HISTORY: TEXAS STYLE
It seems like history is being re-written. In Texas of all places. Textbook publishers (which is a large industry in Texas-anyone remember the School Book Depository Building?) are claiming that America is a Christian nation, getting rid of Native American, black and Hispanic American War heroes and are substituting instead the Reagan Revolution, the Contract With America and recommend that church-state separation does not exist in America. If this isn’t bad enough, these teachings are going to be inflicted on Texas school children. And since Texas controls most of the school book publishing and does it less expensively than any other state, this history might go nationwide. It all started when the board selected well-known Religious Right activists to sit on the six-member social studies curriculum review panel: David Barton of Wallbuilders and Peter Marshall of Peter Marshall Ministries. Barton, who has no credentials as a historian, runs a propaganda organization that issues a steady stream of books, videos, DVDs, pamphlets and other materials designed to "prove" the United States was founded to be Christian country. There will be little accent on minority triumphs even going so far as to claim that the civil rights movement was not achieved by people of color but by the majority who made it so. I guess I am wondering just why the hell Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King got shot to death for? What I find appalling is the fact that there is selective Christianity going on here. We hear conservative Christians want the government off their backs and out of their lives. But by promoting this, they are being truly invasive in the way government operates and teaches our children. These are the very first people to cry out about media bias, how the schools are filled with liberal pinkos conspiring to bring down the country and how there is an agenda to destroy Americans by people who think they know more than the average American. So let’s whitewash (pardon the pun the history books) and have Newt Gingrich’;s Contract With America become the defining moment of the 20th century. Moon landing? WWII? The Greatest Generation? Move over. The lunk heads are taking control. And we’re letting them.
