MILK PRICES COULD SKYROCKET

MILK IN PERIL

If Congress fails to act on a major piece of legislation when they return in January 2014, the cost for milk and dairy products will go sky high. This will be another body blow to the working stuffs and the middle class whose income has actually decreased during the last three, count them three Presidential administrations.
State Representative Kevin Haggerty of the 112th shared his opinion on this:
Our elected representatives in Washington will be tasked to regulate the price of a basic part of many American’s diet, milk, when they return to session Jan. 7 as part of the Farm Bill.
A stop-gap was passed last week to keep the price of milk artificially depressed until the full bill can be passed, but I wonder how much longer we can trust Congress to regulate such a basic commodity, especially when it’s connected to contentious bills.
Because the average American family uses two gallons of it a week, I hope they negotiate the so-called dairy cliff better than they did the fiscal cliff and the shutdown. Those headlines dominated 2013, and we seem to be facing another one right out of the gate in 2014.
Jimmy Braddock, the depression-era ‘Cinderella Man’ of boxing fame, was heavily lauded for his fighting for food on the table, notably milk, and it seems we could use him again, some 80 years later.
Fourteen percent of Pennsylvanians live in poverty. To put it in further perspective, if milk jumps to $8 a gallon, Pennsylvania’s 855,000 minimum-wage earners wouldn’t be able to buy a gallon after an hour of work. As an elected state representative, I find that outrageous.
We might not have Braddock, but we the people have the power to fight, and I believe we need to bring that power down on Congress now. The time to demand compromise and negotiations is now, not in January when the machine turns back on in D.C. and certainly not after we fall off another cliff.
This cliff would directly hurt our children, families, farmers and grocers. The consequences of not following through with a comprehensive bill are dire. Join me in demanding that our elected lawmakers heed this cliff and not kick the can down the road, as the feds regularly do when faced with tough votes.

FENNICK TO RECEIVE AWARD

Our friend Jimmy O’Meara, a sensible Republican if there ever was one sent along this message regarding the 6th District in social later this mo. He announces that Renita Fennick will receive the Dolores Grabko Leadership Award.
The Luzerne County Sixth District Republican Committee will present the first Dolores Grabko Leadership Award to Renita Fennick on Saturday, December 28 at the annual Sixth District Christmas Social.
The decision to select Renita Fennick as the district’s first recipient of the award was an easy one, according to outgoing District Chair James O’Meara Sr.
“Renita has been such a force of nature for our Party over the years. In the Sixth District, Renita worked hard to help build our committee. She then did a remarkable job as the County GOP’s Executive Director, where her efforts helped contribute to major victories for our Republican candidates. She has worked on the staff of two Republican members of Congress. She is a member of State Committee. She is a passionate champion of Republican principles. And I’m just barely scratching the surface. It will be an honor to present the first Dolores Grabko Leadership Award to Renita.”
The award was created in memory of long-time GOP committee member Dolores Grabko, who passed away in an automobile accident earlier in the year.
“Dolores was a remarkable woman,” said O’Meara. He recalled a breakfast he attended in 2010 during his first campaign. Dolores was presiding. “I asked her ahead of time if I had to speak. She said no, just stand and wave when I call your name.”
To his surprise, she called him to the podium to talk about his campaign.
“When I said afterwards, ‘I thought I didn’t have to speak’ she looked me in the eye and said: ‘You’re a candidate now. Always be prepared to speak.’ I’ve heard similar stories from other folks. Dolores really taught us to stay on our toes.”
The covered dish Christmas Social is on Saturday, December 28from 1-4PM at 258 Wyoming Avenue, Kingston. More information is posted at the district website: www.6thdistrictrepublicans.com

Why is milk granted this type of support and protection?

There are many equally healthy alternatives as evidenced by those with milk allergies.

Just because its always been is no longer a valid argument. Its not like milk will disappear.

A recent Lulac comment re Christmas signed by Clement Moore caught my eye. I don't know how many people noticed it, but Moore is the often acknowledged, but disputed author of The Night Before Christmas. It has long been alleged that Moore is not the true author of the classic poem. This info is not new, but I thought it was worth mentioning. The story gave us a Santa Claus who drove a team of flying reindeer and came down the chimney with gifts. Whoever the true author was and whatever race or color Santa is, it remains a wonderful Christmas tale which demonstrates that Christmas controversy is nothing new.

Dave, with this latest milk debacle. Why should it surprise any of us with the inept goings on with our government. If they fail to act on this issue in time and if the milk prices sky rocket it will be virtually impossible for a large family of small children to put milk in a glass. What's next, "Bread prices out the window". It never ceases to amaze us all with what will be next.

Not the cost of only dairy products but any food that contains milk in the ingredients. Cakes, creamed foods, etc.

Far as I'm concerned the people get the government they voted for. The wacko TP'ers in the House can't even agree on a simple farm bill and it looks as if we are going into another debt ceiling tug of war in January.

The GOP Congress of NO/What me work??????? Seems the GOP members are acting like the mostly made up welfare couch potatoes they invented. Sitting on their asses and doing nothing. Except they get a lot more "free" government money and full health care than the welfare people. What a bunch of ingrate hypocrites. Then again, they are laughing at their inbred consitituencies all the way to the bank.

Hey, it ain't gonna change unless we vote them out. I don't see that happening anytime soon. ANd so, we keep deteriorating and dumbly asking "Why?"

Nit pickin is part of political life and often trivial, but...
James J Braddock was never referred to as Jimmy. If you are going to use a person as an example do your homework and get his or her name right. Young Mr Haggerty should learn this lesson early as he obviously has future plans and a lot to say.

Best thing that could happen to the price of milk. Perhaps now we can get people off of this worthless cow juice. Especially now buffoons pushing chocolate milk as healthful. Really, now we get all three simple sugars, and high fructose corn syrup in one big drink.

Pasteurized milk is loaded with sugar and does a number on blood glucose levels in most people. Then there is skim milk which is even worse, by removing the fat, the sugar is concentrated more and the fat that helps to stabilize blood glucose levels is now gone.
More so, the pasteurization process destroys much of the healthful ingredients that raw dairy possesses. The word fortified, much like enriched, is code in the food industry for we put some, not all, of the good stuff we destroyed in the processing of the product back in. Since milk is relatively cheap, how high quality do you think the vitamin D that is used to fortify it is?

Dairy isn’t even essential in the human diet. Name another animal that consumes milk after infancy; while you’re at it, name one that drinks another mammal's milk.

For the life of me, I have no idea why a freshman state rep continues to talk about federal issues that he cannot effect with legislature. First Social Security, now Milk. Isn't this an issue for Barletta or Casey? Where are they on these issues? Krazy Kev- you want to help out- work with other NEPA state reps to bring good paying jobs here. Leave the federal issues to the local congressmen who work in DC

Haggerty took a heck of a beating from Steve Corbett yesterday and Corbett wonders why Haggerty won't sp;eak with hin... idiot! I qwoulsdn't se pak with him either. He was also all over Congressman Cartwright because he attended the Pennsylvania Dinner in NY and to Corbett, that was breaking his ;pledge to the voters to be a good and honest re presentative. I'm sorry but at this point I would take Keven the Mouth over Corbett anyday. I find it incredible that Corbett considers himself a journalist.
