The LuLac Edition #533, August 8th, 2008

PHOTO INDEX: OUR 1968 LOGO, CALIFORNIA STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL JERRY BROWN AND SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON.

HILLARY IN DENVER

The latest we hear is that the Clinton faction is pushing for a roll call vote at the Convention in Denver. This is an intriguing possibility. If this does happen, there might be a narrow opening for Senator Clinton to prevail. Now this might sound crazy but my child hood friend, John from Florida has said to me numerous time, “I just don’t think she’s done yet”. John has been a lifelong Republican, a two time George W. backer but even he is fed up with the last eight years. If Hillary gets a roll call vote:
1. The Clintonites might show their true colors and resort to the “ruthless” label put on them in the primary. Hey, if the shoe fits…..why not. Look for a concerted effort to talk up Hillary’s strengths and Senator Obama’s weaknesses.
2. The roll call will show just how close the race was in popular votes. This might give some Dems pause as to why the Senator from New York might make a good Vice Presidential choice.
3. Obama has lost some footing recently in the campaign. With some voters he has left the impression that he thinks he has this Presidential thing in the bag. A Clinton loyalist said today on Fox that he makes John Kerry and Michael Dukakis look like rocks of stability and pointed out his “flip flops”.
4. There aren’t a lot of votes separating the two. It is not outside the realm of possibility that some committed delegates might have “buyer’s remorse” and defect to Senator Clinton.
When Illinois Senator Charles Percy was asked in 1968 whether he was going to be Richard Nixon’s Vice Presidential choice, he said, “It’s possible, but not probable.” So too with this situation but oh wouldn’t it make the Denver convention the most exciting since the 1950s!

WHERE’S THE REST?

The state of Pennsylvania’s House Leadership is under fire because of the Bonusgate scandal. It is significant I think that so far only one representative from our local delegation, John Yudichak has called on House Minority Leader Bill DeWeese to step down. Uh, what about the other Dems? Cat got your tongue? Or do you think DeWeese is a swell guy? Sooner or later you have to take a stand. Oh, I’m sorry, no you don’t. No one ever opposes you in a primary or a general. Sorry, my mistake.

FORBES MAGAZINE

How about Forbes Magazine saying Scranton/Wilkes Barre and Hazleton is a dying area. Well, at least they lumped us together as a region. That’s progress. Before they used to divide the three cities but now, hey, we’re consolidated nationally. It might not be what we wanted when the Chambers of Commerce (who have failed the three cities by not bringing in high paying or good jobs!) started talking up “regionalization” but it’s a start.

JERRY BROWN? AGAIN?

Jerry Brown, the man who won the 1992 Presidential primary against Bill Clinton in Luzerne County just might make a run for the U.S. Senate in 2010. A lot will depend on whether Senator Dianne Feinstein retires at the end of this term. Brown was elected Governor in 1974 at the age of 36 succeeding Ronald Reagan, ran for President in 1976, 1980 and 1992. He served as Mayor of Oakland, and is currently state Attorney General. He has held virtually every office in California politics and loves elections and the political process. His father was Pat Brown who defeated Richard Nixon in that momentous 1962 election for Governor when having lost, Nixon declared, “You won’t have Nixon to kick around”. Apparently, Brown doesn’t mind the give and take or for that matter, the kicking. We’ll be watching this one.

1968

The last steam passenger train service runs in Britain. A selection of British Rail steam locomotives make the 120-mile journey from Liverpool to Carlisle and returns to Liverpool before having their fires dropped for the last time - this working was known as the Fifteen Guinea Special………. The Medal of Honor is posthumously awarded to James Anderson, Jr. — he is the first black U.S. Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor…….The Republican team of Nixon and Agnew gear up for fall Presidenial campaigning……..........Statewide, Attorney Richard Goldberg of Kingston is named an Assistant Deputy Attorney in the Shafer administration’s Department of Justice….A Federal/State committee views “The Death Strip” on the Sans Souci Highway in Hanover Township…..Wilkes Barre’s City Manager considers garbage fees for Wilkes Barre residents in 1969….and the number one song in America and LuLac Land forty years ago this week was “Indian Lake” by the Cowsills. OK, John McCain, you've convinced me, Obama is the antiChrist! I think I'll vote for him anyway.
At least he aint a Republican.
Both candidates spend too much time on each other as opposed to identifying problems and possible solutions! The plan seems to be to press on with no plan.

