WRITE ON WEDNESDAY

Our “Write on Wednesday” logo

This week we take on the MAGA issue of having the State Legislature tell a city what to do about a street their governing body named. Scott Cannon tells us why he has taken on Senator Lisa Baker’s decision to cave into the MAGA crazies. She made her career by working with the late Senator Charles Lemmond and former Governor Tom Ridge. I wonder what they’d think of her embracement of MAGA principles. Still another reasonable Republican not capable of doing MATH.

The Nation: 248 years old.

Number of Presidents: 46 men served.

Number from our area: 1!!!!

So Baker sides against history because of pressure from the loud mouth unpatriotic fools that have overtaken her party and no matter how she spins this, her values .Is she REALLY representing her district when ONE person out of 46 is from this region? As a Republican who has a convicted felon in office, her baseline is one pardon that was one of many who was out on release anyway due to CoVid. Seems like the Senator needs to be introduced to the scales (uh Lisa that means there's measures of weight involved) of justice. I guess the next thing we'll hear from her is a citation of honor for Frank Scavo too.

Here’s Scott’s take and letter.

Senator Lisa Baker Gives In to MAGA Pressure

Senator Lisa Baker has caved to MAGA demands, announcing her support for renaming the Biden Expressway back to its original name, the Central Scranton Expressway. This decision comes in response to a manufactured wave of outrage within MAGA circles over President Joe Biden’s commutation of former Judge Mike Conahan's , infamous for his role in the "Kids for Cash" scandal.

What MAGA supporters seem to ignore is that Biden’s commutation follows Judge Conahan's release to home confinement—a decision made during Donald Trump’s first term. Nonetheless, the right-wing outrage machine has latched onto this issue, framing it as a political attack on Biden’s character.

Senator Baker’s silence on Donald Trump’s recent pardoning of 1,500 January 6th insurrectionists speaks volumes. While she rushes to support renaming a highway in response to Biden’s decision, she has chosen not to address Trump’s actions, which directly undermined democracy.

For those of us who see through this selective outrage, this move feels like another political distraction. The decision to erase Biden’s name from the expressway is not about justice or principles—it’s about pandering to MAGA extremists.

Dear Senator Baker,

I am deeply disappointed to learn that you are prioritizing efforts to change the name of the Biden Expressway back to its original name. This decision appears to be a concession to individuals driven by partisan outrage, who are more focused on labeling you a "RINO" (Republican in Name Only) than on addressing real issues that matter to our community.

I have always respected your leadership and viewed you as a voice of reason and common sense in a political environment increasingly consumed by divisiveness. However, this decision feels like a departure from that principle, and it sends an unfortunate message that pandering to vocal critics is more important than fostering unity and progress.

I urge you to reconsider your stance on this issue and focus instead on initiatives that bring people together and address the real needs of our community. I hope you will remain the strong, principled leader I know you to be.

Sincerely,

Scott Cannon, Plymouth Pennsylvania.
