If I were the Lackawanna County GOP, I’d run a group of people labeled as Real Republicans. People interested are Frank Scavo and Laureen Cummings. I both violently disagree with both of them on national issues but locally I think they would be formidable. BUT they have to stick to local issues.
Steve Corbett made the comment on his show that most likely the prospect of a Laureen Cummings candidacy drove O’Malley crazy and maybe drove him back to the Dems. Can you imagine a real Republican running against O'Malley who has been regarded by some as the third Democratic Commissioner even before he switched. He’s right. Cummings is well known, acquitted herself well against Congressman Cartwright and makes some very good points in terms of local fiscal austerity. Normally you might think that two candidates from an area might be seen as a political liability but the other candidates from the city are woeful in their ability to mount a serious campaign.
If Charlie Spano wants to run, he should run alone and trumpet his citizen activism as well as his work on the planning commission. Bill Jones who some people think was cut 5,000 votes in the last election by “The Statesman” can bring a balance from the Upper Valley. One wonders why anyone would entrust a candidacy to Paul Catelano after the terrible job he did as chairman of the GOP. Buona Pizza owner and former candidate for Council Giovanni Piccolino has also been mentioned but may not get support outside of Scranton.
Some say the dream ticket would be for Cummings to pair with Spano or maybe Jones to pair with Scavo. The great temptation in heavily Democratic Lackawanna County is to form a ticket on the GOP side and let the stronger of the two will out to become the Minority Commissioner. I’d like to see each candidate run individually and then get things sorted out in the General. The last thing a minority party needs in a primary are two factions going against each other.
The Republican Party of Luzerne County will provide Notary Service for Republican candidates on Monday, March 9, 2015 from 5-7 PM at Grotto Pizza at the Wyoming Valley Mall in Wilkes-Barre.
Deadline for filing of Candidate Petitions is Tuesday, March 10, 2015.

Joe Biden is going to speak at the friendly sons of Saint Patrick dinner, the Scranton chapter?
I may have to tune in to Steve Corbett. 2 things he despises most, the Vice President and the Scranton friendly sons' dinner, he may actually have a breakdown on the air and I would not want to miss that.
Come on Yonk, couldn't you get a better picture of Cummings? One showing her legs?
One thing about Cummings and cavo. Cummings does not get derailed by national issues. In his frequent calls to WILK he comes across as the foil for the talk show hosts. If I were Mr. Scavo, I'd focus on the local issues more. He does remind people that he was the recipient of the infamous Robert Mellow "get a life" e mail response.
Either one of them though would shake things up.
Dave, your thoughts on the Lackawanna County GOP are right on the money. They need to run alone then team up and try to overtake the duo aiming clearly at O'Malley.
Biden should kick off his run for President at the dinner.
Yonk.....great headline on the scrappy kid from Scranton. Wish a newspaper would hire you.
Corbett has left a new comment on your post " The LuLac Edition #2851, March 7th, 2015":
Sexism! How dare Joe Biden come to town and put on such an obvious display of sexism.
