President Obama with Chuck Hagel, his pick for Secretary of Defense. (Photo: 90.9 wbur fm website)

WHY NOT HAGEL?

Former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel is President Obama’s choice for Secretary of Defense. He is a former Vietnam Veteran, two term United States Senator and a person throughout his career tat has ticked off just about everyone. The main reason for his pick, people say is that Obama wants a Defense Secretary that is going to make serious, but responsible cuts in the Pentagon budget. But on TV this weekend, Lindsay Graham one of the Southern Senators who is a neo con who supported those two undeclared wars that helped run up the deficit said that Hagel was “out of the mainstream”. Really? Hagel is a Conservative Republican that has made tough statements on Israel, the Mideast and was a stickler on government waste. Isn’t the latter right out of the GOP playbook? Hagel will most likely be confirmed by a close vote. But President Obama grew a set in not backing down on this nominee.
To gauge the true sickness of the national GOP, ponder this question. It is one thing for them to stomp their feet and hold their breath when the name of an African American woman named Susan Rice was bandied about for Secretary of State. With her Benghazi statements and the attitudes of the national GOP, I can understand why Rice went down. But what does it say when the Republicans in Washington torpedo a white, conservative Republican, Vietnam combat veteran who served with them in the Senate?
It says their hatred of this President  trumps what is good for the country. When the national GOP can’t agree on one of their own, Arlen Specter, a few months in the grave still tells us he made the right decision to get away from these lunatics when he switched parties.

I don't understand why there was no fight for Susan Rice other than the president didn't want that particular fight. Hagle is a Vietnam veteran and hero. He still carries shrappnel in his chest from his efforts to save his brother. He has made strong suggestions of waste in Defense but we have to remember how much money is spent by defense contractors on the GOP Congress. Of course the Democrats get a good share also. All of the president's choice have been outstanding and all it shows me is that the GOP has no intention of working with he president in is second just as they chose not to in his first teerm.

David,

He is a Vietnam Veteran! Not a former Vietnam Veteran. You cant be a former Vietnam Veteran or Korean or Gulf War Vet. The national media often makes the same mistake. Just like you are not a former graduate of a school.
Otherwise you are correct. The last thing they want is a guy who saw a war up close. And yes sadly the GOP so hates the President and not getting their way that they are ready to let any effort fail!
Sad state of affairs. Beware those who call themselves Patriot!

If Notre Dame won it would have been front page news in the Scranton Times. As it turned out it wasnt even a game and the local coverage reflected just that fact.

LOL ....spector switched because he knew he was going to get his ass handed to him and for no other reason and as he was a democrat before he became a Republican I figure he was doing nothing more than returning to the mothership and what does it tell you that the people who know him best oppose him ....odd that don't you think
