The LuLac Edition #2533, October 8th, 2013

PLAYING WITH FIRE

The Government shutdown is now in its second week and things are still at a stalemate. People seem to think that the President should start talking to John Boehner and the GOP. I say he shouldn’t.
It wasn’t the Democrats who shut down the government, it was the Republicans because they still, still oppose the heath care bill. This is what they oppose:
New coverage options for young adults
Under the health care law, if your plan covers children, you can now add or keep your children on your health insurance policy until they turn 26 years old. Thanks to this provision, over 3 million young people who would otherwise have been uninsured have gained coverage nationwide, including91,000 young adults in Pennsylvania.
Ending discrimination for pre-existing conditions
As many as5,489,162 non-elderly Pennsylvanians have some type of pre-existing health condition, including656,877 children. Today, insurers can no longer deny coverage to children because of a pre-existing condition, like asthma or diabetes, under the health care law. And beginning in 2014, health insurers will no longer be able to charge more or deny coverage to anyone because of a pre-existing condition. The health care law also established a temporary health insurance program for individuals who were denied health insurance coverage because of a pre-existing condition. 6,779Pennsylvanians with pre-existing conditions have gained coverage through the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan since the program began.
Better Value
Providing better value for your premium dollar through the 80/20 Rule
Health insurance companies now have to spend at least 80 cents of your premium dollar on health care or improvements to care, or provide you a refund. This means that 123,581 Pennsylvania residents with private insurance coverage will benefit from $6,875,277 in refunds from insurance companies this year, for an average refund of $77 per family covered by a policy.
Scrutinizing unreasonable premium increases
In every State and for the first time under Federal law, insurance companies are required to publicly justify their actions if they want to raise rates by 10 percent or more. Pennsylvania has received$5,312,084 under the new law to help fight unreasonable premium increases. Since implementing the law, the fraction of requests for insurance premium increases of 10 percent or more has dropped dramatically, from 75 percent to 14 percent nationally. To date, the rate review program has helped save Americans an estimated $1 billion.
Removing lifetime limits on health benefits
The law bans insurance companies from imposing lifetime dollar limits on health benefits – freeing cancer patients and individuals suffering from other chronic diseases from having to worry about going without treatment because of their lifetime limits. Already,4,582,000 people in Pennsylvania, including1,769,000 women and1,136,000 children, are free from worrying about lifetime limits on coverage. The law also restricts the use of annual limits and bans them completely in 2014.
This is what they want to gut. All of the above are proposals that help people.  THIS IS WHAT THEY OPPOSE! THIS IS WHAT THEY WANT TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOU!
Obama has bent over backwards for the GOP. Boehner and the President had that “Grand Bargain” with Boehner pulling out at the last minute due to the Tea Party crazies. The full weight of the shutdown has come down to this: The GOP that had as an agenda destroying the middle class. It has now extended to destroying America.
ENROLLMENT
One of the biggest lies being told by people about the Health Care bill is that young people will pay the fine but when they get sick, can roll right on to the plan. No fuss, no muss. WRONG!!! Like all insurance there are enrollment periods and you can’t enroll when you get sick. You’d have to plan a heart attack or accident from October through March of this year and October through December afterwards.
The more this is opposed, the better chance that yes indeed the health care bill will be replaced. With a public option!
And then there are people saying your insurance will change! NO it won’t. If you have a company that is stopping health care because of high prices, those high prices came from the insurance companies. Other companies are giving people the option to explore the health care and the subsidies but Jesus God, no one is forcing you do to anything. You don’t want to sign up, good. Pay your fine, shut up and when you get a life threatening illness and end up in the hospital with no coverage, call a Republican. They’ll pay your bill. I’m sure of it.

GOOD GALLI

The trial of the poisoning Grandma got under way this week. L.A. Tarone explained it on a previous edition of Topic A.

Would anyone be surprised when they lose this battle to see some republicans lie down kicking and screaming on the senate floor? Hold their breath until they turn blue or intentionally soil their underpants? They behave like spoiled children which is I think what they are when it comes to getting their way. Rich spoiled brats with no regard for the good of the Country!

