CONTROLLER DEBATE SET

The LuLac Political Letter will be holding a political forum Monday October 26th from 7 to 9PM at Bentley’s, Route 309 in Ashley. Participating candidates will be Democrat Bob Morgan, Republican Walter Griffith and Independent Wil Toole. The forum will give the candidates the opportunity to answer questions from the audience in a man in the arena format. All three candidates have accepted. More details to follow. STATE BUDGET AT 100

Organizations representing more than 41,000 non-profit groups in the state came together this week under the Capitol dome to mark the 100th day without the passing of a new state budget. Led by David Ross, of the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations, the group again urged the legislature to pass a new budget. And, acknowledging reports an agreement may be near on a new spending plan, the group also urged legislators to make certain funds for nonprofits are released in an expedited manner to aid what they said are a number of nonprofits near shutting down due to the funding impasse.“Nonprofits are caught in the middle,” Ross told the crowd of about 30 people gathered in the rotunda. “It is vital funding be released as quickly as possible.”Tony Ross, not a relative of David, president of the United Way of Pennsylvania said a survey by his organization found 88 percent of its nonprofits will have to cut or eliminate services if state funding is not received by the end of the month. Sources say the revised budget could be on Governor Ed's desk by today. But I'll believe it when I see it.

CASEY/KANJO ON MEDS

No, the local Legislative duo is not on any mind altering meds that we know of but have introduced legislation that will be bound to help the new Commonwealth Medical College. ”Kanjorski and Casey introduced companion bills in the House and Senate, respectively, which would authorize $250 million in federal funding over five years to encourage the development of new medical schools, like The Commonwealth Medical College, and as a result increase the number of doctors in the United States. The Medical Education Development Act would greatly impact our country’s health care system at a time when more health care workers are desperately needed to address the high demands on the system. Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA) is an original cosponsor of the legislation in the Senate. “Our health care system is facing extreme difficulties and it is currently overwhelmed by the number of patients as compared to the number of doctors,” said Congressman Kanjorski. “This legislation would encourage the creation of new medical schools throughout the country and also assist those developed in the past year, including The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton. We must make sure that patients get the care they need, and in order to do that, we need to have more doctors. These bills will encourage just that. Additionally, I thank Senator Casey’s efforts in the Senate to introduce this legislation.”

Many people have asked me if I’m into “twittering” just yet. The answer is no. Twitter might be good for some folks but not me. I am too verbose. The young people know exactly how and who to twitter. Others need an explanation of what Twitter is and does. For those of you in need of the perfect explanation, I give you two of our regular LuLac correspondents.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip begin an 8-day visit to Canada………President Johnson campaigns side by side in New York State with his former Attorney General and Senate candidate Robert Kennedy………After a slow start in September, audience numbers for the comedy “Gilligan’s Island” begin to increase over at CBS……in the Keystone State Senator Hugh Scot predicts a hard, even bitter campaign. Scott opined that he has always had bi partisan support and that “an astounding number of Democrats have committed themselves to his 1964 re-election…..Wilkes Barre City officials got a sneak preview of the proposed Cross Valley Expressway that would connect the East End of Wilkes Barre with the back mountain. Chief PennDot engineer Eugene York referred to it as the Susquehanna Span….and 45 years ago, the number 1 song in America and LuLac land was “Have I The Right” by the Honeycombs, another British Invasion band.

kanjo is on the case. if he can help the commonwealth medical college, he just might solidify support in the scranton area for his 2010 bid. aligning himself with casey junior on this bill is smart.

It is my sincere hope that you do not edit this. I have kept it clean and there are no accusations of wrong doing. It is a question followed by my observations.

Why is it that everyone at WILK is so thin skins when they receive perceived criticism?

I watched the WVIA show for Oct 8th and the response on the show and the next day from the talkers, is like a bunch of 4 year old children crying. For God's sake, these 4 people make a living criticizing others, assailing others characters, yelling at callers on the phone, talking condescending to those that disagree and now they can't take a little bit delivered at them?

None of these 4 has ever once attempted public service, but they act like experts. Not a single one of them has ever put themselves out for election and actually tried to do something constructive about the problems out there. They are paid predators feasting on the fears and anxieties of those that listen. And when heaven forbid someone accuses them of negativity they are offended? When someone tries to make an analogy that they are in front of their callers and not behind a microphone they use the FCC public airwaves to cry and whine? Good God, get a thicker skin and grow up! The 4 of these coddled egomaniacs remind me much of a Teddy Roosevelt quote

"It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes short again and again, who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause, who at best knows achievement and who at the worst if he fails at least fails while daring greatly so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."

These 4 are nothing more than entertainers. They are nothing more than a part time reality show. It is time they get over themselves.

The WILK stars are small potatos in a small market. Two of them have gone on to larger markets and failed returing to low paying jobs in NEPA. I dont know much about Nancy, but Sue Henry is without a doubt the most boring talk show host I ever heard! Kevin and Corbett are assholes with oversized egos, period! Corbett writes a column nobody reads and probably wishes he could get a job at the Times. Remember a jerk named Fred who used to be on and thought he owned the airwaves? They could all vanish just like he did and not be missed. I would listen to and support a good talk station, but lets face it, none exists in this area.

