1968

Sunday night on the History Channel, Tom Brokaw will host a 2 hour documentary on that year of destiny, 1968. For those who are just learning about it, you will find it fascinating. And for those of us who lived through it, there will be a plethora of emotions. Some days we'll smile and think back to wonderful memories but most days we''ll re-live some of the painful events of that year. It will be akin to someone tearing off a scab from an old wound that you thought was healed. While I cannot match the resources of a cable network and Tom Brokaw, starting on January 1, 2008 (God willing) I will take my readers through the year 1968 with events both important and small. We will embark on a journey, day by day of that year, rewinding to a time 40 years ago that impacted on a nation and a 14 year old kid from Pittston.

THE JUDGE SPEAKS

Too many times when a commemoration or anniversary is held, especially by people who weren't even alive at the time of the event, important key people are missed. Such was the case with the recent 40th anniversary of LCCC. A letter written by retired Senior Judge Peter Paul Olszewski rectifies that problem giving due credit to the three sitting county commissioners (who coincidentally were fighting with each other like cats and dogs at the time) who rose above their disagreements and united in establising a community college that has changed the lives of thousands since it began. Here's his letter:
Recently the observance of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Luzerne County Community College was appropriately acknowledged as were a great number of people who contributed in some way to help it become a success. Regretfully, those in charge neglected to mention the three county commissioners who made it possible, namely, James Post, chairman; Ed Wideman; and Bill Goss. On a visit to upstate New York, Jim Post was informed of a community college that was just established. When he returned to Luzerne County, he requested a legal opinion from me, the then-county attorney. After completing my research, I found no enabling legislation, but I was satisfied that the grant of corporate powers was sufficient to approve the plan.Attorney Michael Hudacek Sr., who served on the finance committee, reminded me that the commissioners authorized $8 million for the college's establishment. Thus the college was born.
Peter Paul Olszewski Sr. Wilkes-Barre

LOKUTA'S SIDE

Monday morning, Judge Anne Lokuta finally gets to tell her side of the public investigation waged against her by the local legal community. We'll be telling you all about that with daily updates.

LENNON: 27 YEARS ON

There's not much we can say about John Lennon's death anymore. Funny that his killer still thrives though, isn't it? From You Tube and the movie "Forrest Gump", Lennon on Dick Cavett.

John Lennon...

I went into the Voice that day and someone, probably Jerry Kishbaugh, broke the news. He also said, "Get me a retrospective piece by 3:00pm for page 3, eighteen inches."

Ok, I never earned a Pulitzer for the article, but it was pretty good for the deadline.

Father Tom:
I'm sure your article was fantastic. I remember watching the Monday Night Football game and Howard Cosell, who had Lennon on as a guest in 1974 broke the news to America. Not having been alive for the JFK assassination, this really struck me.

Dear Readers:
Dave Yonki's three favorite years are 1954 (the year he was born) 1964 (when he was 10) and 1968 (when he can relive every day of that year in stpuendously boring minutae). I'm only saying, be ready! By March, you'll wish you never heard the number 1968. I knew him in 1970, two years removed from that year and hearing his impressions, I nearly pulled my hair out with his ponderous observations of that year and time. I can't even imagine what has been fermenting in that head for over 40 years on this subject. Not to be a drama queen, but brace yourself: it'll get really ponderous.
Sorry Davey, had to warn the good readers of the LuLac.

RE: 1968
the Field is Wide Open.
the Brokaw thing on the History Channel was, in my opinion, a major letdown! Who needs Pat Buchanan? We get enough of him regularly. At least one piece of music was from the wrong year and it was stock video footage, well remembered and without depth!
Go for it LuLac.

I TAPED IT. I TRIED TO WATCH THAT MITCH ALBOM MOVIE ON ABC BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE GOOD BUT IT WAS SO SLOW AND REDUNDANT, I GAVE UP. I'LL HAVE TO WATCH THE TAPE AND TELL YOU WHAT I THINK.

FROM TIM GRIER:
Okay, I only just found out about this T.L. poll that is going on today...
If there has been any question about whether or not the folks out there are on my side:
7718 blame Skrep and Vonderheid and Tucker (I know it says Commissioners, but Commissioner Urban voted against the majority of the borrowing)
238 blame Tim Grier
Combine that with the folks I have run in to who have offered to pay for my coffee at the coffee shop and buy my lunch at the restaurant, the students who have patted me on the back on campus (and NEPA college students are the most apathetic ever when it comes to politics), the folks who have recognized me in public places over the weekend and approached me to say thanks (even the ones that work for the county - and there has been a couple of those now), those that have called, those that have emailed because they looked for and found an email for me, as well as those who have been in it for the long haul (like Walter and the rest of the politically active crew) and acknowledge that the brakes need to put on this spending spree.
