BUDGET BLUES

Gov. Ed Rendell said he will meet separately with legislative leaders in another effort to break the logjam over the state budget overdue now for almost 100 days. Rendell called the House action a step back. Approved by the Democratic-controlled House are taxes on natural gas production and smokeless tobacco. These two revenue streams were not part of a budget agreement two weeks ago. Senate Republican leaders said the measure lacks sufficient support to win approval in theit chamber. During Friday's floor debate, House Democratic leaders said they were moving forward with the tax bill vote, but Rendell took issue with that statement. The governor delivered a brief statement in person, saying it pushes the budget agreement further away. The governor said he understood why Democratic lawmakers wanted to express support for a natural gas and smokeless tobacco tax, but said in effect the barn door was closed and the horse had left the building. Rendell pointed to the inexperience of many House members commenting this was the first time many of them worked on a budget.

45 YEARS AGO: THE COLLAPSE

Oct. 4th, ’64 Phillies.

The Phils start Jim Bunning against the Reds on the last day of the season. The Cardinals face off against the New York Mets to determine once and for all the winner of the National League pennant. The Phil’s chances for a round robin three tier playoff are slim with the Cards facing the last place Mets. Richie Allen soon to be named Rookie of the Year hits two home runs off Billy McCool and Joey Jay and Jim Bunning wins his 19th game going the distance. But the Cards beat the Mets and the Phils and Reds finish one game back with identical records of 92-70 while St. Louis finishes with a 93-69 record. Two percentage points separate the Phils from the Cards. The ten game losing streak between September 21rst through September 30th effectively ruin the Phillies season. As a ten year old boy who was at that time a Phillie fanatic I was in disbelief. It gave me at a very young age the realization that nothing in baseball or life is guaranteed and that it’s not how you handle the peaks but how you deal with the valleys in situations you’re confronted with. I’ve had debates with friends and my theory was that if Gene Mauch had thrown out a few minor leaguers or starters and in effect pitched by committee maybe he could’ve stopped the slide. But in looking at the boxscores, he did do that once or twice. 45 years have passed and the amazing thing about this is the second guessing and “what ifs” still go on. I guess that’s some typw of legacy.

Admittedly off topic here, but it should be noted that 8 US Troops
lost their lives in an attack on an outpost in Afghanistan. The enemy had the advantage, according to the news report, of position on
the ridgelines firing down and bad weather contributed to the chaos! Anybody in the military ever hear of Dien Bien Phu? The French took the Valley and paid a terrible price. I know Afghanistan is full of ridgelines, but was this camp wisely located? Sounds like the Alamo to me. A twelve hour battle is one hell of a thing to imagine!
I am more in support of action in Afghanistan than Iraq and yet...
Support the Troops and honor the dead by looking for ways their deaths might have been avoided.
Time we asked the question, what is going on in this war?

Ah the '64 Phillies. Part of a dream gone bad. It was only part of a spectacular year in America. Although Richie Allen is touted for his athletic ability, he was the first true black baseball superstar in Philly. And he took a lot of heat.

12:49 Same old story! We lost 8, but we killed 50 so we won. Sounds like a battle that neednt be fought as according to one report we were pulling out of that position in two days. I have heard and seen it all before. We continue not to learn from our mistakes. Soldiers die in war and we dont seem to even notice on the home front. And we claim we support the troops!

I really think this budget fiasco is going to be a terrible reflection on the House leadership. These guys are supposed to lead, it appears they are doing so but under the guide of an Asian Fire drill.
