TED NUGENT, REALLY?

Rocker Ted Nugent said the country is going to hell and that we have an impostor in the White House. Sorry, I can’t take this guy seriously even if he had Moses and the Blessed Mother on his arms.
See Nugent was the guy who was a real coward during the Vietnam War. He didn’t have the balls to go to Canada but he did do this: to avoid the draft and get a characterized as incompetent, he did not use a bathroom for thirty days. He then went to the Draft Board with the proverbial load in his pants and the Draft Board certified him as insane if not sanitary.
So seems to me that Nugent still is slinging the same thing he kept in his pants to stay out of the Armed Forces. And his music was overrated too.

THE PRESIDENT EXPLAINS THE SHUTDOWN

The other day, eight days into the Republican government shutdown, President Obama spoke from the White House about the need for Republicans in Congress to stop threatening another recession just to sabotage Obamacare, stop demanding ransom just for doing their jobs, and just vote to reopen the government. He talked about the toll this shutdown is already taking on our country and the economy, and warned against the dire consequences of a default if Congress doesn’t act to prevent an economic shutdown.
Keeping the government running and paying the nation’s bills aren’t bargaining chips or a matter of negotiation – they’re a fundamental part of Congress’s job. Here’s how the President put it yesterday:
"If you're in negotiations around buying somebody's house, you don't get to say, 'Well, let's talk about the price I'm going to pay, and if you don't give the price then I'm going to burn down your house.' That's not how negotiations work.... In the same way, members of Congress -- and the House Republicans in particular -- don't get to demand ransom in exchange for doing their jobs. And two of their very basic jobs are passing a budget and making sure that America is paying its bills."
As the President has made clear -- and the press has reported -- the government could be reopened, today, with the votes of reasonable Republicans and Democrats if Tea Party Republicans would allow a simple yes-or-no vote on a Senate-passed compromise bill to fund the United States government. It’s time for Congress to just vote and end this government shutdown now."

CARTWRIGHT: NO GOVERNMENT, NO PAY

U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright released the following statement after co-sponsoring the No Government No Pay Act of 2013:
"There is no doubt in my mind that the current government shutdown is a result of the efforts of a small, irresponsible and reckless subset of the majority in the House. But whoever is at fault for this, I intend to be sensitive to the financial suffering that is occurring for hundreds of thousands of innocent Americans during the current government shutdown.
"In addition to deferring my own current pay until the end of the shutdown, I have co-sponsored the No Government No Pay Act of 2013. We cannot legally reduce our current pay under the Constitution. So this bill will take that pay out in the next session of Congress, the 114th Congress.
"I think that is a sensible approach that will discourage members of Congress from throwing temper tantrums of this nature in the future."

WHERE’S TOM AND LENNY???

The Times Leader reported the other day that Luzerne County government often ends the year with a cash shortfall, and this year will be no different. The county faces about $29 million in payroll and debt repayments through the end of the year in addition to bills from vendors who supply goods and services to the county, Interim Budget and Financial Services Division Head Donna Magni told county council Tuesday. Tom Pribula had the ship nearly on track until the new Manager decided to listen to a consultant and not the guy who had the facts at his fingertips. And by the way, did the County ever get reimbursed for the thousands of dollars the consultant told them was going to come in the dorm of a grant?

And if you went on the Bureau of Elections website, you'll see it hasn't been updated since the summer. That would never happen under Len Piazza. Where art thou Tom and Lenny? Lenny or Tom?

Congressman Lou Barletta on Topic A with this blog editor and L.A. Tarone. (Photo: Ann Gownley).

BARLETTA FEELS PICKED ON

First off, I like Lou Barletta. I respect him immensely the way he set his cap on Congress instead of settling for another office he could have won easily. When Barletta was on Topic A with me and Tarone a few weeks ago he was impressive and said that trying to defund Obama care was just for show. Yet Barletta was pressured into not voting for the clean continuing resolution. An ad produced by
Citizens United for Change took him to task. Here’s what he sent to supporters:
Patriot –
I’m under attack.
Citizens United for Change has put out another poorly prepared and woefully uninformed ad. This time, they’re attacking House Republicans to force us into rubber-stamping Obamacare.
I will not be a rubber stamp for President Obama.
We’ve already started to see the toxic effects of his signature law. Pennsylvanians have lost their jobs, doctors, and health care coverage because of Obamacare. That’s why I’m fighting to chip away at the major pieces of the law – a strategy that can and has worked.
With my colleagues – on both sides of the aisle – we’ve voted for four different Continuing Resolutions to keep the government running and address the major problems in Obamacare.
I’ve spent countless hours working to find the compromise. And every time we pass a bill that funds the government, we run into a Senate and president that refused to have meaningful negotiations.
If Citizens United for Change is really committed to ending this government shutdown, they should target the Senate and White House instead of the people working to get the government running.

