100 years ago today Babe Ruth broke in with the Boston Red Sox as a pitcher. It was the start of a famed reign that had its ups and downs but certainly has lived on long after the man’s death. They say legends are made, not born. With Ruth, I’ll just say maybe.

I am not a Yankee fan, but I am a true baseball fan. I have read up on and studied the early days and am old enough to remember the mid fifties. I am falling away in recent years in part due to the out and out greed and commercialism that plagues today'
s game. That said, the Greatest Baseball Player and the greatest asset the game has ever had is without a doubt the one and only George Herman Babe Ruth. Had he not picked up a bat he would still be in the Hall of Fame as a pitcher, but at the plate he became the Sultan of Swat, the Bambino, the Big Bam and the best ever, period. Regarding that SOB Maris, he still holds the single season HR record and there is in fact no asterisk!

Name all the great personalities and stars of sport over those 100 years from Ali to Jordan and all the movie stars and media manufactured egomaniacs and no name stands up to Babe Ruth! The man and his achievements and legend are simply over the top. Then consider that he has been gone from the stage for 65 of those 100 years. He rescued baseball and then taught a whole new way to play the game. One of a kind. The Babe.
Let's not forget the babe liked the babes, even if they were a tad underage
Excellent book by Leigh Montville
published around 2005 called the
Big Bam. The author separates the real from the fantasy and does a great job. The real is pretty fantastic. So was the Babe!

I admit he was no saint but never have I seen your accusation which you present as if it were an excepted fact.
