WRITE ON WEDNESDAY

This week we look at the rather reckless comments made by a local Authority Solicitor who should really know better. The letter was published in the Times Leader.

FLOOD AUTHORITY SOLICITOR LEAVES LOT TO BE DESIRED

EDITOR: While reading the recent article about the Luzerne County Flood Protection Authority meeting, I was disturbed by the conduct of the Authority’s solicitor, Jeffrey Rockman. During a public comment session, Rockman responded to a concerned resident by saying, “Follow the law. You didn’t care when eight million illegals were let in by Biden? Did you?” This kind of inflammatory rhetoric is deeply troubling — especially from someone in a position of public trust.

As an attorney, Mr. Rockman should know that seeking asylum is a legal form of entry into the United States. Painting all migrants with a broad and derogatory brush is not only misleading — it’s harmful and unbecoming of someone representing our county.

Out of concern, I visited Mr. Rockman’s public Facebook page. What I found confirmed my fears: a feed full of anti-Democrat conspiracy theories and divisive, hateful content. Is this the temperament we want advising our public agencies? Cool-headedness, professionalism and impartiality should be standard. Sadly, that’s not what we’re seeing.

It is unacceptable for a representative of a public authority to use their platform to spread misinformation and engage in political grandstanding. Luzerne County deserves better. I hope this letter encourages community leaders to seriously consider who we allow to speak on our behalf and shape local policy.
