PHOTO INDEX: THE LATE CONGRESSMAN AND VICE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE JACK KEMP, KEMP ON A TOPPS 1967 FOOTBALL CARD AS A MEMBER OF THE BUFFALO BILLS AND ATTORNEY JENNIFER ROGERS.

JACK KEMP DEAD

Jack Kemp, the ex-quarterback, congressman, one-time vice-presidential nominee and self-described "bleeding-heart conservative," died Saturday. He was 73. Kemp died after a lengthy illness. Kemp's office announced in January that he had been diagnosed with an unspecified type of cancer. Kemp, a former quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, represented western New York for nine terms in Congress, leaving the House for an unsuccessful presidential bid in 1988. Eight years later, after serving a term as President George H.W. Bush's housing secretary, he made it onto the national ticket as Bob Dole's running-mate. With that loss, the Republican bowed out of political office, but not out of politics. In speaking engagements and a syndicated column, he continued to advocate for the tax reform and supply-side policies — the idea that the more taxes are cut the more the economy will grow — that he pioneered.

KING’S COLLEGE ATTACKED

News out of Scranton Saturday revealed that a local Catholic educational institution, King’s College was attacked for its choice of commencement speaker this graduation season. Bishop Joseph Martino, in a public statement chastised King’s College for inviting Senator Robert Casey to speak before the graduating seniors. His excelency said, “I do not believe he has the moral stature to stand before the graduates of a Catholic college to address them about their futures and the challenges they will face when on the most important issue of the day — the sanctity of human life — he cannot muster the courage to oppose the pro-abortion agenda, which is currently being promoted in Washington.” Fine, disinvite Casey and let’s bring the two teenagers from Schuylkill County who just beat the rap for kicking the crap out of a Latino and leaving him for dead.

CORDARO TIME

The Scranton Times Tribune is reporting a federal grand jury seated in Scranton has subpoenaed Lackawanna County for financial documents related to former Commissioner Robert Cordaro, The Times-Tribune has learned. The subpoena from the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania asked the county to provide “copies of all payments issued to Robert Cordaro. This includes both front and back of all check payments.” The subpoena was issued a week before the April 22 conviction of Charles Costanzo for stealing nearly $650,000 while he was administrator of Lackawanna County’s workers’ compensation fund. The 19 counts — including charges of money laundering, conspiracy, wire fraud and tax evasion — carry a potential of 186 years in prison and fines of up to $4.75 million, plus possible restitution to the county.Mr. Carlson said after the trial that “the investigation is ongoing. That’s all we can say.”Mr. Cordaro has not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing. But the rumor mill has been buzzing since Costanzo’s trial and his assertion that Bob Cordaro gave him the contract for the worker’s comp fund after the Commissioner tried to get his friend a job with the original company handling the fund.

DOHERTY ON GOP

Mayor Chris Doherty’s friends are trying to make sure he has friends in all places this primary election day. A group of GOP stalwarts are organizing a write in campaign for the Scranton Mayor. Bob Bolus, a local businessman is running for the nomination on the Republican side but if elected would not be able to serve because of a brush with the law in the 90s. Some heavy hitters are behind this effort, they include former Mayor David Wenzel; Leo Vergnetti, Kevin McDonough, former city Councilman Jerry Donahue, and former county Commissioner Robert Pettinato. If Doherty has a rough go of it in the primary against fellow Dem Gary DeBilio, it will secure him a spot on the November ballot. If this transpire, it will be the opposite of what happened in the 2005 race.

JUDICIAL CANDIDATE BIO

As part of our on going series in covering the Luzerne and Lackawanna County Judicial races, we are going to do brief profiles on those candidates running. In today’s edition, we continue with Attorney Jennifer Rogers. The order was determined by our lottery at the LuLac Forum this past week.

