MAYBE I'M AMAZED

MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..that as the war in Iraq draws to a close, we as a country don’t have a clue as to what we got out of the encounter. Sure we toppled a dictator and the Iraq people have new roads, new schools, a new government and Democracy. But they still hate us. The Middle east is still destabilized. What exactly did the United States get out of this foray except maybe 5,000 casualties?
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..at how swiftly the State Legislature moved on saying yes to those new Congressional and State House districts. They moved so quickly you’d think there was a pay raise at stake.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…….that people who call the talk shows in this area fancy themselves as authorities when in fact they haven’t a clue. I heard some idiot on Corbett’s show who cited the fact that so many children were on SSI for attention deficit disorder that this was the reason why he felt the country was going to hell. When the host tried to ask him where he got his facts, he said his “friends” told him. Yeah in the bar. What is frightening is the total lack of information people have. Most don’t realize they are the ones getting screwed. Incredible.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……that city council members of Wilkes Barre were shocked at the various attacks they received on Thursday night’s meeting. People are mad, people are angry. The Council people are collecting full time health benefits for part time work. Mike Merritt filled in for ailing Council President Kathy Kane and seemed surprised at the vitriol displayed. The good thing is that those who lost the last election are not going away. They are going to call this rubber stamp body of jokers on their inaction and inability to understand the frustrations of living in Wilkes Barre. And I’m not even going to get into the appearance by Santa and the gift to Mr. Merritt.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED………that there is a growing resemblance to the poor and ebbing middle class in this country. The working poor spend significant amounts of money on child care, transportation to work as well as housing. It is estimated that over 48% of the people are on the teetering level of poverty in this country. And yet no one seems to get the fact that the middle class has successfully been decimated by the GOP.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..that the Democrats in the House and Senate in Washington caved again against the GOP. Guys, give up already. You stupid, spineless, fearful, scared, pathetic little cowards can’t even articulate how your political betters, the Republicans wipe the floor with you every time. It makes me ashamed to be a Democrat sometimes to see your weak kneeed approach to being the party of the people.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…….and happy that Tampa Rays manager Joe Maddon is making an impact in his hometown regarding the building of a youth center. Maddon is having a major fund raiser to get the Hazleton based project off the ground that will build a youth center that hopefully will unite the diverse elements of the town. Maddon is being ably assisted by his brother in law Bob Curry.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…….that Lackawanna County tax payers have to pay $975,000 to a child molester serving time because a convicted murderer, the infamous Michael Simonson started stomping this guy on the head. Let’s see, killer beats on child molester. Child molester sues, child molester wins big federal lawsuit. Convicted murderer and stomper is not convicted of crime because jury hates child molester. Convicted murderer who killed innocent victim Donnie Skiff is hailed as a man who cares about his kids. All of this could have been avoided with only two strategically placed bullets aimed at two people.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..that the Wilkes Barre Area School board wants to charge student teachers to get experience in the district. Jeff Namey the superintendent said he was expecting a drop and that’s what he got. Namey said that without the student teachers, the students will have their regular teachers with them all the time. Bet the union loved that one. As a home owner in Wilkes Barre who pays a significant amount in property taxes, I’d be totally amazed if anyone in that sorry ass administration might be willing to rebate tax payers some of that money being saved. Nope, they need that to hire the next relative of a Council member, School board member or Administration clan member.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…….that the KOZ program turned into a bust. It was essentially welfare for the sainted small businessman and corporate giants who was supposed to create jobs with all of this government help. You know what it created? NOTHING!!! ZERO JOBS!!!! And these people who were the beneficiaries of the KOZ payments are the first ones to run down people on welfare as bottom feeders at the public trough. Sorry, those unfortunates don’t make promises for the government money they get, you guys do. And you never, ever deliver. I think people who benefited from KOZ and then left the area with a closed business should be legally pursued and held responsible for the bill. Track them down like you would a drug dealer. Although in some cases the drug dealers have more integrity.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..that Barbara Orbison, widow of rock n' roll pioneer Roy Orbison, died Tuesday on the 23rd anniversary of her husband's death. She was 60. Orbison died from pancreatic cancer at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. Her husband died in 1988 at the age of 52.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..that a Judge threw out a protection from abuse order for Wilkes Barre Township Fire Chief John Yucknavage. Proves what so many harassed and abused women have always told me, PFAs aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. But when a dead body shows up somewhere, then you can take action. Yep, that’s real protection…..for the abusers.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED………that in last night’s debate the GOP front runners were playing nice with each other. Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich were civil and jocular with each other. Romney, after spending millions in Iowa in ’08 kissing the asses of the right wingers and coming up empty is just mailing it in this year in that state. Gingrich while leading in the polls doesn’t have much of an organization where he has troops deployed to sit around the fire place and shoot the bull about the evils of abortion with corn huskers. So I think they both were like two strangers at someone else’s Christmas party, they went because they had and just wanted to get the hell out of there.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……that it has been forty years since this Christmas classic was first released. “Merry Christmas Darling” was recorded in 1970, hit the charts briefly in that year but never made a splash due to its late release. In 1971 it was heavily marketed at the start of the Christmas season and became the monster that it is today. Time flies but quality endures.