Obama care sounds like heaven on earth. Funny so many don't like or want it. What's up with what we're hearing of all those people who are now being dropped from their current carriers?
I assume you read all of the pages of the bill, since you are so adamant on this thing. Seems to me there are definitely two sides to this story. But it MUST be all the Republicans fault.

Dave, I think you may have forgotten to mention that in regards to the spiked juice drink. You said to always be on the good side of the MOM. But I would imagine that it was more often than not that you drank anything at some of the moms you have been in the company of.
Truth or dare?

Each point you made increases the risk to the provider and thereby the cost of the product!

Thank you. You make my point. Our nation can not afford this.

If the continued existence of mathematics depended on the ability of the Republicans to defend the proposition that two plus two equals four, that would probably mean the end of mathematics and of all the things that require mathematics.

We are in the midst of a national crisis, immediately affecting millions of Americans and potentially affecting the kind of country this will become if ObamaCare goes into effect -- and yet, with multiple television network cameras focused on Speaker Boehner as he emerged from the White House, he couldn't be bothered to prepare a statement that would help clarify a confused situation, full of fallacies and lies.

You might think that the stakes are high enough for Republicans to put in some serious time trying to clarify their message. As the great economist Alfred Marshall once said, facts do not speak for themselves. If we are waiting for the Republicans to do the speaking, the country is in big trouble.

Democrats, by contrast, are all talk. They could sell refrigerators to Eskimos before Republicans could sell them blankets.

The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the responsibility to originate all spending bills, based on what they think should and should not be funded. But the word "clean" is now apparently supposed to override the Constitution.

If Republicans want to show some seriousness about articulating their case, they might start by deleting the abbreviation "CR" from their vocabulary.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." That journey is long overdue.

?????? THE MORE PEOPLE WHO PARTICIPATE, THE LOWER THE COST. RISK TO THE PROVIDER? WHAT RISK WHEN THE PROVIDER WILL HAVE MORE PEOPLE TO CARE FOR AND CHARGE. THAT'S CALLED INCREASING BUSINESS. BEFORE MEDICARE, INSURANCE COMPANIES HAD NO DEPARTMENTS FOR MEDICARE CLAIMS AND SUPPLEMENTS. BECAUSE OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND, THAT CREATED JOBS. THIS WILL TOO.
Thank you. You make my point. Our nation can not afford this.
BUT THEY CAN AFFORD TO STOP THIS RIGHT? WHAT IS YOUR PLAN, WHAT IS THEIR PLAN?
NO VIABLE ALTERNATIVES BUT TO JUST SAY NO.

Dave, the campaign by the far right and their anonymous big money backers have poisoned the general public in regard to the Affordable Health Care Act. It will take a long time for the slash and burn tactics they used to destroy the publics confidence in this Act to diminish. Until the glitches in the Act are corrected and it is fully implemented and the benefits realized many of your readers will continue to complain about it and disagree with your knowledgable explanations. The more anyone tries to point out the benefits of "Obamacare" the more money will be spent to discredit it. GOOD LUCK !

YOU INCREASE THE POOL, YOU REDUCE THE RISK. THE MORE PEOPLE PAYING INTO THIS, THE LESS THE COSTS. THAT'S THE POINT.
WHAT ALTERNATIVE DO YOU HAVE TO SOARING INSURANCE AND HEALTH CARE COSTS? IN THE LATE 90s, I WAS PAYING A MONTHLY PREMIUM OF $235.00 FOR A INDIVIDUAL PLAN. BY 2007, THAT PLAN COST $535.00.
EMPLOYERS OFFERED HEALTH CARE TO THEIR EMPLOYEES BACK THEN. BY 2007, 5% PAID THE FULL FREIGHT. OBAMACARE DIDN'T RAISE THOSE COSTS, THOSE COSTS CAME FROM INSURANCE CARRIERS WHO JACKED UP THE RATES AND FROM HEALTH CARE DEADBEATS WHO WERE NOT COVERED AND YOU AND I HAD TO PAY FOR THEM IN THE ER.
GIVE ME AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE OBAMA PLAN!
YOU CAN'T.
THE ECONOMICS CLASS I TOOK STATED THAT IF YOU INCREASED PARTICIPATION, GET MORE COMPETITION, YOU GET BETTER SERVICE AND MORE PROFITS. AS LONG AS THEY ARE DISTRIBUTED PROPERLY.
I HAVE TO GO NOW BECAUSE OH LOOK, THE SKY IS FALLING AND OBAMA CARE MADE IT HAPPEN. WE'RE DOOMED I TELL YOU!! WE'RE DOOMED!
BUT HEY, I'M SURE YOU WON'T HAVE A PLAN FOR THE SKY FALLING BECAUSE IF IT EVER DID, YOU'D JUST BITCH ABOUT IT WITH NO ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION.

