1. IF YOU WERE A DEMOCRAT LIKE DOHERTY OR WAGNER, HOW WOULD YOU POSITION YOURSELF FOR A RUN AS GOVERNOR SUCCEEDING A GOVERNOR LIKE ED RENDELL?
THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS CALL FOR A MULTI YEAR BUDGET. I’D THEN RUN AGAINST THE LEGISLATURE AND LAY THE BLAME FOR THE STALLED BUDGET ON THEM. I WOULD OFFER TO RESTORE THE CUTS MADE TO HUMAN SERVICES AND PROPOSE A PLAN TO REDUCE THE STATE LAWMAKERS PERKS AND SALARIES. THIS WOULD RESONATE WITH VOTERS.
2. ANOTHER LOCAL ON LINE SITE CHARACTERIZED LUZERNE COUNTY COMMISSIONER MARY ANNE PETRILLA AS “TOXIC”. IS SHE?
OUT OF ALL THE DEMOCRATS SHE SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY GROWN UP IN THE HOUSE. HER PROBLEM IS GOING TO BE THAT IN AN ELECTION YEAR, 2011, SHE MIGHT BE RUNNING AFTER LAYING PEOPLE IN THE COURTHOUSE OFF. BUT SHE HAS TO DO THAT IN ORDER TO GET THE COUNTY ON THE RIGHT TRACK. I CAN UNDERSTAND THE SENTIMENT IF NOT THE LANGUAGE. THERE ARE MANY IN THIS REGION WHO REGARD ANY HARD DECISIONS AS TOXIC, AND SHE IS MAKING THE HARD DECISIONS. YOU PAY FOR THAT IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. BUT YOU ALSO CAN GET REWARDED TOO.
3. DO YOU THINK HILLARY CLINTON WOULD HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB THAN MR OBAMA?
YES AND NO. I DON’T THINK SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN AS INSPIRATIONAL AND CHARISMATIC LIKE OBAMA. BUT I THINK SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO WORK BETTER WITH THE GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS IN WASHINGTON MUCH MORE EFFICIENTLY THAN PRESIDENT OBAMA. AS A MATTER OF FACT, PRESIDENT BUSH WAS CONVINCED MRS. CLINTON WOULD SUCCEED HIM. IN AN ARTICLE IN GQ THIS MONTH, BUSH SAID, “YOU THINK I WAS UNQUALIFIED??” TO A FEW STAFFERS, “WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THIS GUY” REFERRING TO OBAMA. I BELIEVE CLINTON WOULD HAVE BEEN SMOOTHER IN HER DEALINGS WITH THE POWERS THAT BE.
4. DO YOU THINK THE LOCAL GOP HAS A CHANCE TO MAKE INROADS IN THIS YEAR’S ELECTIONS?
CERTAINLY. THEY HAVE TO STAY UNITED, NOT BULLET VOTE AND TRY TO WIN OVER INDEPENDENTS AND DISAFFECTED DEMOCRATS. IT CAN BE DONE, IN 1983 FRANK TRINICEWSKI AND JIM PHILLIPS DID IT AND COREY STEVENS DID SO IN 1987 FOR THE DA’S OFFICE. SO YES IT CAN BE DONE.
5. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF BRETT FARVE’S WIN OVER GREEN BAY?
I’M A PACKER FAN AND FELT BRETT’S DIVA ACT WAS WEARING THIN. BUT JEEZ, YOU HAVE TO GIVE HIM HIS DUE. HE IS A REMARKABLE ATHLETE AND IF THE PACK CAN’T GO TO THE SUPERBOWL, LET THE VIKINGS DO IT. AND NO, I HAVE NOT THROWN OUT MY FARVE JERSEY.
6. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE NEW JAY LENO SHOW?
I ALWAYS LIKED HIM AND THINK THE FORMAT IS GOOD BUT NEEDS TO BE TWEAKED A BIT. I THINK HE SHOULD FRONTLOAD THE MOST POPULAR SEGMENTS BUT I CAN UNDERSTAND THE RELUCTANCE TO DO SO SINCE NBC WANTS TO HAVE A STRONG LEAD IN FOR LOCAL NEWS. I HEARD HIM MONDAY IMPLORE “TAPE CSI MIAMI, WATCH IT LATER AND TUNE ME IN”. NOTHING SHY ABOUT THAT.
7. OPRAH OR ELLEN?
NEITHER.
8. WHO DO YOU LIKE IN THE SERIES?
LOVE TO SEE THE YANKEES AND PHILLIES OR AN ALL CALIFORNIA SERIES, ANGELS AND DODGERS.
9. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST THIS POLITICAL SEASON?
IN THE LUZERNE COUNTY JUDICIAL RACE THE VERY LOW KEY EFFORTS OF ALL THE CANDIDATES. AND IN THE 11TH DISTRICT, THE ALMOST FANATIC AND VISCERAL REACTION LACKAWANNA COUNTY COMMISSIONER COREY O’BREN GOT WHEN HE ANNOUNCED FOR A RUN AT CONGRESSMAN KANJORSKI.
10. ANY TV GIGS ON THE HORIZON AND WHEN'S THE NEW BOOK COMING OUT?
I THINK I’M DOING WYLN TV 35 ON ELECTION NIGHT BUT THAT HASN’T BEEN FIRMED UP YET. AS FOR THE BOOK, IT'S FINISHED, READY TO GO EXCEPT THE GRAPHIC DESIGNER IS NOT PROVIDING US A FINISHED PRODUCT YET FOR THE COVER.
11. HOW DO YOU THINK SENATOR SPECTER WILL DO IN HIS RUN IN 2010?
I THINK THE SENATOR WILL DO VERY WELL. I DON’T SEE THE TOOMEY CANDIDACY HAVING ANY LEGS BECAUSE TRADITIONALLY WE’VE ALWAYS VOTED FOR MIDDLE OF THE ROAD CANDIDATES. AND TOOMEY IS NOT ONE OF THOSE.
12. SLEEPER CANDIDATE FOR 2012 GOP PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION?
RICK SANTORUM.
13. WHEN YOU WERE PROMOTING YOUR BOOK “A RADIO STORY” ON ‘KRZ WITH SHADOE STEELE, AT ONE POINT YOU PLAYED A SONG OR HE PLAYED A SONG ASSOCIATED WITH THE BOOK BY A GIRL GROUP FROM 1964. WHO WAS THAT?
WHEN I DID THE ‘KRZ INTERVIEW ON SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE AT THE OLDIES I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THE INTERVIEW WASN’T A DRONE FEST. SO WE USED A FEW SONGS BUT THE ONE I THINK YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT IS “MIXED UP SHOOK UP GIRL” BY PATTY AND THE EMBLEMS. THIS WAS A TOP 20 HIT IN THE YEAR 1964 THAT WE COVER IN OUR FRIDAY EDITION OF LULAC.

