MAYBE I’M AMAZED

MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..that the Wilkes Barre/Scranton area has been ranked as the 13th most miserable place to live. So out of many cities that were surveyed, we ranked not in the top ten, (we weren’t trying hard enough) but right at 13. As Huey Lewis sang, maybe we gotta get a new drug. Or maybe we should just get high on life. Or maybe we should pay a consultant to the Chamber of Commerce and have them find out the answer. Naw, stick with what this guy has to say.

MAYBE I’M AMAZED……….that the naysayers still are denouncing the Affordable Care Act. Nearly 7 million people have enrolled. This is called increasing the pool so that this thing can work financially. It slays me that Insurance carriers are raising rates and the Health Care Act is getting the blame.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……..at the reaction in Lackawanna County about the beating of another baby. The “mom” has a boy friend watching five kids. His solution to one of them crying is to bash and then knock the kid around. A neighbor, aunt whatever said they had an inkling that things were bad. She said she called Lackawanna Children and Youth and they did nothing.  I guess that begs the question, then why didn’t she do something? I am all for helping people get a leg up but when innocent, helpless babies get the snot kicked out of them by a “friend”, “baby daddy” or other “caregiver” and I use that term loosely it is time for taking the kids away to another adoptive home, slashing any welfare benefits whatsoever and if that can’t be done, then give the mother welfare but on the condition she have no more babies. This happens every few weeks around here doesn’t it?
POSTSCRIPT: The woman interviewed on TV had serious head injuries from an accident and has medical issues and concerns of her own. Other family members were more directly involved but the woman named Tiffany was courageous enough to go on camera and speak to the media. We wish her well in her recovery from a head injury.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……and speaking of “Baby Daddies” Walt Disney is most likely spinning in his cryogenic container or wherever he is if his spirit becomes aware that The ABC Family Network has a reality show coming up called “Baby Daddy”. Man we’ve come a far way from “The Adventures of Davey Crockett” and “The Mickey Mouse Club”.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED…….that the County of Luzerne wants to start a bank. A few County Council members think it is a good idea but with all of the trouble we have had keeping money straight does anyone thing this is a good idea? My suggestion is to get the finances under control, get out of debt and then talk about getting a bank. As a child my first bank was a baseball bobble head bank. Then I got a Kennedy Fifty Cent piece bank. But the bank would be useless if I had no money in it. As a kid I wasn’t in debt so a bank made sense. I put money in it. But when you are in debt, what do you do with a bank? I’ll tell you this though, if the County does get a bank, I am going to petition for a radio station. Just think of the lineup, “Lawton’s Lecture Series”, “Morelli’s Midday Matinee”, “The FBI and our man Walter”, “The Brominski Report”, “The Urban Legends”, “Dishing Dirt with Dobash” and the drive time morning show to kick off things called “The County Coffee Klatch” with these two guys below.

MAYBE I’M AMAZED…………….while we're in the County frame of mind here, I'm wondering why no one seems to be asking this question about Lackawanna County Home Rule: do they really need it? One set of Commissioners committed crimes. They were some dust ups along the way before that but nothing that a good electoral cleansing didn’t fix. And what is the deal with Chuck Volpe? Volpe seems to be front and center on this thing and one has to wonder if he is using this as a launching pad for some political entre? He has funded candidates, ran for Governor himself twenty years ago and then dropped out. For all I know Volpe ‘s intentions could be pure as the driven snow but people are asking two things, is a change really needed and what’s up with Chuck?
MAYBE I’M AMAZED………that tennis was originally played with bare hands.
MAYBE I’M AMAZED……but not really that many local political heavy hitters are lining up behind the candidacy of Tom Wolf for Governor. We are now down to four with former Auditor General Jack Wagner dropping out leaving State Treasurer Rob McCord, Katie McGinty and Allyson Schwartz left to fight for the nomination.

MAYBE I’M AMAZED……that the Statue of Liberty wears a size 879 sandal.

