2021 JUDICIAL RACE FOR LUZERNE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS

Here are links to the feature stories LuLac gave on each candidate running for Judge.

During the campaign LuLac did profiles on each candidate. Through the years, this blog editor has met every single candidate. (The only person I didn't have a photo with was Magistrate Kokura Kravitz but she did marry my good friend Wil and his wife on a boat!!!) After the NAACP Forum I spoke with a sitting Judge on the Luzerne County bench who made the observation after watching our event, "All of them (meaning the candidates) are very good." Indeed, it will be hard to pick but we ask voters, if they not have done so already, to think critically when choosing.

THREE BIG RACES IN THE LAC

LACKAWANNA COUNTY COURT OF COMMON PLEAS

Walsh_Dempsey

Ware

Arora

Three candidates for Judge are running, two are Democrats Mary Walsh Dempsey and Magistrate Paul Ware.

Nisha Arora is a Republican. Walsh-Dempsey has the backing of heavy hitters in the county. Even former Attorney General Kathleen Kane has been seen escorting the candidate through political circles.

Magistrate Paul Ware has been touting his experience as a  Magistrate and has run an aggressive campaign.

Nisha Arora bills herself as a Conservative Republican., She is the youngest one running for the bench. All three candidates are  cross-filed and vying for the one seat.

 SCRANTON  MAYOR

 Cognetti
Murray

Incumbent Paige Cognetti is being opposed by John Mayor Paige Cognetti.  has been in office two years and has made an impressive record for herself. Murray has said he will stay in Scranton and not ue the office as a political stepping stone.

 22nd SENATORIAL DISTRICT

John Blake vacated the seat to work for Matt Cartwright. Marty Flynn is running to succeed him. He’s been a 4 term legislator.

MARTY FLYNN

Marty Flynn was born and raised in Scranton, graduated from Marywood University, served as a Lackawanna County Prison education coordinator, and now represents his hometown of Scranton in the Pennsylvania State House. He’s spent eight years as one of the highest-ranked Representatives for helping his constituents, and Marty’s community wins when he’s in Harrisburg fighting for them. Now he wants to take that fight to the State Senate where he can be an even louder voice for his larger community.

While working his way through college, Marty started boxing at his local club in Scranton. He quickly discovered his talent in the ring and began traveling across the state for training and matches— eventually going professional in the early 2000s. After graduating from Marywood University, Marty worked as the education/program coordinator for the Lackawanna County Prison and served as chairman of the Prison Misconduct Board.

Marty used that determination he learned in the ring when he decided he wanted to serve his community in a greater capacity. In 2012, he ran for Pennsylvania’s 113th House District and pulled off an upset victory against the four-year incumbent. Since joining the House, Marty has kept up that fight for his community, delivering grants and state projects in his district.

Representative Flynn is the Chairman of the Northeast Delegation in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and serves on the Appropriations, Consumer Affairs, Insurance, and Professional Licensure committees. Marty’s record in Harrisburg has been defined by fighting for union rights, standing up for seniors, and advocating for the working families of Pennsylvania. His strong legislative record and his constituent service make him a strong advocate for the people of the 113th District.

Marty Flynn is running for the Pennsylvania State Senate because Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Monroe counties need a voice that won’t back down. As a State Representative, Marty consistently delivers results for the workers, seniors, teachers, unions, and families of his district— but the larger community where he was born and raised deserves a louder voice in Harrisburg. Marty Flynn has never stopped fighting in the Pennsylvania House, and he’ll continue to deliver for the people of the 22nd District as their next State Senator.

 CHRIS CHERMAK

Flynn  is being opposed by Chris Chermak  Currently a County Commissioner, Chermak is making the point that the District needs a Senator that will be part of the Republican majority in Harrisburg. The last Republican to be elected was in 1966. During that time the GOP has held the Senate for about 85% of the time. Here is Charmak’s last minute schedule.