In the very first nationally televised Vice President debate, Senators Robert Dole of Kansas and Walter Mondale of Minnesota squared off in Houston. . Toward the end of the debate, both men were even until Dole started to talk about his World War II experiences and how he added up casualties of various wars. He said, “If we added up the killed and wounded in the Democrat wars in this century, it would be about 1.6 million Americans, enough to fill the city of Detroit”. Mondale was ready for that little nugget and said Dole’s reputation as a hatchet man was richly deserved.

The People's Republic of China announces that Hua Guofeng is the successor to Mao Zedong, as Chairman of the Communist Party of China........The United States Commission on Civil Rights releases the report, Puerto Ricans in the Continental United States: An Uncertain Future, that documents that Puerto Ricans in the United States have a poverty rate of 33 percent in 1974 (up from 29 percent in 1970), the highest of all major racial-ethnic groups in the country (not including Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory).....Pennsylvania continues to be a pivotal state in the ’76 race. Governor Shapp and the Democratic machines of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia gear up their organization getting squarely behind
Carter/Mondale. In the central part of the State, GOP leaders begin to utilize the traction of the Heinz for Senator effort to organize in that heavily Republican area……..in Lackawanna County, the Democrats of Scranton are casting their eyes on the ’77 election for Mayor. And in Luzerne County, District Chairmen host events designed to get the vote out for the Carter/Mondale team. Even though both counties have registration advantages, the GOP has headquarters in both Wilkes Barre and Scranton……and thirty seven years ago the number one song in LuLac land and America was “Still the One” by Orleans. The tune was also used by WNEP TV proclaiming that it was “Still the One” even though at this point in time, no ratings were ever taken of the new newscasts to certify that accurately. But you had to love the promotion of it all. By the way, as we pointed in earlier out 16 is still number one in ratings 37 years later.

It's a good idea to use sanctions to force the Iranians to negotiate.

It's a great idea to use the threat of force (war) to get the Syrians to negotiate.

But is unthinkable for the president to negotiate "with a gun to his head."

What am I missing?

Not that I consider Barletta to be amongst them, but conventional wisdom has it that the true cowards in the HOuse are the "moderate" Republicans.

These are the guys/gals who know all of this is lunacy, and yet do not have the guts to stick to their ideals. Many (like Barletta, the conservative) have backtracked.

ANd if I were Boehner, I would look myself in the mirror come tomorrow morning and basically tell myself the truth:

"John, nobody in this damned city likes you. The Tea Party has allowed you to be exploited to the point of coming off to the public and your colleagues as a weak, hapless fool. Your place in history is already written. A weak ineffective house speaker. Do yourself a favor when you go to work today....call Pelosi and bring the CR to a vote. Hell, the jerks in the GOP are going to vote you out of the speakership anyway come 2015. At least history may remember you as a man of some principle if you do this. Who knows, maybe five, ten years from now, Caroline Kennedy will be handing you the Profile in Courage Award."

It appears to me that Luzerne County has completely turned around . . . backwards! Did you ever drive your car forward and then decide to immediately throw it in reverse? The progress made from 2008 thru 2010 when Pribula fought at the expense of his own job loss has basically been erased. Why did Council appoint him in 2012 for 2 months and not listen to a word he said? Why isn't his State of the County presentation posted on the County website which warns not to repeat history? Where is the debt policy that he helped craft and the old Commissioners approved? Here we go again, rob Peter to pay Paul! The chairs have been rearranged on the Titanic called Luzerne County. Get rid of ALL incumbents and Lawton too!