1968
From the heights to the depths. The brilliant Classical Gas to the Cowsills. We're back in Fruitgum Co territory again.

Edwards girlfriend looks like Camelia Parker Bowles or whatever Prince Charlies wife name was!
Another blow for "Family Values".
Sad part in addition to his family is that this joker was in line for a big job in the administration if the Dems get in office. Sort of came on with the Sherwood defense. I had an affair but I didnt choke her. I had an affair but the baby isnt mine. I loaded and aimed the gun, but I didnt expect to shoot myself in the foot!He was just too squeaky clean to be real.

Have to tell you that your friend John from Florida just might have something there. Clinton is praising him up front but behind the scenes.....you just never can tell.

LIstened to Sue Henry today on WILK and have to agree with her assessment that there is entirely too much tax money being used for private business. These guys take the money, then when things get bad, they leave. Maybe I too can be an entrapenuer and get the Guv to give me millions.

I would love to see Jerry Brown in the Senate. He tells you what he thinks and lets the chips fall where they may.

Yonki: Okay so the Cowsills weren't that rock and roll but what a nice move putting them "then" and "now". Man oh man, we all get old, don't we?
As a kid I remember the Wilkes Barre City Manager, Fred Wegner and how he tried to drag Wilkes Barre into the 19th century. They busted his stones so much that the guy vamoosed out of town and I think he died a year or two later. That's what dealing with the WB Council can do to you.
If Obama doesn't make it, I'm forming a Governor Moonbeam explaratory committee in 2012.
One more thing, while I'm ranting, I'm watching the CBS SAturday morning news today. They are talking about Pretty Boy Edwards sex scandal and start rehashing all the others. They talk about former Senator Gary Hart. But they referred to him as a former Governor. Never was. But they had this
T*** (edited) reporter who didn't know her political history from her ****ing ***ip *****.(edited) Horrible.
Gotta go.

The beat goes on with Paul Sorvino andf his ill fated effort at movie production. Seems that Lackawanna
County has no "paperwork"/contract re the $500,000! Apparently Bobby the C, the greatest movie exec since Bugsy Siegel, just handed over the checks. (2@ 250,000 ea)Paulie recalls a contract and blames the loss on the new guys! Here's the shocker. Paul says AJ the Munch was on hand and AJ has no recollection of the event or events. Might prove the theory that AJ wasnt in the loop for much of anything and was just a foil with a once good reputation for the dynamic/megamaniacal Cordaro. Could just work when the indictments come down and someday something hits the fan!

Attorney Dick Goldberg, one of the true gentlemen of the legal profession in this area. Thanks for giving him historical recognition, something at which you are very good at.

John Yudichak is truly a find for this local area of politicos. He has something most of them lack: integrity. God speed Johnny Y.

The Chamber of Commerce in both Wilkes Barre and Scranton are jokes. They are self feeding entities that enrich themselves and their executives. The guy in Scranton won't talk to mere peons and Wilkes Barre is just another chamber that says they'll bring in better jobs. They do for their President and Vice Presidents but in the meantime we all struggle holding our hand on our collective asses for "those high paying jobs".

The support for Obama seems to be on the wane. As a voter, I'm hearing more lukewarm things about him that I was about this hot new property in the primary campaign.

Jerry Brown actually has his sights on being the Democratic nominee for governor. Unfortunately, in polls out here (I am in the Bay Area but from NEPA hence NEPAexpat), Feinstein is listed as the top pick. Otherwise, the mayors of SF and LA will be running against Governor Terminator.

If Feinstein runs for gov or retires, Gavin Newsom will be the next Junior Senator from California. In terms of money, he is fully backed by Getty oil. With the gay marriage initiative, he should also be able to raise large amounts of cash (and be quite a lightning rod for Republican fundraising in his own right).
