The House Select Committee on the January 6th Insurrection as well as the Justice Department re working hard to get to the bottom of the real story. There are those who say the event was just a protest. Sorry that won’t but it. Times Shamrock explained why in this editorial from last week. Short and to the point.

NEW CHARGES CORRECT RECORD

Sedition charges filed Thursday against members of the far-right extremist group, Oath Keepers, not only seek accountability for egregious criminal conduct but take an important step toward perfecting the historical record regarding the bloody Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Congress of the United States. The Department of Justice charged Stewart Rhodes, founder and leader of the group, and 10 other members were charged with seditious conspiracy for allegedly working for weeks to plan and execute the attack.

That planning, according to the federal indictment, included the creation of two separate teams to attack the House and Senate once inside the Capitol, a third to occupy Capitol Police, and two heavily armed “quick reaction forces” stationed outside the Capitol to support the assault.

The charges answer one of the principal arguments by shameless Republican apologists who have claimed that the insurrection actually was a peaceful protest, “tourists” visiting the Capitol or just a collection of gullible mopes who were carried away with the moment. If the attack was an assault on Congress and the government, they argued, why hadn’t anyone been charged with sedition?

More than 700 people have been charged with less serious crimes, but the new charges demonstrate that the DOJ is prepared, as Attorney General Merrick Garland has said, to follow abundant evidence to its logical conclusion. This was an organized attack on the United States Congress, and everyone involved in it as such should be charged accordingly.

Meanwhile, political apologists and fabulists should start treating it with the seriousness it deserves.
