The LuLac Edition #803, May 2nd, 2009

PHOTO INDEX: ATTORNEY TINA POLACHEK GARTLEY, TINA AND HER FAMILY AND CLERK OF COURTS ROBERT REILLY.

WAITING BY THE PHONE

Steve Corbett and his listeners today were a lot like teenage girls in the 1960s waiting by the phone for the ring from the boy who promised he’d call. Except this communication was not about puppy love but about honor. Honor as in keeping one’s word. Here’s the background on this story. For weeks Corbett had heard rumors that long time Clerk of Courts Robert Reilly was selling cars as a side job at a Wilkes Barre Twp car dealership. Nothing wrong with supplementing your income. We’ve all done that at one time or another. But apparently Reilly was selling cars during the hours he was supposed to be administering the Clerk of Courts office. The intrepid Corbett called the auto lot at 10:26AM and got Reilly on the blower. After a brief conversation, Reilly told the radio host he’d call him on the air at 5:06PM later that afternoon and explain what was going on. Needless to say, the call never came. Well since Reilly did not have the courage to explain himself, let me give you my take on this.
1. Reilly has been a long time, long serving public servant. He was elected to Wilkes Barre City Council in 1975 as a group of rookie politicos dubbed “The young turks”. Kevin Blaum, Lee Namey and Reilly all served on City Council with distinction. When Eugene Hudak, the then Clerk of Courts teamed up with Frank Crossin Junior in 1987 to try and defeat the Trinisewski/Phillips team for re-election to the Commissioner’s seat, Reilly ran for the Clerk of Courts position. He has served ever since and has been re-elected 5 times. He did take a stab at the State Rep’s seat left vacant by Blaum in 2006 but lost to current occupant Eddie Day Pashinski. For the most part, Reilly’s office has run without incident, until today.
2. Reilly has been supplementing his row office income by taking a side job. No big deal, he did it before with a sports shop as well as a beer concern. But there was no evidence that he did the moonlighting while on county time. The debate started after the news was released today that his job at the car lot conflicted with his time under the dome. Should a row officer do other work on county time?
3. Well, even though an office might be running efficiently, it is not ethical for the head of a row office to be working at another job at the same time he is being paid by the taxpayers. One of the callers to Corbett’s show, Lee, who identified himself as Reilly’s cousin said that Bob had to have the extra job to get his kids through school. Fair enough but let’s ask some questions on that point. Didn’t Reilly know that the salary was going to stay the same when he ran for re-election in 2007? And that salary, over $35,000, let me submit that there are thousands of people in Luzerne County scraping and scrimping on considerably less to put their kids through school. And I think very few of their employers are letting them have a second job in the hours they are supposed to be working the first! And with unemployment so high, wouldn’t you feel better if that second job Reilly has went to someone who actually has no job? Lee also said that a row office is a 24/7 job and that Reilly is on call all hours. He even said some row officers show up at the Courthouse on the weekend to work. I am so sure that is not true that I will promise this: if anyone can prove to me that Reilly worked a Saturday or a Sunday in the past 12 weeks in the Courthouse building, I will eat a pound of cow manure under the rotunda and donate $100 to Reilly’s favorite charity. And the said charity can’t be him!!!!!!
4. With all of the scrutiny the dome has come under the last few months, it is the height of arrogance of Reilly to even attempt something like this. As a long time advocate for higher pay for row officers (which I agree with if they work 8 hours a day!) he has lost any credibility as a spokesperson on the issue. And if he plays the “poor me, trying to get by” card with workers who have the lowest wages in the state, he might have a major problem on his hands.
5. There are many workers in Luzerne County with second jobs. But they are on weekends and after hours. Not during the time the taxpayers are supposed to be paying them.
6. On the car dealership website, Reilly talks about customer service. Maybe he should realize that Luzerne County taxpayers are his primary customers. They pay his salary. When you as a consumer don’t get good customer service, you move on to another vendor or product. I think if the voters in Luzerne County are smart (and I’m not 100% convinced of that) in the next election that Mr. Reilly dares to run in, he should be fired so he can devote more time to his car selling career.

