PHOTO INDEX: CURRENT TWO TERM SHERIFF BARRY STANKUS AND CANDIDATE MICHAEL SAVOKINAS SEEN AT A RALLY WITH FORMER SHERIFF CARL ZAWATSKI.

HIGH NOON

The race for the top lawman in the county is heating up. Fundraisers are being arranged for both incumbent Barry Stankus and challenger Mike Savokinas. This race is going to be very interesting for a few reasons. Stankus' vote total decreased in his last race, even though he won. With a weak GOP organization behind him, Stankus is going to have to rely on his years of service as a law enforcement officer as well as his 8 years in the Sheriff's office. Most people we talk to like and respect Stankus but can he overcome the huge Democratic voter registration as well as the hard charging Savokinas campaign?
The Democratic challenger has built a reputation at a young age of integrity, energy and vigor. He has been making the rounds of the campaign trail since beating Nipper Nowakowski in the primary. His campaign warchest is said to be impressive too. But his embracement of former Sheriff Zawatski is a two edged sword. True, Zawatski can deliver some big vote totals in law enforcement and in the Plains area. That's a plus. But a minus is that Zawatski is a two time electoral loser in the general. The GOP might want to point out the dubious side of this association. However, if Savokinas wins, everyone, including Zawatski will look like a genius. Plus, with Nipper Nowakowski not mounting a write in effort, this will be a man to man showdown in the dusty and sometimes dirty political roads of Luzerne County.

WHY PEOPLE HATE GOVERNMENT

So Lackawanna County voters now are being forced to use paper ballots. Many, especially with this heated, court challenged election are skeptical. Counties were rushed into getting the new machines by the federal government and now the same government can't get the programs approved or straight. BUT we can spend billions in a month in Iraq!

Dave,
There is talk of a county audit of the Sheriff's Department that was done recently which can be very damaging to Stankus. If this audit makes it way into the newspapers or to Steve Corbett, this could spell trouble for Sheriff Stankus in his bid for re-election. Remember how the media stories hurt Zawatski in his re-election bid!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's see, a guy in a uniform or a guy in a tee shirt standing next to a guy who bungled a chance to stay in as long as Jago. Hmmmm, are pictures worth a thousand words???

In response, the photo of Mike Savokinas was taken at his August picnic. Let's see, a respected officer who is still actively employed in law enforcement and still works part-time as a local police officier(Savokinas) or our sheriff who needs to wash produce at the Sunshine Market part-time. As far as Zawatski is concerned, at least he is loyal to his party, unlike Stankus who has been seen at numerous Democratic affairs!!!!

The tee shirt looks much better than those RAGS the sheriff calls uniforms. He should be ashamed of himself for dressing his men and women in such unprofessional uniforms.

To whoever posted the comments about Sheriff Stankus hiring me, Christine Katsock, I suggest you get your stories straight. I was hired as a Part-Time Clerk in the Civil Department. I was hired on an as-needed basis at a little over $9.00 per hour. I do have the necessary experience for this job being a law student and doing paralegal work. I am not a full-time deputy, as you ahve referenced. You are right- I have no experience in law enforcement, that is why I leave those jobs up to the people who do. I suggest you focus your time on county officials who really are guilty of political pandering and patronage, not Sheriff Stankus.

Christine, I am happy you got the job with the sheriff. Maybe you can repair the Civil Division. I have looked at the sheriff's audit and it is a mess filled with simple mistakes along with other huge mistakes. The tax payers have a right to know how their tax money is being spent or not being spent. Do yourselve a favor look at the audit and RESTORE that Civil Division.
