HEALTH CARE FORUM

State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, will participate in a health-care forum from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 in Room 132, Educational Conference Center, Luzerne County Community College, 1333 S. Prospect St., Nanticoke.
Pashinski, who is a member of the House Insurance Committee, will join members of the Northeast Health care Reform Task Force to host the forum titled "Health Care: The Right Solutions at the Right Time for the Right Reasons." "We are holding this forum on health-care reform to present research and conclusions that were developed by the Northeast Health-care Reform Task Force over the past three years," Pashinski said. "With debate over the national health-care plan, this is a prime opportunity to present the facts and dispel the misconceptions of health-care reform." The Luzerne County lawmaker organized the Northeastern Pennsylvania Health care Reform Task Force. The panel is comprised of health-care professionals and policy leaders who research health-care technology and how that technology impacts insurance providers and the community. Pashinski said reservations will be accepted for the forum but are not required. Residents are encouraged to call his constituent service office at 825-5934 for details. I will be in New York on that day and regret I will not be there. But Pashinski indicated there will be many of these community events in the future and you can be sure I’ll be attending.

ANGRY TV

You heard of “Mad TV”, all sports TV, well last night’s program “State of Pennsylvania” was all about anger in America and northeastern Pennsylvania. Nancy Kman, Kevin Lynn, Sue Henry and Steve Corbett faced off with a rambunctious TV audience that wanted to prove that indeed they are angry. The anger was not directed at the talk show crew but rather the situations facing our government. I asked what some people regarded as a softball question saying “that life was unfair and we could tolerate that but we have trouble with life being unjust”. The WILK crew then cited the litany of scandals that has dominated the news in 2009. Sue Henry predicted that 2010 would be even more interesting. Duke from Dallas talked about a health care rally he went to with the local teabaggers saying that these grass roots organizations are paid for by right wing interest groups. I sat down next to the local teabagger group who loudly protested that remark and actually made a rebuttal on camera. That got Kevin Lynn in the fray who asked the people in the tea bag group “where were they when President Bush was taking us into a war that cost billions a month?” Steve Corbett fielded a majority of the questions and constantly reiterated his chagrin (mild word there) at the FBI that carved out a plea agreement with Judge Michael Toole that allowed him to stay on the bench for a full two months after he admitted wrong doing. He is not alone in his anger, Mrs. LuLac wants to know if the feds will pay for any court challenges to Toole’s rulings from September 25th through the time he went on vacation. Host Bill Kelly encouraged the discussion prodding some students in attendance from Riverside High School to ask a few questions. The hour flew by as the talk show hosts met their public. Kevin Lynn and Steve Corbett got into a debate over what their role is as talk show hosts, Lynn saying he was part entertainer, opinion maker while Corbett pointed out his column writing on the WILK website and his numerous contacts as a working journalist. Corbett said was good for people to keep on getting involved in the process and Lynn said that even though he disagreed with the philosophy of the tea baggers, he applauded their efforts to get into the streets and effect change that way. Nancy Kman and Sue Henry made the point that corruption and favoritism has to end if this region is to thrive. This was a lively exchange that could’ve gone on for hours. The rebroadcast of the show will be Sunday 1PM on TV 44.

SUNSHINE FADING

An area shopping institution
will be closely very soon. Sunshine Supermarket is in its last days. I went up there on Sunday to buy a few deli items and pick up my last few 6 packs of Tab. The store will be closing soon to make way for an expanded Mohegan Sun casino. I’ve known the folks at Sunshine as a customer and radio rep and always was treated with respect and a great attitude. When a store like Sunshine closes it’s like a death in the community. In my numerous visits the last few weeks I saw a lot of hugs and tears. Relationships have been built in this store and the parting is difficult. I admit it’s tough to ask the employees what they feel since they will be out of work. Frankly for me it’s an awkward situation to talk about. But one part time employee who works elsewhere said, “I’ll miss coming here. It was a place for me to fill a void in my life. I feel bad for the others who had this as their primary income”. As I made my way down an aisle to pick up some Shasta Diet Orange, I saw a young mother on her cell describing the barren shelves and just saying over and over, “This is just so sad”. How very true.

