DePASQUALE TO HEAD STATE DEMS
Pennsylvania’s former Auditor General is now the chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party .The party tapped Eugene DePasquale as its next chair.
He was a two-term Auditor General and four-term state representative.
“I also want to thank Governor Shapiro and Lieutenant Governor Davis for their support and bringing me into this critical role. I’m honored by the support of my fellow Pennsylvania Democrats — and I’m ready to get to work,” Eugene DePasquale. “It’s clear that as a party, we have a lot of work and opportunity ahead of us – from building up our infrastructure, to ramping up our voter registration, to winning back the trust and the support of so many voters and communities that have been left behind.”
DePasquale succeeds State Senator Sharif Street as chair. The new Chair’s main responsibilities will be countering the GOP lie machine as well as knocking heads among Democrats who think their way is the highway and divide the party.
I got reports about a meeting where one elected official, a virtual rookie said to an established twice elected office holder as well as a party official that “he was not the future of the party”.
Yeah, these Democrats say their united and then shoot their mouths off like that. Good luck Mr. Chairman.
E. JEAN CARROL/TRUMP
APPEAL NEWS
A federal appeals court on Monday upheld an 83 million dollar award against President Donald Trump for defaming magazine writer E. Jean Carroll in 2019.
The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals said the jury award was “reasonable” given the evidence presented at trial.
“We hold that the district court did not err in any of the challenged rulings and that the jury’s duly rendered damages awards were reasonable in light of the extraordinary and egregious facts of this case,” the appeals panel of judges wrote.
The judges also rejected Trump’s effort to assert he had presidential immunity since he made the statements while in office.
BLACK UNEMPLOYMENT
ON THE RISE
August, which is heralded as Black Business Month, should have been a time to celebrate the Black labor force. But last month’s jobs report showed unemployment rates increased for Black workers — and it could point to an economic slump.
The unemployment rate for Black workers reached 7.5% in August — its highest level since October 2021 (7.6%) — and followed consecutive increases in June (6.8%) and July (7.2%). A rise in Black unemployment is often considered the “canary in the coal mine,” foretelling a slowdown for the broader job market.
“The most vulnerable people tend to get laid off first, and unfortunately, that tends to be Black Americans, and that’s something that is very disturbing in and of itself,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at accounting firm KPMG US.
Black Americans make up about 13% of the US workforce. A drop in Black Americans in the workforce can have a crippling effect on Black communities and on the US economy, which some economists say is already in a slowdown.
During the last election campaign, Trump told black voters, “What do you have to lose?” when touting his economic plan. Apparently, it appears to be a lot. (CNN Business, LuLac).