JENNIFER ROGERS

When Jennifer Rogers walked into the LuLac Forum last week, TL reporter Bill O’Boyle pointed the aspiring Judicial candidate out to some people nearby. He said, “That’s Jennifer Rogers”. One person in particular responded, “That certainly is”. Rogers brings a presence to any room she enters and is using that personal magnetism as a way to mount a first time campaign for Judge with limited funds but boundless enthusiasm. Rogers is quick to remind people she has cross filed on both ballots and has been running some pretty effective radio ads. Here is a little bit about Attorney Jennifer Rogers in her own words: As those of you who make Luzerne County your home are painfully aware, our local county judicial system has come under the strictest of scrutiny in recent months due to the unveiling of corrupt practices. As an attorney who practices in Luzerne County, I am saddened. As a citizen of Luzerne County, I am outraged. As a human being, I am moved. I am moved to make a difference. I humbly believe that I possess the character, intellect, integrity, and strength to serve the citizens of Luzerne County as a county judge. I realize that recent events have left the public feeling betrayed, angry and leery of trusting those elected to office. Now more than ever, the public needs to be reassured that the judiciary will protect and recognize the legal rights of each and every Luzerne County citizen. Undoubtedly, those elected to office will have a lot of proving to do. I stand behind my life as I have led it. My closet is empty. I stand beside my family who has raised me to be the woman I have become. My heart is full. I stand before you eager to make a difference in the future of our county in one of its most troubled times. My mind is open. Please spend some time at this site and get to know me. I have practiced as an attorney for almost thirteen years in various environments – a regional law firm, private practice and part-time solicitor for Luzerne County Children & Youth. The courtroom, not the boardroom, has been my primary place of practice. I am comfortable there. I know my way around. Luzerne County was the place of my birth and my family’s roots are deep in this area. While I grew up outside of Baltimore, Maryland, I returned to those roots in 1990 and have lived in West Pittston, Plains, Wilkes-Barre and Harveys Lake to date. I am proud to call Luzerne County my home. I would be honored to be your public servant and a Judge of the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas.

Jack Kemp was a great American before people like Sean Hannity bastardized that phrase. He was authentic, stood for his beliefs and made conservative a viable term. His pre Limbaugh advocacy of conservatism actually brought a meaningful conversation to the political debate. RIP Mr. Kemp.

It is interesting that Chris Doherty is trying to secure the GOP nomination for Mayor of Scranton. Guess he can't afford to leave any stone unturned.
That Jennefer Rogers ad where she's running. Wasn't there a candidate in the 80s who was running around Lake Scranton in his TV ad?

ACTUALLY THAT WAS IN 1976 WHEN NONE OTHER THAN ED MITCHELL, CURRENTLY ONE OF THE TOP POLITICAL CONSULTANTS IN THE WORLD WAS MAKING A BID FOR CONGRESSMAN McDADE'S SEAT. McDADE WAS GOING FOR HIS 8TH TERM AND THE AD, THOUGH EFFECTIVE DID NOT WIN MITCHELL THE RACE. MITCHELL WAS EXTREMELY ACTIVE IN THE '76 RACE FOR PRESIDENT SPEARHEADING THE EFFORTS FOR AN UNKNOWN PEANUT FARMER FROM GEORGIA AND SERVED AS A DELEGATE TO THE CONVENTION IN NEW YORK. THAT UPSTART SOUTHERN GOVERNOR WAS PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER.

The "passing" of Jack Kemp reminds us old timers of the wild days of AFL Football. Didnt always agree with the Quarterback, but he was
ok with me. Rest in Peace.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following comment is on the assault trial in Schuylkill County and its verdict.

I am not a lawyer or a judge but it seems to me Simple Assault results in a black eye or a broken tooth.Beating someone to death regardless of their immigration status and going so far as to kick them in the head when they are already down is MURDER!!! I am outraged and see similiarities to trials held in Mississippi in the 60s!

There are so many candidates running that you would be hard pressed to see any candidate that stands head and shoulders above the rest. Wish us luck.

Hey 5:50PM....head and shoulders above the rest, apparently you haven't laid eyes on the rather towering Ms. Rogers!

I JUST CHECKED MY FACEBOOK PAGE AND I'VE SEEN NOTHING ON THE JUDICIAL RACE OTHER THAN THE PROMOTION OF LAST WEEK'S FORUM. I HAVE NOT YET MADE UP MY MIND BUT HOPE THAT 4 INSTEAD OF TWO WIN. I'D LIKE TO SEE TWO DEMOCRATIC NOMINATIONS AND TWO REPUBLICAN NOMINATIONS.

