GOV. SHAPIRO: ‘BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL’ WILL HAVE DEVASTATING IMPACTS ON PENNSYLVANIA

The Times Leader reports that Gov. Josh Shapiro on Wednesday said he wanted to be clear that the bill Congressional Republicans are rushing to pass would have devastating impacts on Pennsylvania.

“To our members of Congress considering voting for this bill — if you do, you are doing so knowing the consequences it will have across Pennsylvania and in your districts,” Shapiro said. “Pennsylvanians will lose Medicaid and food assistance through SNAP in your districts if this bill is passed.”

On Wednesday, Shapiro released a comprehensive fact sheet — Congressional district by district — on the impact the reconciliation bill will have on Pennsylvania.

According to the Governor’s fact sheet:

• 310,000 would lose Medicaid coverage, while 144,000 Pennsylvanians on SNAP risk losing access to food assistance statewide.

A news release from the governor’s office stated that recently released new data shows that many Pennsylvanians will lose Medicaid and SNAP benefits as a result of the reconciliation bill that passed the U.S. Senate on Tuesday and is now being considered in the House of Representatives.

Here is a breakdown of how many Pennsylvanians in the 8th Congressional District and 9th Congressional District could lose Medicaid and SNAP benefits if the version of the reconciliation bill the Senate passed is signed into law:

PA 8th Congressional District — Rep. Rob Bresnahan, R-Dallas Township:

• 21,637 Pennsylvanians will lose Medicaid coverage.

• 11,572 Pennsylvanians will lose SNAP benefits.

PA 9th Congressional District — Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Dallas:

• 17,967 Pennsylvanians will lose Medicaid coverage.

• 8,185 Pennsylvanians will lose SNAP benefits.

Meusr explains his vote

Meuser has said he intends to vote for the bill that passed narrowly in the Senate.

“If Congress doesn’t pass the One Big Beautiful Bill, we’re guaranteeing a $4 trillion tax hike on the American people — raising taxes on 165 million taxpayers and over 33 million small businesses,” Meuser said. “That’s the reality.”

Meuser said the bill addresses the failures of the Biden presidency — unchecked spending, high inflation, stagnant growth, dependence on foreign energy, and a refusal to secure the border.

“We’re now spending $1 trillion a year just to cover interest payments on a $37 trillion national debt,” Meuser said. “That’s unsustainable. And it’s why this bill delivers meaningful savings, including necessary reforms to Medicaid and SNAP.”

Meuser said since 2018, federal Medicaid spending has surged 60% — from $382 billion to $614 billion in 2023.

“Yes, some of that came during COVID — but it was never corrected,” Rep. Meuser said. “A huge share of that growth is driven by illegal immigration, lax eligibility enforcement, and governors like Josh Shapiro who refuse to implement basic integrity measures. In fact, according to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office, our state has one of the highest rates of Medicaid-related criminal activity in the nation.”

Meuser added, “Let’s be clear — no one who is eligible for Medicaid or SNAP will lose coverage — full stop. These reforms simply ensure the programs are sustainable and focused on the people they were meant to serve — seniors, the disabled, and low-income families.”

Meuser questions Shapiro’s numbers

“That’s what makes Gov. Shapiro’s attacks so misleading,” Meuser said. “Non-partisan estimates show the number of people potentially impacted is a fraction of what he suggests.”

Meuser said the only Medicaid beneficiaries who could be impacted fall into just three categories — illegal immigrants; people who are ineligible under the law; and able-bodied adults who refuse to meet a basic 20-hour-per-week work, education, or volunteer requirement — even after a 90-day grace period.

“Shapiro’s statement signals that he’s comfortable with illegal immigrants drawing taxpayer-funded benefits and willing to let Medicaid and SNAP be exploited by those who were never meant to be on the rolls,” Meuser said. “Shapiro and Democrats are fighting to grow government by increasing taxes on working people and small businesses. Republicans are fighting to grow savings, income, and the American economy — while limiting the size and scope of government. If Gov. Shapiro wants to make the case for the status quo, he’s free to do so. But the American people — and the Pennsylvania taxpayers footing the bill — deserve better.”

Bresnahan ‘actively negotiating’

Bresnahan on Wednesday said he is still actively in negotiations with the White House and House Leadership on the legislation.

Also on Wednesday, Politico reported that “GOP Reps. Rob Bresnahan and Ryan Mackenzie of Pennsylvania have raised deep concerns about the Senate’s Medicaid cuts and their own state not being able to access enough relief.”

Rep. Bresnahan did vote “yea” to advance the bill for a House vote.

Right now, on the eve of the fourth of July, the two Congressional office holders will try to justify the cuts in Medicaid by saying we have to getb rid of the fraud. The fraud comes from the providers NOT the people in need.

Our two illustrious Congressmen have fucked over their constituents. Yet some people on the margins still defend Trump and his actions. Let’s hope that they are in the minority and make this un-American, un-patriotic nation of bullies who make the rich, richer and don’t give a rat’s ass about the poor. (Times Leader, LuLac)

BRESNAHAN STATEMENT ON BUDGET RECONCILIATION VOTE

WASHINGTON, DC: Today, U.S. Representative Rob Bresnahan, Jr. (PA-08) released the following statement after the U.S. House passed the budget reconciliation package by a vote of 218-214.

“This bill delivers on the promise I made to the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania by providing the largest working-class tax cuts in American history, eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, and securing the southern border.

“We also protect and strengthen Medicaid by cracking down on the fraud, waste, and abuse that is driving the program toward collapse. This ensures Medicaid is there for seniors, people with disabilities, and vulnerable families, not for those who can work but refuse to do so.

“Most importantly, we worked directly with the White House to ensure all our hospitals in Northeastern Pennsylvania will qualify for the funding they need to stay open and protect critical healthcare access for our communities.”
