Big news: a six part PCN series on gerrymandering and redistricting reform in Pennsylvania, starting Sunday, April 19.

Last fall the League of Women Voters of the United States announced People Powered Fair Maps (PPFM), a national redistricting initiative focused on creating fair political maps nationwide.

The program is comprised of five major focus areas:
● Ballot Initiatives or Referendums
● State Constitutional Options
● State Legislative Fixes
● Federal Legislative Fixes
● Civic Engagement & Education

Leagues across the country are being asked to participate by committing to working on one or more of the program areas.

Here in Pennsylvania, the LWVPA led the way in addressing our congressional districts through the successful 2018 League lawsuit. Yet our legislative districts (PA House and Senate) continue to be among the most gerrymandered in the nation, and our congressional districts will be redrawn in 2021 through the same processes that gave us the gerrymandered 2011 map.

That’s why the LWVPA is participating in PPFM, working for state constitutional options, state and federal legislative fixes, and civic engagement and education.

LWVPA has been working on all these aspects of the PPFM initiative for years, most recently through our project Fair Districts PA (FDPA). Carol Kuniholm, chair of FDPA, has agreed to lead PPFM here in Pennsylvania, working with both LWVPA and FDPA to strengthen our work together and ensure real reform before new maps are drawn in 2021.

Many of our local Leagues are already working closely with their local FDPA counterparts. Our goals are to invite even closer partnership, to document that work more carefully, and to extend advocacy and engagement opportunities to all League members.

So back to that big news: FDPA is presenting a six-part series on PCN titled “Let’s End Gerrymandering,” co-branded with LWVPA and PPFM, highlighting work done across the past four years and encouraging viewers to get involved. The program will air Sundays at 2:30 pm from April 19 to May 24. Episodes will be rebroadcast the following Sundays at 5:30 pm, from April 26 to May 31. Check your cable provider for PCN stations in your area.
