This week another Judge went down in the corruption scandal in Luzerne County. I had the opportunity to talk to a former law enforcement professional about the scandal.
Q: How long were you on the job?
A: Thirty one years.
Q: Did you know dirty cops and lawyers?
A: Let’s just say I knew guys who cut corners but it never came to something illegal.
Q: What did you think of the news this week?
A: Dumb. In the old days when you got a political plum you shut your mouth, kept your head down and gave no one an excuse to badmouth you. And you never lorded your good fortune over people. That’s how you kept the job. The old time bosses would slap you down if you got out of line.
Q: Does greed play a part in it?
A: Yeah and as I said, stupidity. See people think when they are brought up in a political family, they are special. They’re not. Their very existence hinges on the fact that their mothers or fathers won an election.
Q: But don’t people earn their own stripes? I mean Pat Toole Senior didn’t get Michael Toole through law school.
A: True. But somewhere along the line people make turns in life that they can’t reverse. They get caught up.
Q: Will this thing ever get resolved?
A: It is so pervasive I see this purging going on for the next twenty years.
Q: Do the people charged deserve everything they get thrown at them?
A: Yes and more.
Q: Why?
A: Because they did wrong but if I were a judge I’d add on another ten years to everybody’s sentence.
Q: How come?
A: 5 for being so greedy and 5 for being so ****ing stupid.

This is a tragedy for them and their families...a stunning fall from grace. Can you imagine the discussion between Judge Pat Toole and his son? Unless of course, this is a way of business that dates back decades, which it may indeed be.
Here's one of the most maddening things to me; Uncle Sam knows about every penny I make, and he does his damndest to get as much of it as he can. How many tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands did these guys take down, exchange....share etc....that Uncle Sam never saw? These were people who were already in the top 3% of wage earners, and this money allowed them to live an even greater life..and cheated everyone else of us in the process. That is what is so egregious to me, and that is why they need to do time....