EDITOR'S NOTE:
THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW COMMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN DIRECTED AT SOME OF THE JUDICIAL CANDIDATES. I HAVE REJECTED THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE SEXIST AND DEMEANING TO SAID CANDIDATES. IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING OF SUBSTANCE TO POST FELLAS PLEASE DO BUT THESE PEOPLE ARE RUNNING FOR JUDGE, NOT FOR A POSITION AT GENTLEMEN'S CLUB 10. AND I SPEAK FOR BOTH GENDERS HERE. IT'S JUST AS BAD TO SAY A MALE JUDICIAL CANDIDATE WOULD MAKE A GREAT BOUNCER JUST AS IT IS TO SAY.....WELL YOU GET MY DRIFT. KEEP IT ABOVE BOARD. AND THANKS FOR READING AND POSTING.

JEEZ, I'M GLAD I'M NOT AN ALCOHOLIC! BILL W. AND DR. BOB S. WOULD HAVE BEEN RUN OUT OF TOWN ON A RAIL IF IT WERE UP TO YOU. TOUGH CROWD OUT THERE IN LULAC LAND TONIGHT!

Okay since David Yonki is becoming the issue here, I looked at his facebook account. It turns out that he is in the tank for a Lackawanna County Judicial candidate, Margaret Bisignani Moyle. At least he is an equal county opportunity tanker. Look, this race is really important and wondering who Dave favors because of his FACEBOOK is crazy. The only sure bet we'd have on who Dave would back, (as if that mattered in the long run, all due respect there Yonk!) is if Geena Davis should up on the stump with any candidate in tow.

COMMENT EDITED......
name one journalist who sells product..... I noticed you took out the many lies that he has told since he has returned to the air locally.. what was dishonest about mentioning a move to the 72nd market when he claims to have been reporting for a world wide news service? didn't like my choice of words... why don't you just close down comments if you are going to hide the truth? i guess exposing the lies of others who claim others lie is wrong!

COMMENT EDITED
A jounalist as a pay endorser is much different than on news anchor doing a guest spot on another t.v. show. Please Mr. Yonki enlighten us, name a paid endorser who is a credible journalist. David Brinkely would not take money from ADM until he was retired..... Perhaps it is time for an investigation of Kevin Lynn and Steve Corbett. Let's check out those who throw stones. Let us see if they are walking the walk. Steve Corbett has told numerous stories of his fabled move back to the area. your habit of editing out negatives about your friends is not worth the effort of further details. You are kind of like Kevin Lynn when he didn't want to ask his friend the judge certain questions and then NOT discuss it on the air.

COMMENT 9:56PM WAS DELETED BY ME BECAUSE I MADE AN ERROR OF CONTEXT. THE SAME COMMENT WAS REPEATED AT 11:49PM WHICH ESSENTIALLY SAID THE SAME THING AS 9:56PM. I DELETED IT BECAUSE I DID NOT WANT TO CAUSE CONFUSION.

Dear Mr. Yonki,

What is with all the editing in regards to the WILK people? Do you work for them? It seems odd that whenever anyone expresses any kind of outrage toward the WILK staff the comments always have the words edited in them. Why would you stifle the free exchange of ideas? I have read your blog since I took a course at one of the local colleges. The instructor insisted we read your column. One of the guests lectures was Steve Corbett. He was actually one of many and was probably the biggest disappointment. He did not stick to the topic or theme of the class and he contradicted many statement he made on the air. Is your editing of comments to protect him? As a student with a strong interest in politics and the history of our country I am curious as to your Nazi tactics in regards to commentary on your site.

I'M NOT SUPPORTING ANY JUDICIAL CANDIDATE IN LACKAWANNA COIUNTY. WENT TO THE DEBATE TONIGHT AND THEY ALL IMPRESSED ME. BEING ON ONE'S FACEBOOK INDICATES NEITHER POLITICAL SUPPORT OR A CRUSH.

DON'T WORK FOR WILK, NEVER HAVE, MOST LIKELY NEVER WILL. I EDIT TO BE FAIR. SOME COMMENTS CROSS THE LINEE. THAT LINE MAY BE IN MY OWN HEAD BUT IT'S MY LINE.

11:30am --- Agree with the ratings being b.s. comment. At least Sue Henry does not claim to be a journalist. And Nancy Kman only shows up for 2 of the 3 hours of her show.
I think everyone except the blog author can agree that once Corbett started being a paid spokesperson he lost his claim to being a journalist.
The truth is that if WILK folded tomorrow they would all be out of work and this are would be none the worse. They are talkers not doers and in the end their lives will have served no genuine purpose except to expose the worst in people, foster fears and hatred in their listeners, or yeah and they also aid in the exchange carbon dioxide for the plants.
