SPECIAL ELECTION TODAY IN THE 114th

Tonight the seat held by our friend the late Sid Michaels Kavulich will be filled in a special election. Candidates for the 114th District seat are Democrat Bridget Malloy Kosierowski and Republican Frank Scavo. Both faced off in a debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Lackawanna County and have been hitting the campaign trail.
This race would have been hardly noticed except for the exposure of Frank Scavo’s past Social Media history. He made some anti Muslim comments that came back to bite him. The result was his message was lost on Property Tax Reform that were legitimate talking points.
This is a lesson for everyone using social media that what you write is forever. The frequent use of republishing others memes without vetting them can be dangerous especially for those with political aspirations. The disclosure robbed the citizens of the 114th from having a robust debate sans distractions for the entire campaign.
But for those still undecided, here is the link to the debate a few weeks ago.

Today the voters will decide but if history is any past indicator Malloy Kosierowski has the advantage.
In the last fifty years the Democrat has controlled this seat 26 years vs. the GOP's 24 years Don't let the closeness of that margin fool you.  John and Jim Wansacz served a combined 18 years, while Kavulich served 8. Jon Vipond upended John Wancacz in 1972 before he came back and reclaimed the seat in 1974. John later lost to Frank Serafini who served twenty years before resigning. So in a way the district was nearly even but many count Serafini’s long service as an outlier in the history of the district given his money and great record of constituent service. Plus when Serafini was in power there was a semblance of a strong County GOP but now, that is not the case. Even if Scavo did not have issues brought to light, the Democrat would win this.
But today will tell.