Olyphant, Lackawanna County
Mom has 5 kids. How many "baby daddys" I wonder? 5 kids all showing signs of abuse. One now dead. Mom needs to first lose the kids and second go to jail for life. No question she is guilty. As to the current boyfriend/babysitter, I am an educated man usually mild of disposition, but in this case I would personally like to be present when he is tortured exactly in the manner the infant was and ultimately after much suffering with no ability to call for help eliminated from the face of the earth! And all those like him who abuse and torture children.
There is no possible redemption for beings like these, none!

Regarding Lackawanna County
I don’t think the current county commissioner form of government has been working.I was in favor of a study. I am not in favor of government by Chuck Volpe. I believe the short comings, Criminal Acts and Criminal Egos, of the County Commissioners Office have been the result of men unsuited for the office being elected again and again. The potential strong points are obvious, three people , and its about time one was a lady, working together for the common good of Lackawanna County. Instead of making the minority individual the odd man out, involve him, listen to an occasional idea and treat your fellow elected commissioner with common respect. He or she may well have gotten more votes than you, more support from citizens. Find Quality Candidates who want the job. Not easy, but the pay is pretty good.Work hard to make this system work. Beware a system that adds to government with 7 new elected regionally biased and dependent individuals! If three doesn’t work why would 7 plus one?Lets not allow the Cordaro/Munchak legacy, which was really the over the top last act in a long time Lackawanna County culture of corruption on all levels, cause us to over react. The study was a good idea. Change the players not the system right now.

Once more you come up with an incredible post on LuLac. Love the County bank vs. the County Radio station? I've heard Jim Bobeck and he is quite the conversationalist.
On the Governor's race...right on the money regarding the Final Four. McCord has baggage with the teachers unions, as you said from the onset McGinty and Schwartz will split a demograpghic and that leaves Wolf.
Local politicos aren't dumb.

A few thinhgs, I think Lackawanna County Home Rule will fail mainly because of the trouble Luzerne County resdents are having accepting it as fact.
Also, I know we are a miserable area. Just look at the coal miner mentality that has been perpetuated by the lackluster performance of our Chambers of Commerce.
Why are wages so low here?
That's why we're miserable.

Yonk, you have been quite accurate about the appeal of Tom Wolf. Yet I am perplexed that you seem to be sticking to this 8 year logic of party control for the guvs race. I can't see Corbett winning again.

Re: Anon, 10:45.
I hope Yonk is wrong but I tend to agree. Let history be the barometer:
At this point in 1982 incumbent Gov. Dick Thornburgh was in grave political trouble and many pundits were talking of a one term administration. Thornburgh went on in the fall to defeat challenger Allen Ertel by a whisker.
Now, what is truly impressive about Thornburgh's victory is that 1982 was a big mid-term year for Democrats..most of the US House seats lost in 1980 were re-taken. Still Ertel, a Democrat, could not pull out a victory.
This year looks to be a big GOP year. Corbett as a Republican is in a far better position than Thornburgh was if we view the historical pattern of 82. MOre REpublicans will be drawn to the polls and many Dems will stay home. Simple math.
Corbett's own butt may have been saved by the public's ignorant disdain for Obamacare.
Then again, I could be wrong.

Anyone with any understanding of economics would not be surprised that insurance companies are passing along the increased costs from the ACA to the consumer. The ACA tells insurers that they need to increase their coverage, and you are surprised that said increase results in increased premiums? Take an economics course.

I’ve operated on intuition most of my life. Never thought I was that smart, rather perceptive.
That said, cant tell ya how much Volpe concerns me and just rubs me the wrong way! Was sorry to
see Cartwright on his “program”. The guy has a personal agenda and it has to do with ego and power.
I am strongly against a change in Lacka County government and worried with this guy and his money as
the driving force for bad and unnecessary change! Recent commissioners have been bad that’s a fact and it continues, but imagine 7 of em! Geez!