Karen Carpenter was a gifted artist and wonderful singer. Her personal life was a shambles. Her songs live on but her eath was very sad.

W-B City Council - "People are mad, people are angry" but you know what ... THEY STILL VOTE THESE USELESS PIECES OF MEAT BACK IN!!!!!!
Between this and hoards of other reasons, my family and I finally sold and moved out of this shithole called Wilkes-Barre.

Hard to believe Orbison was only 52 when he died. I was 27 at the time and thought 52 was old. Boy, how time teaches us.

Two bullets? I'm with you on at least one! Thats tough talk, but crap like this asshole need to be removed from society and not incarcerated where they are capable of doing more damage!

57 Years ago the Battle of the Bulge started. The US Army proved that cooks and clerks and supply personnel could damn sure fight and along with the regular Infantryman (Bless them all) we turned back Hitler's last gasp.

The last official U.S. Military
death was recorded in the Iraq War. The books are closed. Life goes on for the survivors and life goes on for the families of the fallen, but forever changed. And the question of why and was it worth it hangs like a shroud.

David: When in our lifetimes has that part of the world EVER been stable? If stability was Khadaffi (spell it any way you want) in North Africa, Saddam in Iraq, and other dictators that's not saying much for stability.

As to benefits to the U.S. the jury's still out and will be for a long time. But I have to think a non-nuclear Syria is one result of US forces being right next store when Israel bombed a clandestine Syrian reactor site in September 2007. Any desire by the Syrians to retaliate with a war against Israel was no debt tempered by overwhelming US forces in the region.

Karen Carpenter......now there was a woman Yonk would have swooped in and saved. Oh what might have been!

I can say with good authority that our David had a mean crush on Karen Carpenter in high school. Had she ever encountered the Yonk and his Slovak family, she'd be still belting out the songs and be built like Rosemary Clooney in the latter's remaining years!

Hey 9:55AM, that not only goes for Council but the School Board. We had a quality candidate in Kathy Grinaway and the smart voters of Wilkes Barre picked a relative of a guy (Jim Hite) they sent packing to jail. PATHETIC!

The KOZ zones are nothing but legalized stealing. How much government money has Thom Greco received through the years?

David, I love your description of the Democrats in Washington. They are all that and more. I can't believe they backed down again. The Republicans will never cave because they knew the Democrats will.
If you think it is the few crazies who call Corbett who are gullible, listen to the Sue Henry show and listen to some real hard nosed poor Conservatives. But don't forget, Sue Henry is no walk in the park. (edited) I have a lot of associates who are tuned into FOX and quote their idiot hosts like they were part of the Lords holy 12. We the people have no future when local radio is so strong with Republican coverage and progressive radio hasn't a chance. Look what WILK does . it begins with Webster, goes to Sue Henry followed by Rush Limbaugh and after a brief break with Corbett, they continue on their FOX type ways with Dr. Savage. We don't stand a chance.

If liberal talk shows would articulate positions in a rational logical way maybe they could survive in a free economy. I would love to see some honest to God lively debate but I'm more likely to hit the button when I hear Allan Colmes take a position than Savage. I will also admit to occasionally hitting the button with Savage. The deal breaker is always philosophical inconsistencies and emotional responses.