BLOGGER MEET UP

The local bloggers in the area are having a meet up on Saturday 5PM at Mark’s Place in Wilkes Barre. They usually commemorate the Kentucky Derby and are inviting some office holders none of whom to my knowledge sell Am-Way or Avon. But just in case they are, I’m begging off.

JUDICIAL CANDIDATE BIO

As part of our on going series in covering the Luzerne and Lackawanna County Judicial races, we are going to do brief profiles on those candidates running. In today’s edition, we continue with Attorney Tina Polachek Gartley. The order was determined by our lottery at the LuLac Forum this past week.

TINA POLACHEK GARTLEY

Tina Polachek Gartley has been practicing law since 1991. The central focus of her career is family law and protecting the rights of survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. She is the senior attorney at the Barbara J. Hart Justice Center, Scranton, Pennsylvania and is of counsel at Koff, Mangan, Vullo, Gartley & Lach in Kingston, Pennsylvania. In 1996, Gartley became the first S.T.O.P. (Stop Violence Against Women) grant prosecutor in the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office. As a S.T.O.P. grant prosecutor, Gartley specialized in prosecuting crimes of sexual assault and domestic violence. Attorney Gartley handled all aspects of the criminal prosecution of sexual assault and domestic violence crimes from the initial investigation through the trial, sentencing and the Megan’s Law hearings that determined whether the defendant would be listed as a sexually violent predator. In addition to the criminal trials, Attorney Gartley was in PFA Court several times a week and prosecuted hundreds of Protection From Abuse Contempt Petitions. During this time she also instructed law enforcement officials on the protocols and procedures regarding sexual assault and domestic violence crimes and investigations. She also conducted trainings to medical, school and legal professionals. In 2002, Gartley parlayed her work with victims of crimes to a pilot program that was created in Lackawanna County. The Barbara J. Hart Justice Center was created by Governor Ridge and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence and established legal offices that worked directly with and in partnership with sexual assault and domestic violence shelters. The Justice Center was created to provide civil legal representation to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties. In 2002, Attorney Gartley served as the managing attorney of the Justice Center and initiated the policies and procedures used in representing survivors. In 2004, Attorney Gartley became the Senior Attorney of the Justice Center and continues to promote the rights of survivors through her legal work and public speaking. Throughout her career, she participated on numerous local task forces working to advance the rights of survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties and most recently Susquehanna County. She continues to provide training to attorneys and instructed the Luzerne County Bar in 2007 and 2008 and has been an instructor for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute on issues of child custody and sexual assault of children. Attorney Gartley served on the advisory board and as a board member of the Domestic Violence Service Center, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, from 1992-1997; the Valley Santa Board and the Montessori Board of directors. She is the acting president of the Plains Solomon PTA since 2005; Plains Baseball Board of Directors, a lector at Blessed Sacrament Church, CCD Teacher and actively involved in her children’s ice hockey, baseball, wrestling, soccer and golf activities. Gartley is a summa cum laude graduate of College Misericordia with a Bachelor of Science degree in History and English, minors in writing and Russian Area studies. She received her Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law and was appointed to the Order of the Barristers. Attorney Gartley is married to Scott C. What do you have against Avon? My dog has his own Avon lady and he could get you a good deal on Skin So Soft.

OK. Tina Gartley is a zero. I've known her for years in the Court Room and have been on the opposite side of the legal tables a number of times with her. She is definitely a 15 watt bulb. She is running because she is a woman and thinks that will win her the race. Tina, it takes a lot more than wearing a dress to be a judge.

As far as Steve "shock jock wannabe" Corbett. Steve, get off your high "i'll do anything for ratings" horse. Maybe you work full time for $36K (which, may I say is a hell of a lot more than you're worth,) but people with half a brain, education, or skills need and deserve a heck of a lot more money.

And Yonki, show some balls, and approve this. Lotta other bloggers realize blogging and comments are free speech, not something to be "moderated" by some self-rightgeous, full of himself blogger.

Bet ya dollars to donuts this comment aint gonna see the light of day.

IF YOU CAME TO THE LULAC FORUM ON SUNDAY, YOU'LL FIND THAT ATTY. GARTLEY IS ANYTHING BUT A ZERO. SHE WAS QUITE IMPRESSIVE IN HER PRESENTATION AND MORE THAN A FEW SAID TO ME THAT BEFORE THE EVENT BEGAN, THEY WERE UNDECIDED FOR HER. AFTERWARDS, THEY WERE LEANING TOWARD HER.

