Johnson is the subject of a movie highlighting the manner in which he took office after the assassination of RFK’s brother as well as the way he guided the Civil Rights Bill through Congress. Kennedy in the meantime is being recalled as the last time an American politician was supported and mourned by the Middle Class, both black and white of America. In his new book Chris Matthews opines that Kennedy was the standard we should hold in this divisive time.
Kennedy for sure had his enemies. So did LBJ, Bobby most likely the most steadfast of all of them. But the last year of total inaction by Trump on anything Legislative makes Johnson, an insecure man himself, look like a giant. Then Kennedy with his grace under fire and ability to bridge both sectors of America, despite his cut throat ruthless reputation is now seen as almost a political saint.
The last year gives us comparisons into what the past provided in terms of the men leading us.
One look at the movie about Johnson and one quick read of the Kennedy book by Matthews tells us our American Presidency might be beyond saving. The standard has been lowered since Clinton was elected in 1992. Growing up in the 60s, these were the leaders of the free world. Flawed of course, but from FDR to Bush 41, there was gravitas, experience and a modicum of morality. Someone coming of political age in this era is indeed shortchanged.
Here's Kennedy in Indianapolis on the night of Dr. King’s killing.
Here's Johnson on Civil Rights and the dignity of people.