1964

How’s this for historical irony, 45 years ago on Dec. 1st, President Lyndon B. Johnson and his top-ranking advisers meet to discuss plans to bomb North Vietnam (after some debate, they agree on a 2-phase bombing plan). 45 years later President Obama announces an increase in troops for the war in Afghanistan…. Police arrest about 800 students at the
University of California, Berkeley, following their takeover of and massive sit-in at the Sproul Hall administration building. The sit-in most directly protested the U.C. Regents' decision to punish student activists for what many thought had been justified civil disobedience earlier in the conflict……….Governor Scranton visits the campus of Penn State to continue discussions on an expansion program that will put regional 2 year campuses in places throughout the Commonwealth…Locally Pennsylvania Gas and Water gathered home economic teachers from, Luzerne County to present a program “The Pleasures of Chinese Cooking” at the Holiday inn in Wilkes Barre. Guest speaker was Grace Zia Chu. Utility employees Wilma Jones and Frank Petrosky hosted the program…and 45 years ago this week the number 1 song in America and LuLac land was The Beatles and "I Feel Fine".

Sue Henry was obnoxious. She sees no problem ripping our community apart because out of hundreds of thousands of people, there are a few bad apples. Does she think she is doing Luzerne County any good by referring to it as the most corrupt place in the world? At lest she did not refer to the audience as "you people". Kevin looks like he is mad at just the thought of being alive and being forced to communicate with human beings. Steve Corbett is on such an ego trip that I have a hard time believing that he doesn't hang up on more people than he does and Nancy thinks its a big bright beautiful world at WILK. Where the hell is that Greyhound Station?

Corbett a journalist? Please. He is a paid shill for businesses. Journalist to NOT endorse. If they do, the are no longer journalist. If Corbett really believes his is a journalist, then he has very loose journalistic ethics.

Very nice research job on Sunshine.
You asked a very good question last night.
Loved the bible guy but is there room in his world for us Jews?
Think the WILK talkers do a good job.
Love WVIA TV.

SORRY BUT WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? THIS IS MORE THAN A FEW BAD APPLES, THIS IS AN INFECTED ORCHARD.
Kevin looks like he is mad at just the thought of being alive and being forced to communicate with human beings.
KEVIN LOVES LIFE AND DOES NOT SUFFER FOOLS GLADLY. HE'S AN ACQUIRED TASTE.
Steve Corbett is on such an ego trip that I have a hard time believing that he doesn't hang up on more people than he does and Nancy thinks its a big bright beautiful world at WILK.
CORBETT BY HIS VERY NATURE IS A HUMBLE HUMAN BEING. THE GUY REALLY HAD TO WORK HARD TO BREAK INTO THE NEWS BUSINESS BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE AFRAID OF HIS TYPE OF REPORTING. HE HAS PREVAILED. AND NANCY HAS DONE THE BEST JOB IN ASSEMBLING THIS DISSIMILIAR CAST OF CHARACTERS TO BUILD A GREAT RADIO STATION.
Where the hell is that Greyhound Station?
IT'S A MARTZ BUT I'M SURE YOU'LL HAVE TIME TO DO A GOODBYE NOTE TO YOUR FAVORITE RADIO HOSTS. THE TIME AND ENERGY YOU PUT IN THE POST SHOWS HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THEM EVEN IF THEY APPEAR TO BE BAD FOR YOU.

I'LL AGREE WITH YOU WHEN BRIAN WILLIAMS, LEAD ANCHOR OF NBC NIGHTLY NEWS STOPS APPEARING ON 30 ROCK.

Love these shows and think the WILK crew perform a great service. They are like the proverbial dysfunctional-functional family. Best of luck in 2010. It'll be interesting.

All I can say is that given the time, everyone of these bible thumpers who spend hours interpreting the intent of God and condemning others usually have a terrible history of their own or they will fall like a rock at the first opportunity. I have little use for people who spend their efforts condemning and preaching. What they need is a job or at the very least, spend a little time with their own families. The particular bible thumper you refer to preaches about political hacks but he is a retired county worker. Talk about hypocrisy! Jews don't get a break because they don't use God to get rich. Bible thumpers are for the most part, asking for money or filling their personal need for public recognition. Being a Christian, it is hard to admit that the Jewish religious don't use God as their way to fame and fortune. Christians could learn from the religious and humble Jews.

