infrastructure on that scale

your arguments do not hold water. the senate was democrat controlled since 2009..the only thing Obama fixed was his own pocket..stop using talking points from MSNBC and al sharpton and start using your own mind.

Snowden is a traitor, pig. And if you think Putin is so great, why not move to Russia and spend your days there???????

BTW....I hear the Winters there are quite wonderful. I'm sure the turncoat Snowden will prefer them to that awful Hawaii weather.

Have a nice day!

IT WAS A MISADVENTURE. WE HAD BIN LADEN ON THE RUN AND WE LOST HIM!!! AND YOU TELL ME HOW YOU WOULD CHARACTERIZE A WAR WHERE WE TRAIN THE LOCAL PEOPLE TO DEFEND THEMSELVES, PROVIDE THEM WITH WEAPONS, UNIFORMS AN FULL BELLIES AND THEN THEY TURN AROUND AND KILL OUR OWN TROOPS? A MISADVENTURE IS WAY TOO KIND A WORD.
stop using talking points from MSNBC and al sharpton and start using your own mind.

BUT RIGHT NOW, THERE IS AN ELEMENT THAT IS GOING AFTER EACH OTHER AND IS RELATED TO MORE CRIME THAN YOU THINK. FOLLOW THE DOTS, FOLLOWING THE MONEY. PERIOD!

YOUR POINT IS VALID. AFTER THE 911 ATTACK, THEY BACKED THE PRESIDENT, A PRESIDENT OF AN OPPOSITE PARTY BECAUSE THEY WERE LED TO BELIEVE IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. PUBLIC OPINION TURNED WHEN WE WON THE BATTLES BUT NOT THE WAR. REMEMBER MISSION ACCOMPLISHED? AND THEN TWO YEARS LATER WE HAD MORE CASUALTIES THAN EVER BEFORE BECAUSE OUR TROOPS WERE NOT FIGHTING A CONVENTIONAL WAR BUT BEING ASSASSINATED. EVEN JOHN McCAIN WHO HELPED TURN THE TIDE IN IRAQ WITH HIS SURGE PROPOSAL BLAMED BUSH. AND I THINK TO THIS DAY, BUSH BLAMES HIMSELF (HOW ABOUT THAT, BUSH BLAMING BUSH???) FOR LISTENING TO CHENEY AND THE NEO CONS.
AND BY THE WAY, THAT BI PARTISAN SUPPORT GEORGE BUSH GOT IS SOMETHING MR. OBAMA HAS NEVER SEEN. WHY IS THAT YOU THINK? BECAUSE HE’S A DEMOCRAT? BECAUSE HE HAS A PECULIAR SPEECH CADENCE? BECAUSE MAYBE BUSH IS A TEXAN (A REAL AMERICAN) AND OBAMA IS FROM ILLINOIS? YEAH, ILLINOIS. WE REPUBLICAN’S AIN’T GONNA BACK NO FELLA FROM ILLINOIS. THAT HAS TO BE IT!

RESPONSE: WE REPUBLICAN’S AIN’T GONNA BACK NO FELLA FROM ILLINOIS. THAT HAS TO BE IT!

I think its interesting that you make such claims about republicans considering these same stereotypes you mention at one time (not too long ago i might add..) used to belong to southern democrats.

Bush took us down a long dark road and with bravado Barack Obama is pushing and shoving America down the same dark road even further.

I know that John Kerry, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton are losing NO sleep at night over the fact that they went right along mindlessly with Bush's illegal war.

The Obama years will be remembered as the worst times in our country's history. A broken government that is going nowhere and a President who got re elected just because he was black. Not good at all Mr. Yonki.