Thinking the pool is increased? Technically maybe , at best.

When you are required to accept anyone and everyone within your state with or without pre-existings at a dictated cost, you are likely to lose money without recourse to recover it.

Have you ever interviewed any doctors who have their own practice going to see their perspective?

Why must I be FORCED to pay for something I don't want or pay a fine if I don't get it? That's plain NUTZ!

YES, I HAVE SPOKEN WITH A FEW DOCTORS WHO UNIVERSALLY AND INDEPENDENTLY SAID THIS:
1. THE INSURANCE COMPANIES COMPLICATE THE CLAIMS PROCESS AND BURY A DOCTOR'S OFFICE UNDER A SEA OF USELESS PAPERS.
2. THE EASIEST WAY FOR ANY DOCTOR TO GET PAID IS MEDICARE. EVERYONE I TALKED TO SAID THE PUBLIC OPTION WOULD STREAMLINE BILLING. THEY COULD THEN UTILIZE STAFF PEOPLE STEEPED IN MINUTIA TO DEAL WITH REAL HEALTH PROBLEMS OF PATIENTS.
3. EACH ALSO SAID THAT THE PRESIDENT HAD THE ARGUMENT TAKEN AWAY FROM HIM BY FEAR MONGERS WHO WERE MISREPRESENTING THE MEDICAL PROFESSION.
THAT THIRD POINT, I SADLY AGREE WITH. THIS PRESIDENT DID NOT SELL THE BENEFITS OF THIS PLAN AND LET THE CRAZIES CONTROL THE AGENDA. LISTEN TO SOME OF THE IGNORANCE FLOATING AROUND. THIS AFTERNOON, I TURNED OFF A TALK SHOW HOST WHO URGED PEOPLE TO CALL THEIR INSURANCE COMPANIES TO MAKE SURE THEY WEREN'T BEING SCREWED BY OBAMACARE. IF YOU HAVE INSURANCE AND YOUR EMPLOYER DIDN'T TELL YOU TO GO ELSEWHERE...YOU STILL HAVE INSURANCE!
SO YEAH, I TALKED TO DOCTORS.

and the feds will CUT paperwork? Sorry the guys I know have to purchase software and hire someone to retrain or run the software program.
2. THE EASIEST WAY FOR ANY DOCTOR TO GET PAID IS MEDICARE. Reimbursement is dismal and has been cut even further. EVERYONE I TALKED TO SAID THE PUBLIC OPTION WOULD STREAMLINE BILLING. You mean like the website used to sign up for Obamacare?
3. EACH ALSO SAID THAT THE PRESIDENT HAD THE ARGUMENT TAKEN AWAY FROM HIM BY FEAR MONGERS WHO WERE MISREPRESENTING THE MEDICAL PROFESSION. Here's what I got from a friend who works for a very prestigious hospital (Mt Sinai, Mayo stature) "Things are way out of control in Medicine these days.......its always too much work and too little time....on my days off I still get phone calls at home.....Obamacare is only going to make things worse."

I guess it's the "birds of a feather" concept. We gravitate to those who share our characteristics and culture. Still, we should allow our citizen's all options - including opting out without penalty or fine.