CORBETT IS NOT A WANNA BE SHOCK JOCK BUT AN HONEST TO GOD JOURNALIST. HE WAS DOING A PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE TAXPAYERS BY EXPOSING REILLY'S BEHAVIOR AND TOTAL LACK OF REGARD FOR THE TAXPAYER. YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT WORKING FOR $36,000 ARE LAUGHABLE. YOU TALK ABOUT PEOPLE IN THIS AREA WITH EDUCATION, HALF A BRAIN AND SKILLS NEEDING MORE MONEY THAN THAT. WELL, CHESTER, I AND MANY OTHERS IN THIS AREA HAVE FOUND THAT EMPLOYERS HERE DON'T VALUE EDUCATION, THOSE WITH HALF A BRAIN OR SKILLS. I KNOW PHD'S WHO ARE OFFERED JOBS FOR $8.00 BUCKS AN HOUR PUTTING THEM ON THE SAME PLANE AS ENTRY LEVEL EMPLOYEES WITH A GED. IF MR. REILLY THINKS HE CAN DO BETTER THAN THE MONEY OFFERED FROM THE COUNTY, LET HIM MOVE ON BUT DON'T TELL ME EMPLOYERS IN THIS AREA VALUE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE. PLEASE!
And Yonki, show some balls, and approve this. Lotta other bloggers realize blogging and comments are free speech, not something to be "moderated" by some self-rightgeous, full of himself blogger.
I MODERATE ALL COMMENTS BECAUSE I WANT TO BE FAIR. AND IT GIVES ME AN OPPORTUNITY TO FORMULATE A RESPONSE TO THOSE COMMENTS (LIKE YOURS) THAT ARE NOT ONLY WAY OFF BASE BUT NOT EVEN IN THE BALLPARK PARKING LOT! THE ONLY ACCURATE THINGS YOU SAID IS THAT I AM SELF RIGHTEOUS AND FULL OF MYSELF. GUILTY.
Bet ya dollars to donuts this comment aint gonna see the light of day.
WHAT DO I GET, DOLLARS, DONUTS OR BOTH?

That post froim 248AM was so stupid that if the poster sat across the table from Gartley in court, it was not as an officer of the law but most likely as a criminal.

Here here Mr. Yonki for defending three very important points.
1. Gartley is very qualified as a candidate for Judge because of her real world expereience in the community. A judge is more than a lawyer in a court reading off dusty law books.
2. Steve Corbett is not a shock jock. No profanity, no rumor. The guy is an asset to the community and a big pain in the butt to the old guard here in Luzerne County. If you have nothing to fear, then he's okay. If you do, then he'll get you.
3. Finally someone with the balls to talk about local employers. They don't value education or hard work. They continually insult the workforce with offers of $8.00 an hour. That's why so many people leave here and you have an ignorance based unit of people here that vote Democratic all the time no matter how many times they;ve been screwed. And that's why Bob Reilly has been re-elected 5 times! Dumb and dumber pull the Dem lever!

Would somebody please tell this Bishop that this is our area too and he does not or has not made one effort to learn anything about the people or the culture. I am not Catholic, but Bob Casey is my Senator. He is there to represent me/us, not Bishop M. or the Catholic Church. I know how he feels on the right to life debate. Theres little doubt, but he has got to go along to get along and in so doing represent and forward the area. The Annual Appeal has been a scam for years by the way supported by the faithfull who simply dont have the money right now! Would you rather have a Senator working with the President or one at odds with him? One thing for sure, Bob Casey and Joe Biden know and care about Scranton a hell of a lot more than
the Bishop who would be King! Just check todays paper, Bishop if you'd like to see what happens to those who want to rule unconditionally. Power and Greed,
Your Eminence, Power and Greed!

Shock Jock Wannabe is one thing Steve aint. He is a former journalist trying to get old time print respect for a radio station! He is finding it tough going, but hasnt backed off one bit. I hope he keeps up the fight. Nobody else is doing what he is doing. Agree or disagree, the guy is an asset to the area in my opinion.

I find it funny that the original blogger said "It takes more than a pretty dress."