Yonk, Do you really think Petrilla is a good county commissioner because she cut a lot of jobs? Don't forget that while she cut jobs in other departments, she had no problems placing people where her friends wanted and needed them. But you really have me interested in your take on the county race. It seems you believe the Republicans can take it all. What's your take on the county election and are there any you feel safe in calling?
the PHILLIES are an exciting team thats for sure and for now they seem to be catching the breaks.
Charlie certainly pulled the right strings last night. Once again Cliff Lee was key along with the usual offensive suspects

Specter will prevail because he is very customer oriented. Toomey has the name recognition but there are too many people hurting in the state to trust the free market philosophy of a guy like toomey to lead us. Toomey is Santorum on prozac.
I think Petrilla will be recognized as s leader who made the tough decisions. My feeling is that voters are finished thinking Luzerne County is la la land where anything goes.
The Governor's race is going to be problematic for anyone considering it on the Democratic side. There is the cycle as you know Yonk but also the fact that the perception is that the Dems want more and more spending. I think your strategy is pretty good to run against the Legislature because they are lower in the polls than the Governor.
Oh my heavens, a Phillies Yankees series would bring all the cashews out.

I THINK THE JUDICIAL RACE IS TOO CLOSE TO CALL AT THIS POINT. THE CONTROLLER'S RACE HAS A WILD CARD IN IT SO YOU CAN'T GO BY THE CONVENTIONAL WISDOM. I FEEL SAFE SAYING CAROLEE MEDICO OLINGINSKI WILL RETURN TO OFFICE AND DOTTIE STANKOVIC WILL BE BACK. OTHER THAN THOSE 2, I DON'T KNOW. BUT THE GOP IS WORKING HARD AND HAS A PLETHORA OF EVENTS DESIGNED TO ENERGIZE THE PARTY. IF NOT THIS YEAR FOR SUCCESS, THEN WHEN IS WHAT I'M THINKING.
I love your idea about running against the legislators. If we could only start a movement to find opposition for every single legislator and let them run on a platform that they will vote to cut the legilatoure in half. We don't have to cut salaries but when the legilators go, so go all the cushy jobs. This could actually be done and people are ready to do it.
As for Petrilla, I'm sorry but I don't see her as any kind of savior. She has cut jobs and some were no doubt overstaffed positions but she did cut deep. At the same time, she is spending money like a drunken sailor when it comes to consultants and what not. Every time they have a friggin problem, they hire a cosultant. WTF? No, I'm done with Petrilla, Urban and Skrep. No more Democrats and no more Republicans. Green Party or Independents, candidates with no pocket full of IOUs to repay to the Rob Mericle's of the county. I can't see big busness buying a member of the Green Party or any Independent. I would love to see somebody try to buy Carl Romanelli. He would hand them their head just for the insult. I'm telling you, Third Party or Independent candidates are the only thing that can straighten things out. This bullshit of Party candidates calling themselves indipendents is a total croc. Just look at them standing at Party functions and waving the Party flag and then they think the voters are so stupid that we buy that independent shit. I sick to death of these assholes.
I noticed that Patti and The Emblems are in the "Northern Soul" category.
Mel Wynn and the Rhythm Aces also show up in "Northern Soul" CDs with "Stop Sign".
Even when covered by ABS, it was referred to as "Northern Soul".
Can the Yonk explain the category characteristics for me. Was Mel from North Ashley? North End? North Scranton?