In the extreme, I dont think Ed Murrow or Walter Cronkite would have done endorsements. It does still bother me when Corbett, who is making a case for media respect as a journalist, does an endorsement or an ad. I applaud his efforts as the only Radio Guy approaching his role as a reporter journalist and I truly believe he is a pro, but I cringe when I hear
the ads. Meanwhile the man is a
dedicated watchdog in a local sea of corruption.

You are correct 7:54pm but he is a paid dedicated watchdog. I wonder how much he would do if not paid. He is what he detests the most, a capitalist. He profits from the fear and hatred he cultivates. He proclaims, "I am a journalist" but prostitutes his name to the highest bidder.
He is an entertainer, much in line with Bozo the clown and Bart Simpson. You get more insightful, political stimulation watching South Park and John Stewart then with Corbett. And the folks at Comedy Central understand that they are first and foremost entertainers NOT journalist.
Kevin Lynn hit the nail on the head on WVIA. The only part timer on the panel got it right. They do not influence anything. They are there to make us laugh!

Not sure if you got Steve Corbett's show on Friday but he was trying to find fault with Cosgrove being nominated. WTF is with this guy? Honestly, is he only concerned with negativity? Is there anyone that represents honesty and integrity better than Joe Cosgrove? Do we really need anything at this time more than that?
Steve Corbett and his ilk at WILK are disgraceful and despicable "human beings." They feed of the hatred and fear of the uneducated and unfortunate. They are as much a problem to this area as the corrupt elected officials. Your defense of them is the past really puts you in a negative light. Why you edit or worse do not print criticism of this bunch is beyond me.
I was referred to this blog because of a college class I taught. The instructor spoke of you in glowing terms and convinced us that our voices matter. Through blogs such as yours we could initiate dialogue and institute a change. I recently commented concerning WILK on another of your posts, and of course it was not published. I think his admiration is misplaced.

OKAY, SO YOUR DEFINITION OF A DESPICABLE HUMAN BEING ARE PEOPLE WHO TELL THE TRUTH AND TELL IT LIKE IT IS? DESPICABLE IS WHEN YOU HAVE TRUSTED OFFICERS OF THE COURT SETTING UP THEIR OWN LITTLE KINGDOMS AT THE EXPENSE OF THE PEOPLE HERE IN THIS AREA SCRAPING BY. DESPICABLE IS WHEN YOU HAVE A FEW FAMILIES FEEDING AT THE TROUGH AND NOT BEING SATISFIED WITH THEIR GOOD FORTUNE. DESPICABLE IS CASH FOR KIDS. DESPICABLE IS KEEPING PEOPLE IN THIS AREA UNEDUCATED AND UNFORTUNATE BY CONSTANTLY OFFERING LOW PAYING JOBS. DESPICABLE IS HAVING THE VERY INSTITUTION YOU GO TO SCHOOL AT FILLED WITH CRONIES AND RELATIVES (NOT ALL BUT A LOT OF THEM) OF THE ELITE AND POWWERFUL. THAT'S DESPICABLE. IF YOU THINK THEY (WILK) ARE AS MUCH A PROBLEMS AS THE CROOKS, THEN GOD SPEED MY FRIEND. AND AS FAR AS ME BEING IN A NEGATIVE LIGHT FOR DEFENDING WILK, I'LL TAKE THAT CHARGE GLADLY.

i took the same class and i too was refferred here my our instructer. while i don't view you in a negative light, i do think your heavy handed censorship kind of goes against what you stand for. i agree with all you said, and I agree with anon, I see WILK talk show hosts perhapaps not descipicalbe, but dishonest, why? because they exploit the situations for personal gain, hidden in the shroud of public service. the only honest one is kevin lynn, whom i like and was our instructor's least favorite. but he accepts the coruption, defends his friends who are involved and admits he has no role other then to entertain. ya gotta love a guy who is not a hypocrite and knows his role.
is he really only a part timer? wow