Judicial candidate Jennifer Rogers major fundraiser was a Fashion Show at the Huntsville Golf Club - the heart of the 'good old boy network' that Tina Gartley isn't part of.

Corbett ...
Can't stand the guy most of the time. I think he gets a little carried away with his sensationalism. BUT he does make a good point on a lot of issues. And maybe makes a lot of assholes tighten up. You just have to scrape away a lot of the icing before you get to the real cake!

as far as tina, she has a lot of good, but i just checked out her commercial on her web site, yeesh... who the hell filmed it... tina is a very attractive woman and the only thing i can figure is that the lensman was incompetent or they tried to ugly her up a bit under the false impression that people would take her more seriously. if these are the folks helping her, she is doomed... she had some real potential and may have snagged one of the open spots. is there anyone out there that these novices can turn to?

the moderation of the comments for vulgarity profanint or libel is one thing, but many times you have moderated and edited content just because you don't agree with it.. if you are going to do that then you should not allow comments.

I TRIED TO ACCESS THAT COMMERCIAL AND PUT IT ON THE SITE BUT COULDN'T. LOOK, WITH SO MANY PEOPLE RUNNING FOR OFFICE, THE POLITICAL TALENT POOL OF EXPERTS DRIES UP FAST. VIDEO IS A VERY TOUGH THING TO DO EVEN IN THIS YOU TUBE AGE. PLUS VIDEO IS VERY SUBJECTIVE, I BET THERE ARE SOME WHO THINK THE SAME AD YOU SAW IS WONDERFUL.

"I BET THERE ARE SOME WHO THINK THE SAME AD YOU SAW IS WONDERFUL." perhaps, but wonderful is not going to make her stand out in a field of 17.... i don't know if you remember the spot in the 06 election for congress... kanjo's opponent ran a spot about his meeting with a guy with lou gherigs disease... the guy dropped of the planet and i can't even recall his name now, but that spot stuck with me because it really made an impact, that is what tina needs...

The following post was edited by blog editor....
the thing about steve is that he lost his credibility as a journalist once he started shilling for pay. i am sorry but journalist don't cut commercials for land developers, eclectic heaters, clothing stores, etc... he is now a radio guy... he is not a vulgar shock jock, but he is a rabble rouser... he appeals and preys upon peoples fears, hatreds and bigotries... what public service does s that??? he is compensated to be outrageous to get listeners. he does not have the balls, or the courage of conviction to run for office and actually make real change, but he will savage anyone, even good puublic servants to push is ego driven agenda, ratings. he is rush limbaugh without talent.... he is michael savage without the ratings or lisetning audience... (edited) he is a lot of things, but jourlist is no longer one of them... if he stops trying to sell electric heaters and over priced land then maybe i will change my mind.....

THIS IS NOT THE TIME OF EDWARD R. MURROW. JOURNALISTS ROUTINELY MAKE COMMERCIALS OR EVEN DO APPEARANCES ON TV SHOWS. THE OTHER NIGHT I SAW NBC ANCHOR BRIAN WILLIAMS ON 30 ROCK, DOES THAT MAKE HIM LESS A JOURNALIST? CORBETT IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR IN A MOLDY, ARID CORRUPT AREA OF BUSINESS WE LAUGHINGLY REFER TO AS POLITICS AND PUBLIC SERVICE.

Why beat up on Corbett when the same station features Sue Henry, an out and out advocate of and apologist for the near defunct GOP?
The difference is Corbett attracks attention and gets on the case while Sue simply bores the hell out of anyone who isnt as one sided as she is. Sure Corbetts ego is so huge I doubt he and Kevin Lynn can fit into the building at the same time, but anything is bettter than being boring on the radio. In the end WILK is small change in a small market and should stick to local issues where the limited number of people who listen and live can comment. Ratings are pure bullshit, hows the billing? Not that great is my bet. After all it is a business and Edward R. Murrow would still never do a commercial!

Mr. Yonki in your response you mention someone doing a guest spot on a t.v. show, but are their any journalists out there that actively plug products? I think that the anon poster had a good point. How can you be a journalist if you are receiving compensation and lending your name to a product?

At 6:10 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No one, not even William Paley would have had the balls to ask Ed Murrow to do a plug for a paid advertiser.