I am re-listening to the interview. Does (edited) Corbett even understand government and the legislative process or does he just spout off? Does he know the difference between public and private? Corbett doeesn't even know if the medical college has already received federal funds. Here is a piece of advice -- research.
Federal and state money grants are very specific and must be accounted for in reports and audits. If they go to salaries, then that must be stated. If they go to infrastructure it must be stated. It is not the role of the college to go to the press, or the psuedo-press talk radio shows, they report to federal and state agencies who then make the information public.
If Corbett went to the appopriate agencies and found the information and then reported it he would not have anything to rail against. The man is simply a rable rouser. His only goal is to stir the pot and dam the collateral damage. He will only be happy when this region falls further into the depths of dispair then it already is.
This reminds me of his uninformed, off the handle comments about Paterno's salary and that Penn State was a state college, then he learned it was State-Related, which is different and he back pedaled. The guy is (edited.)
He will do more damage to our region than any corrupt politician out there. His goal is the destruction of hope and the ability of people to provide for themselves. He is, dare I say, evil incarnate.

Did anyone catch Corbett's anti medical college rant. Holy shit this guy is the (edited) of all (edited). Salaries are NOT public record and a private institution. Any money that the college received and how it is spent is a matter of public record and the state and federal levels. How the long haired, lazy creep has to do is look. I do not blame the college for not sending a rep to go on his show. He is all nice and shit until the conversation ends then the digs and accusations come flying.
And his anti-Mr. Denaples rants are idiotic. I have an idea, lets close down anything Mr. Denalples is involved with locally. You know what will happen? Thousands will lose jobs. But that is what the inside/outside ugly Corbett wants. If people are doing well, if people are making enough money to provide for themselves, if people are not angry and upset no one would listen to him.
Corbett does not have the best interest of NEPA in his mind, he doesn't have the best interest of the downtrotten in his mind, he has only the best interest of his (edited) arrogant self in his mind.

Your posters Dave are missing the big picture on the WVIA TV/WILK Show. Your readers bash Corbett, Kevin and Sue and have fantasies about Nancy's body parts. But consider this: those King's College kids were there for a school assignment. Yet none had no clue there was a Judicial scandal when Bill Kelly polled them? Are they lazy or stupid? And how about their teacher of Mass Communications. She couldn't even articulate the English language when she was trying to pose her question. See I noticed this becaUSE I watched the show with no predisposition to misjudge, hate or attack the WILK Talk show hosts. Those who made the attacks are the same readers who do this all the time. And I bet there were more but you had to either eliminate them or edit them? Correct? Big picture folks. The kids are our future and have no clue. We're pretty close to being doomed.

Perhaps "our" kids are a little more savvy than you give them credit. Maybe they see through the bravado and bias of the local press. Maybe they see through the smoke screen scare tactics designed to keep people angry from people at WILK. Maybe they look towards the future with hope and optimism instead of doom and gloom. Or perhaps most importantly, they are getting the fuck out of town when they graduate.

Anyone who believes anything will genuinely change in the long term is fooling themselves. One poster was correct, the people at WILK have a self vested interest in people remaining down trodden, un or under employed and down right miserable. Can you imagine if people were happy and out being productive? The wouldn't be wasting precious time listening to WILK.

I worked on the peripheral of local media, so I have a semi in-depth knowledge of that of which I speak. I love your blog it is my only link to my old life up there. My husband and I haven't resided in the valley in over a year. We finally just sold all we had an left. There is a wonderful world away from there:

Can you imagine starting salaries, with only a high school diploma, of 40,000 per year?
Can you imagine a place where people actually talk about how you can do better? Places like that exist. Corbett and Lynn both know about a world away from there, but their failures forced their return and the anger and resentment is apparent every time they speak.

It is wonderful not to turn on the radio and listen to 11 hours of hatred, failure fueled anger, a spattering of religious bigotry, a whole lot of fear and negativity from your local radio shows.

Many of your previous posters are correct about WILK and it's overall negative impact. Turn them off and focus on your lives and they will improve. Realize that the hosts are divided in half: 2 who couldn't make it anywhere else and 2 who never had the gumption to see what else is out there, but all 4 are self important and have a real loathing for the listeners who are responsible for their employment.

I would bet if someone like Duke from Dallas would actually work instead of call in to each show and go to each of these WVIA things (I will bet he was in the audience again the other night, probably Frank Scavo as well) his, Duke's, marriage would have less problems (he should keep his private life off face book too) and he wouldn't need the government to take care of him.

Move out of Northeast PA and your life will get much better. If you can't move turn down and tune out the talkers and focus on your own lives and your life will get better. Stop listening to the negative, depressive pessimism from the folks at WILK or you may never lift yourself out of the gray heyna funk you all are told you must live in.

Glad you got away. People who spend their whole lives here have no idea there are places where people dont fight over ownership of parking places! Around here Doom and Gloom thrives. They even wear T-shirts with that slogan. It aint never gonna change either.