You can edit this next ;part out and I'm sure you will becuase it will never see p;rint but Bednar is a excuse the expression dumb blond. I met her when she ran for county council and I will give you that (edited) And look who she runs around with,(edited) Looks like I haveno choice but to give Carolee a vote. Besdies, there are two ;positives for voting for Carolee, we avoid having a useless incompetent Controller and gain a Controller who will give Lawton fits. She will not roll over and ;play dead and she will not suffer and believe the BS that Lawton shovels on the Council. OK, you can delete me now as I have no doubt you will. By the way, nothing in this post is defaming because the truth is a perfect defense in a defaming law suit.

Dave- where and when did you serve?
I NEVER DID. I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD THING BUT AT THE AGE OF 14 I CONTRACTED A DISEASE CALLED UVEITIS AND BECAME BLIND IN MY RIGHT EYE. WHEN I SIGNED UP FOR THE SELECTIVE SERVICE SENIOR YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL, I WAS TOLD IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THAT I WOULD NEVER BE TAKEN. I SOMETIMES WONDER WHAT TURNS MY LIFE WOULD HAVE TAKEN IF I DID GO. AND I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH NUGENT OPPOSING THE WAR, I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE WAY HE TRIED TO GET OUT OF IT. I THINK HIS BEHAVIOR AGAINST THIS PRESIDENT IS AWFUL AND BORDERS ON TREASON.

At 11:35 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

i guess democrat leadership could care less if Bednar wins or loses. she needs to step up her game in the weeks ahead; stop talking like a mouse over the chewing gum, and get some basic public speaking skills if she wants to win this.

i will most likely vote for carolee as a democrat only because she will be holding lawton accountable

The only legit time to ask about service was when Hawks ran for office! These days that's all far behind us. With no draft promising ambitious young men were too smart
to serve. And I served enough for both of us anyway, Dave. However I might ask the same question of 6:21?

but from who i have spoken to from going to political events, you would think that the powers-that-be (this post is for you casey evans) on the democrat side would at least do some coaching for Michelle Bednar-she is up against Medico who from what ive read is a seasoned campaigner and a political insider

Great article on '76 as usual.
Loved that interaction between you and Tarone.
Am voting for outsiders vs the incumbents in the Council race.
The Charter got a decent start with Pribula but then stalled a tad with Mr. Lawton. Again, seems like a nice man but to ensure true reform, you need someone who knows the enemy. And Lawton has proved he doesn't.
Jim Haddock as a manager?
Please!!!
Plus Lawton and the Council has rejected help from seasoned pros because...well..they were seasoned pros.
The Charter started, spurted, time for an engine boost.
Dems all the way.

is she just there to try and make the old coal mine mules she runs with look better???

David, I enjoyed your come-back to the idiot who asked if and where you served. You do more with this blog that that idiot could have done if he served 20 and retired. I'm a veteran but I don't throw stones at non veterans because they did not serve for any reason. They person has no clue what America is all about and neither does that rock n roll jerk. He wears the flag like a badge of honor and the fact is, he should knell and ask for forgiveness every time he sees a veteran. By the way, as a Democrat, I will also be voting for Carolee and for the same reason. Bednar is a super weak candidate, I don't like her camaign style and most of all, Carolee will give Lawton fits as well she should.

i was referring to your comic book fantastic four group of white-entitled county council poster children (endorsed by Joe Mazur no less) who will be completely worse than what we have in there now Dave.

you love haas, kelleher and williams because they are complete sheep to the bobeck/haggerty plan which was overthrown by king lawton, much to their chagrin..we asked for a prime minister and we got a king instead. thanks a lot county council!

now the only hope we have is in carolee medico who you cant stand because shes a conservative republican..and you, like most of the democrat sheep, cant help yourself when it comes to party and personal views.

YOU DON'T NEED TO BE A LAWYER OR A PROFESSOR TO BE GOOD AT GOVERNMENT. JUST LOOK AT GUYS LIKE HARRY TRUMAN, RONALD REAGAN OR EVEN CLOSER TO HOME LOU BARLETTA. A REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT IS NOT ABOUT THE EDUCATIONAL ELITE, BUT ABOUT THE PEOPLE. I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M PREACHING THAT TO SOMEONE WHO CALLS ME A SHEEP DEMOCRAT!
